    Episode 173.5 - Minisode 173.5

Somewhere I read a statistic that, no matter where you are in the world, you're never more than 3 feet from coleslaw with raisins. Did you know that you that the average person eats over a dozen raisins in their sleep over the course of their life?

Episode 14 - Escape From New York

Prior to my first viewing of EfNY just recently, my only Adrienne Barbeau reference was from Sealab 2021, which had a running joke about Capt. Murphy wanting to put his brain into a robot Adrienne Barbeau: Behold the Barbeaubot, with chainsaw hands and D-cups full of justice!

I kinda get cracked up by Shaun the Sheep. My niece loved it. My daughter couldn't give a shit.

So of course I just spent a good 15 minutes reading his wiki page. He's almost killed people/trains?! Who knew Thomas got so dark?

There's so much to unpack here, but I'd like to start by asking, what the hell kind of train has a jaws-style frontloader, and why is it chasing Thomas? Also, it's Thomas' first movie, and on the poster, they have him fleeing for his life? I think this is proof that even the people who made the show hated "Thomas the Tank Engine."

I agree. This mother duck's sadness is totally self-inflicted. Speaking as a parent, maybe do something to look out for your ducklings besides going "quack quack quack." GET IT TOGETHER, MOTHERDUCKERS!

Yes, syncing was a huge part of the game, but aside from secondary mission objectives, syncing was just your health meter. Neither of those translates well to movies. They ended up making it all Matrix "the body cannot live without the mind." They could've just said, "Hey, we've got this Animus, let's plug you in and find that Apple of Eden." Plus they had the whole secondary thing with Jeremy Irons and Marion Cotillard ... doing to much. But it was cool to look at. And they wouldn't have had to go completely FPS with the parkour, but damn, how cool would legit Ninja Warrior free-running have looked across those movie sets?

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

I thought it was a cool story (bro), and it looked great, but I couldn't take the Animus scenes. I don't even know why they had to do so much with the future/past storylines and shoehorn in all the talk about "syncing" and crap ... just keep it with Aguilar. Also, why CGI the parkour stuff? YouTube is completely lousy with parkour videos ... find a location, build a set, and give these guys a fucking GoPro!
  11. I've only ever heard of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers... I don't think I've ever seen one of their flicks. So, far out!

I guess that's kinda my point ... you'd get to the average way before you'd need 666 profiles. SID's personality would be determined after a hundred or so.

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

What's funny about this is that such killer personality profiles would have a great deal of overlap since most profiling rubrics have a finite number of questions, answers, etc. Once SID had received the first 100 profiles, all the boxes would have been checked over and over again. The only difference would be things that are unique to the individual's crimes or lives, and it's clear that SID doesn't really express anything that nuanced. For example, SID never paints like Hitler or Gacy, he doesn't have a penchant for axes like Lizzy Borden or bombs like Grimes, he doesn't go after high profile politicians like Sirhan or Fromme ... he's just a random nutter. If they're going to bother making him a composite of history's greatest nutters, then some small and identifying aspects on these people's personalities should come through randomly, and this just doesn't happen (save for Grimes). It's almost as if the logic of Timecop Virtuosity is flawed.

Speaking of this, has anyone seen the Assassin's Creed movie? The Animus in the movie functions in a similar way to VR machine in Virtuosity, in that they are physically acting out what takes place in VR. It's completely stupid in both instances ... why can't they just be immobile a la The Matrix?

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

I took a look back through the boards at all the times someone pointed out that a character knows something they have no way of knowing. And throughout the episode, the gang also points out a few other times, as well. It seems as though every major character, at some point, demonstrates psychic abilities. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the film is set in a future where, in addition to future tech cybernetics, robotics, genetic engineering, and 3D printing, everyone of import is omniscient. This would mean that the training programs may, in fact, be correctly attuned to the search and apprehension of superhumans, as is apparently a problem in this movie's reality.

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

Here's a question: How does SID know that he can regenerate? Lindenmeyer doesn't seem to learn about android cocoon birth until Reilly cuts the snake in half, and he then immediately hands over SID's chip for processing. SID could not have known that there was an Android Cocoon Birth division just up the hall from the Omnipotent Serial Killer Takedown Training lab, and so that couldn't have been part of his plan. Lindenmeyer was clearly shocked by what he was seeing and wouldn't have been able to tell him before scurrying away. So how did SID know he could just regenerate himself with glass?

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

I'm having a hard time thinking that there have been fewer that 666 psycho killers and dictators in all of recorded history. I'm sure it's true but ... seems light, I guess. I mean, there have been billions of people throughout recorded history, so those would be pretty good numbers ... I don't want to be skeptical about it.

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

I figured Jason or somebody else would've pointed out how the programmers say that Sheila 3.2 has the ability to detect "any degree of detectable tumescence" in the people watching. First, that's the movie's best line. Second, how, exactly, does she detect this? Can the programs actually see into the room that the monitors are in, or are there some kind of scanners placed throughout the room that is designed to detect half-mast boners? Third, and most importantly, why, when Sheila realizes that Sid's programmer is uninterested in engaging her, does she say, "why don't you just kill me then?" Is this a fantasy -- the woman who would rather die than not inspire boners?
  22. The_Triple_Lindy

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

At one point Jason asks if the crystals inside the programs' cartridges was their souls. It reminded me of my favorite Pulp Fiction theory -- that "what's in the briefcase" is Marcellus Wallace's soul, and part of the evidence is that Wallace is wearing a bandaid on the back of his head, roughly where his pineal gland is. To wit: The pineal gland was believed by Descartes and others to be where the soul resided in the brain. And when Barker removes Sid's crystal at the end of the movie, he pulls it from the back of his head in roughly the same spot. So yeah. Souls. This movie is levels-upon-levels.

    Episode 173 - Virtuosity: LIVE!

A couple of you read my mind about some stuff, but just to add to it: It didn't even occur to them to send regular cops until the very end, when they were so in the way that they had to pull back! Maybe they know how incompetent their police force is, because they went straight for the bionic killer cop. It literally cuts from video of Sid killing Horny Programmer Guy to "here's a full pardon." Ridiculous. But then, part of the deal is that they will track him for the rest of his life? That's hardly a full pardon. One might argue that a life lived under constant surveillance is quite exactly like prison. YES! Why would they bother?! Maybe just because they knew that they'd be pitting him against white supremacists every once and a while and just wanted to make it fair? Meanwhile, if you know that you have a bionic left arm, why would you ever throw a right-handed punch? Only thing I can figure is, this movie is part of a world that uses inmates as test subjects in exchange for reduced sentences, so maybe this was an experimental surgery he volunteered for, because he's also the only one in the entire movie with a bionic anything.

    Episode 172.5 - Minisode 172.5

If you were just looking for a movie to kill an evening, there are thousands of better choices, but this really is the kind of movie that makes for golden HDTGM episodes and board threads. It's a mainstream, multimillion dollar flick that features a few big names and several "that guys" and "whats-her-names" that is completely insane and stupid. It's set in the future yet is a total 90s case study, from the fashion to the music to the CGI. But somehow, it also touches upon themes and commentary that are still relevant ... not in any meaningful way, just to forward the nonsense plot. This is Denzel's Timecop moment. Edited to add: Having just rewatched it, I'll say -- watch the first hour or so. The end is rather infuriating. You'll still have time for chainsaws.
