Episode 188 - Body Rock: LIVE!

So Chilly cons his way into Terrence Mitchell's office to see if he would represent him and his crew as graffiti artists. The conversation that Mitchell has on the phone after he blows off Chilly is hilarious: "Donald!... How are you? Yeah… well we moved in the sound system but they broke a speaker. So we had to replace that. These things always happen when you’re opening a night club. What do you mean! I still have to go from club to club and look at some DJs and figure out which ones are the best and offer them … you know…good money! Yes, we have to get together and we have to discuss what we’re going to do. I mean we either have a houseband or some dancers or… you gotta spice things up, that’s right. Ok… alright… talk to you later, bye. " I guess I don't really have a comment, this is just such an 80s guy conversation. Also. I cannot get over how legitimately cool this sequence is:

Episode 188 - Body Rock: LIVE!

I don’t think they mentioned this (maybe I missed it) but one of my favorite things about Body Rock was that the songs had extremely literal lyrics that matched the subtext to every scene. Just amazing when you notice and it’s almost every song.

Musical Mondays Week 38 The Singing Detective

So... I watched it.... My favorite part was the sex scenes. They were disturbing, sad, unsexy and - best of all - way too long. Yeah... I wondered about this too. If this were made now it seems like they would actually be singing, right? I guess it stylistically is more of a break from reality. It was odd though... like an episode of Saved by the bell. I guess it was probably cheaper to do it that way? RDJ et al could have just rehearsed that lipsync for a few hours before they shot the scene, whereas if they actually sang there would have been rehearsal, recording, mixing, editing etc...
  4. I’ll be there!

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

I sort of understood it that seeing the sign shocked him back into reality (you know, the reality where most people were probably saying "whatever happened to you and Lena?") BUT I like the idea that the spell had a parameter around the town and by crossing the threshold he instantly remembered. It's as logical as anything else in this movie.

  7. There are a shit-ton of famous people in this, which of course does not bode well. I'm excited to check it out!

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

Yes! Wouldn't people ask him about this constantly? Or since Amma is magic too - maybe she's like Fry and the brains and she's the only one who remembers? Jeez... 2 Futurama references in mere minutes.

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

Guys... It took me 3 go'rounds to watch this movie and the final one took. I actually really liked it. Sure, it's Twilihungerpotter, but I thought it was kind of sweet. I love that she erased his memory and I love that it came back to him right at the very end. It has some legendary actors and it had a lot of potential that paid off sometimes and not other times. I think some of the reactions of characters to things that were happening were not naturally acted, but If I had watched this as a teen I would have probably loved it. Forgive me if what I'm about to talk about was in the podcast - I have listened to it, but that was a few viewings of this movie ago: What I really want to understand is the curse. What is it exactly and how does it work? The curse is the infliction of good or bad witchy-ness upon a female caster? ALL female casters have to deal with this, or just Lena and her maternal family? Was the woman who's man died in the Civil War the first Caster? As I understood Lena's explanation to Y. Han, all female casters may or may not have the dark inflicted upon them on their 16 birthday, while the male caster's can choose which side to live on. So if that is correct every female caster has to have someone they love die?? It seemed like their "true love" had to die in order not to become dark, but they changed the rules at the end when Macon dies instead. This whole operation is tenuous and seemingly a moving target. I ask this question to myself a lot when it comes to movies and religion trying to warn people away from the dark life. Chanting, dancing, spells, cooking, baking, singing, cats, you get to work outside, I imagine you have flexible hours... and of course sexy AF outfits... The fact that this doesn't have as much lure for people in narratives boggles the mind.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

It made it super Hawaiian-ey and shit. --- I just wanted to put it out there that another good companion piece to this... or maybe if you've watched a slew of Elvis movies...is to watch Honeymoon in Vegas starring our patron saint of HDTGM - Nic Cage. It's is one of my absolute favorites and Elvis is a big part of it since the soundtrack is all his songs or covers. There's even a baby Elvis impersonator - Bruno Mars! Anyways... since the movie goes from Las Vegas to Hawaii and back, Elvis is sort of looming large over the whole thing.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

Man... watching Elvis age is a stone cold bummer. I'm not sure I can do Clambake - maybe if I get in a "watching Elvis' entire catalogue" mood, but I will totally do King Creole if it pops up in my streaming.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

A story I like to tell myself - Floyd accidentally got on a bus to Raleigh, somehow got shuffled on to a plane to Honolulu, and must have walked into the tourist guide office so he could go see Diamondhead or something and got mistaken for the boss there. He seems equally as confused as he ever did in Mayberry.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

I think you are onto something there. He's in love with Maile, but he openly admits to playing around and random teenage girls can get close enough into his orbit to have intimate moments with him... which is another place they can project themselves into this movie. Then at the end he marries Maile in a lavish Hawaiian wedding... another (stereotypical) female fantasy. Did anyone notice that he's wearing white? I wonder if that is a Hawaiian tradition or if he's wearing white because it is totally about him and not her.

In the 60s it would have been called a playsuit (which I assume you can swim in too) and often had a matching skirt. It is a very interesting relic from the period. The construction of both is fairly straight forward, not that making a one piece jumpsuit is ever easy, but the skirt would be simple. Lots of patterns are still out there if you need some summer glamour!

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

I mean... is there a bad time? He is kind of treated like Zack Morris. Just a lovable scamp who can do no wrong and all the women want. I knew the last song - Hawaiian wedding song before this... but mostly because of this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVbYWtK3WNU (Which is actually one of the funniest moments of GG IMO) Fun fact - there is an INCREDIBLY FAMOUS person impersonating Elvis in this scene.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

Yes me! He was holding him by the arms! I guess that dog ain't never caught a rabbit... I find it interesting that there was no real differentiating between the fashion of the "youth" and the fashion of the adults in this film. You would think that a costume designer would want to make a divide since that's one of the ONLY things this movie is actually about. We see Elvis in white pants/shorts and a Hawaiian shirt... and so do we see every other man in the film. The young girls were wearing shirt waist dresses or skirts and blouses... just like all the adult women. It's hard to see the one girl as 17 since they all look 40 to me. That's the sad truth about fashion though... older styles make us think of older people. If you didn't know - it might be very hard to pick out which is the "adult" in this lineup.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

Thanks for that info - I was actually wondering which movie is his most "legit" last night... similar to Marilyn Monroe who made a ton of movies, but only like 3 or so that are good movies.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

Sooo... 2 things: 1. I am obsessed with this thing I read a few years ago that Natalie Wood, who dated Elvis, claimed he was really terrible in bed. I think about this a lot. 2. What the F is the plot of this movie?

She didn't even seem to care. What a quaint time... where men can cheat and women are like "oh well... whaddayagannado?"

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

To start- He greets his girlfriend by making out with a flight attendant - in the hopes of making her (who he hasn’t seen in edit: 2 years) jealous. WTF? He’s such a Chad.
  21. Just finished watching.
  22. Your photos are great Cinco!
  23. I'm not like an "Uncle Jesse" levels or anything but I do have an Elvis thing. I love the Beatles too though. I'm super complicated.
  24. I realize I don't think I've ever seen an Elvis movie start to finish so I am pretty excited to see Blue Hawaii. From what I hear he's an atrocious actor and at the same time quite compelling to watch. I looked through my pics this morning from my trip to Graceland in 2007. It was hot as hell, but we had a good time. My photos from that trip are 90% garbage, but I thought I would share this one. Gallery O' Jumpsuits. Anyone else visited Graceland?
