Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

I think the more pertinent question is: What part of that guy's body goes flying off to the left when he gets hit? -

I know I'm coming in late here, but I've never seen this before tonight, I just finished watching, and ... a few thoughts: 1. TWO AND A HALF HOURS 2. One of the things I love about watching old movies I've never seen is figuring out how many things I have seen reference this movie. It's the same as when I would watch Bugs Bunny, with background music that riffed off of old classical music, and then years later would being listening to NPR in the afternoon and some Wagner piece would come on and I'd go, "Oh! Elmer and Bugs were Siegfried and Brunhilda!" 3. It's funny how lots of people today over-romanticize the 1950s as a period of unassailable family values and such, while in the 50s they were waxing nostalgic for dice games, pick pockets, and betting on the horse races. Although, the 50s version of the Big City crime-ridden cesspool is pretty cute. They're shooting craps in the sewers and hustling in the street, yet there is not a bit of smog or soot to be seen and everyone is dressed sharp as a tack. -

It took me a while to find time to hunt this shot down, but ... ... can we talk about Dragon Sound's next-level school spirit and these totally bonkers UCF shirts? And can we all agree that two of these are made with duct tape? -

Never seen Guys and Dolls ... most of my knowledge comes from that one Simpson's episode featuring "Luke Be a Jedi Tonight." But forgive me, I'm confused ... did I miss the discussion of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? I thought that was next ... -

First, totally down to Fast Furiously. Second, Python had several characters named "Sin-jin," such as Oliver St John Mollusk, who ran himself over during the Upper Class Twit of the Year: What a great Twit! -

Oh yeah ... remember Pleasure Island, the old night club for adults that they had somewhere outside of Epcot, back in the day? Also, all the Dwarf actors are naked under their costumes, but that's less about sexiness and more about avoiding heat stroke. But still ... sexy. -

Ha! I saw this but didn't register what the sign was saying. But wait ... he's advertising a nudist church while wearing more clothes than anyone should at the beach. [sigh] ...just another holyman not practicing what he preaches. -

I think Polly is right. Katt Williams talks about how he has silk pillow cases for the women with perms who he ... um, has over for hugs and kisses: So, it has to be true, you see ... EDIT: I don't know why I'm trying to be modest in a forum about a whorehouse. -

Which raises the question: How did Beard Guy #2 coordinate not one, but two ambushes of Dragon Sound without walkie-talkies or cellphones? The first time, BG#2 just waits for the band to finish the gig and then follows them, but a few blocks later, the rest of BG#2's crew blocks off the road and pins them in ... HOW? Unless they knew where the band was heading, there was no way the crew could predict where they'd be in order to be waiting. The second time, it seems that they just see the band driving by, so I'll chalk that one up to dumb luck, I guess -

I raced here to post as the episode was winding down because I thought they were going to just not talk about Uncle Song. I know they did briefly at the very end, but I don't think they did him justice. This scene ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwL3-dMea7k ... is one of the most outstanding pieces of shitty filmmaking I've ever seen. Uncle Song is kicking ass on the dine-and-dashers out in the parking lot. CUT TO: Dragon Sound pulling up in their convertible, seeing that Uncle Song is fighting, and leaping out of the car to help. CUT TO: Uncle Song nonchalantly walking back into the restaurant, having finished off his opponents off-screen, and then a full 8 seconds later, Mark, etc, come sprinting through the door, remarking about how awesome he was to have taken care of all of those guys on his own. One - how far away did they park the car that they could see him fighting yet didn't actually reach him until after he had already come down from the action? Two - when Uncle Song explains that "Taekwando isn't just kicking and punching ... Taekwando is right here [the heart] and right here [the head]" ... yeah, but you beat all those guys with your kicking and punching, though, right? Three - I LOVE LOVE LOVE how, as they are running up, you hear about three seconds of footsteps off-screen. This is some Monty Python-level filmmaking, and I lost my mind when I saw it. -

This kinda rings a bell. Watching the movie made me remember how my grandmother used to always buy the National Inquirer, and Dolly Parton was always in there. It was usually about her plastic surgery, but they might've mentioned that. But there are not many successful, famous, badass women who haven't had the "she's probably a lesbian" thing thrown at them. Plus, the idea of a guy from the mountains not wanting anything to do with fame and Hollywood isn't beyond my comprehension. -

Two possibilities: 1) With their late-night work schedules and early morning chicken-related chores, maybe she didn't have the time or energy to lose weight before, or 2) Dolly was trying to prevent the girls from becoming too body conscious and getting caught up in beauty culture -- she wanted real women who focus their attention on hot, steamy, tattoo-less, vanilla sex. -

I don't know why this sprung to mind, but whenever the Time/Life "Best of Johnny Carson" infomercial comes on, I always watch until I see this moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw2W8ZC7pkM Goddamn, you gotta love Dolly. Legend, ally, sweetie. Anyone here ever been to Dollywood? -

This was the most troubling part of the movie for me! All these women losing their jobs, losing their homes, having to leave town and go ... where, exactly? And how are they going to explain the giant gap in their employment histories on their job applications? -

Just to blast through a few responses ... I basically agree, but the way we have sex determines whether we go to heaven, so ... baby Jesus cares, you sinners. My granddad worked for a local TV news station, and when he died, a couple of the local anchors came to the funeral. And several of our family friends totally and inappropriately freaked the fuck out over being in the same room as these local half-celebs. But I'll tell you ... these local half-celebs sure sometimes talk and act like the A-listers they think they are. Here is a photo of a gigger using a gigger to gig a frog: Hope that helps clear things up -
