    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

Here's a pic of Bess' first husband (Matthew's father.) and here's her current husband (after Chester passed)

She gets yellow carded at one point. Coach Annie is a ridiculous person.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

I played soccer at about the age of these girls... I was not good. June mentioned that she was a forward which means she was indeed probably pretty good. At this age if you actually have some soccer ability they probably put you at forward or goalie (Which, as TL pointed out, is crazy that they made Chu the goalie seeing as how inexperienced she was.) The midfield and defensive positions are filled with well-intentioned but less skilled players (like me!) At this age defensive play is not as stressed and everything is mostly focused on trying to score, so yes these youth leagues probably do score more but 9-7 does seem excessive. I guess those scores are just more exciting than showing 1-0. (Although a 1-0 victory is sort of a funny in joke.)

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

My biggest bone to pick with this movie is the "underdog" storyline. The lady bugs are the champions of the Rocky Mountain soccer league five years running. They have huge signs on their practice field saying so. Yes, they lost most of their old team, but to other teams their legacy alone would make people expect big things from them - the opposite of an underdog. I would assume in this recreational league that most of the other teams wouldn't even be that aware of the turnover and would be trembling in their cleats when they played the bugs. As reigning champs they would be the team to beat. Besides this, they are NOT the bad news bears or the mighty ducks because of another big difference: CORPORATE MONEY. Uniforms, practice uniforms, balls, flags, signs, bags, coolers, a varied coach and ass't coach uniform... their own practice field. This team has it. They are sponsored by a huge corporate conglomerate which is hemorrhaging money in signage alone. During the "Great Balls of Fire" montage we see that the Mullen office has commissioned large one-off scoreboards for each game, each more elaborate than the last... All to celebrate their inevitable victory. In almost any other context these would be the bad guys.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

You know, I've been thinking a lot about Back to School because of Ladybugs. Back to School I'm sure has a few jokes that didn't age well, but I love that movie... it's one of my favs. He's genuinely funny, he's full of energy and -for the most part- his love interest is age appropriate so there's much less of a creepy old man factor. I can and will love RD in that movie, his role in Ladybugs not withstanding. I think a lot of comedians have one movie (maybe more if they're lucky) that should be bronzed and put on the mantle and most others that should be stacked away in the closet. The best example off the top of my head is Coming To America which is close to a perfect comedy IMO, but practically every other movie Eddie Murphy has made (where he's the star in the medium priced star vehicle) is not great. Rodney's is Back to School. Except RD comedy is based off of self deprecation which I can always appreciate. I have loved his standup in the past, but we are living in a post "me too" world and there is plenty I'm sure that might feel ickier now.

Right! I forgot about that sequence because WTF!! The juxtaposing scenes of Chester at the bar and Matthew at the soda fountain is so bizarre. It’s another example of children acting in an inappropriately adult themed manner.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

Here's another easy to write one. Please correct me if I'm wrong - but I think this is right: Every scene in this movie is during the day - not one night scene. Is this because of the underage actors? Rodney's bedtime? Either way, it's a little peculiar if you start thinking about it. It is probably the nicest thing I can say about it... it's a very bright and sunny movie.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

I had the same thought, especially when they have the unnamed girl standing right there. Giving Pester another chance is ridiculous in the context of what Chester is trying to do. Plus... you take people in and out of soccer games all the time because they are running and need to occasionally rest.

    Episode 183 - Ladybugs: LIVE!

I have a few things to say about this movie, but I'm at work so I'll talk about the thing that's easiest to quantify right now. The entire sequence at the mall is completely arbitrary and does not need to exist (besides its potential for genitalia based comedy.) There really is no reason for "Martha" to ever dress like a girl outside of the ladybug's practice and games and neither of those situations calls for that fucking Laura Ashley nightmare that they try on at the dress shop (which he does NOT wear when we finally do see him as "plainclothes Martha".) The shop lady greeted Chester and Matthew and their story is they want to try on the dress so that they can buy it for Matthew's twin sister. The lady certainly finds it to be strange, but she buys their story and sets them up in the dressing room. First off: Chester and Matthew bring along with them Martha's wig, socks, and shoes... why? Wouldn't it be WAY easier to just buy a few dresses based on his shape, take them home, and return anything that doesn't fit. Secondly: The lady sees him come in as Matthew and for some ridiculous reason he leaves as Martha. Mind you they make it seem like he runs out the door embarrassed by the woman who thinks they're having sex in the dressing room- but they would have had to pay for that dress. They would have at least had to scan the tag on the dress he was wearing. What's funny to me is that might have actually been a funnier interaction than most of the crap that happened in the rest of the sequence. Lastly: There was no reason for Matthew to be walking around as Martha that day at all - that is so risky and could only potentially raise more questions about who she is and why is she always hanging with Chester.

Musical Mondays Week 32 Hustle & Flow

Flow is rapping, rhyming, making poetry, talking but with style, and I guess you probably aren't flowing if you suck at it. It's the equivalent of "Rocking"or "Rawking" if you will.

Yeayuh! I mean - being a vending machine supplier is kind of like pimping...You make your own hours, a lot of the work includes driving around, it's a complete supply and demand operation... except instead of sexy ladies it's sexy snacks and soda.

Man, owning a few vending machines would be a sweet gig, because - yes - vending machines can be restocked at almost any time. It's a classic turn key operation that doesn't require much from the supplier, except for a restock every few weeks. The point is: it's totally my dream job.

    Episode 182.5 - Minisode 182.5

Before we get into this movie later this week, I want to preface it with RIP Jonathan Brandis (1977-2003). I had a hardcore crush on him when I was a young teen and was a devoted SeaQuest DSV viewer because of it. He has kind of a sad story. Anyways - I hope everyone enjoys this shitty movie.

Musical Mondays Week 32 Hustle & Flow

Let me clarify. He's not exactly an eloquent speaker - that is definitely true - but I think his opening monologue shows that he does have some pretty existential thoughts for a man in his situation. He actually has a few moments where he expounds upon life and death... and I think that's why we as the viewer are supposed to like him. He's definitely a terrible person in many ways and his deep thoughts do not forgive any of his actions, but I think we are supposed to be drawn to the fact that he has a philosophical side. I adore her in this movie. She gives such a genuine performance. That outfit is fire. F*cking hilarious.
