Request: Cover the Sight & Sound 50 Next?

Hmm, are there any well-recognized lists that aren’t limited to being from one country? Or is the BFI list not done in the AFI’s “Any movie even arguably from our country” standard?

Sex and the City 2 (2010)

(Spoiler for a terrible movie) Someone, I wanna say The Editing Room, said that the ending to this movie was basically “Wow, American and Middle Eastern women aren’t so different after all! They’re both shallow and materialistic!”

    Waterworld (1995)

Apparently there’s going to be a new DVD version of it coming out that’s a full 40 minutes longer: https://www.slashfilm.com/waterworld-blu-ray/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark

    Waterworld (1995)

I just want to say that several Universal Studios theme parks still do a live “Waterworld set” show, and apparently it’s quite good. Thing is, as i’ve said elsewhere on this forum, the in-park ads for it on the loudspeakers advertise it as being from “the hit movie” as if everyone didn’t know it wasn’t a notorious flop. Guess they’re in deep denial or something.

    Big Ass Spider (2013)

Was messing around with Siri and got her to search for “Ass, the movie,” half thinking of Idiocracy. This ine came up in the results and I had to check and make sure that it had been suggested, entirely because of the title.

    The Peanut Butter Solution (1985)

Doing this 80s movie would also help to counterbalance all the brand-new stuff they’ve done lately. An average year has maybe one movie made that year in it, and the past six months had about six of them.

    Episode 206.5 - Minisode 206.5

I’m sort of disappointed that Corrections & Omissions didn’t mention the first thing that the forums said about the episode: that the “Moron sandwich” joke, the only one in the movie that they really liked, was stolen from Hell’s Kitchen.

    Supergirl (1984)

Don’t think they ever did Man of Steel.

Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation (1986)

I think I saw this at some point, because I definitely remember Dark Heart. Was this the only Care Bears movie with him in it, or were there others? Also, my sister’s obsession with the Care Bears lead to her going through a phase of always answering the question of “Do you care if I... (eat this last cookie, borrow your toy, etc.) with a “YES!” because she wanted to be a Care Bear, and they care about everything.

    Foodfight! (2012)

They need to do this movie, and it sounds like the perfect time to finally have Nathan Rabin on the show.

    Airplane vs. Volcano (2014)

Just...that title! Surely even the title makes it a good choice! People will be more likely to listen just because the title of the film caught their attention while they were browsing through their podcasts.

Which Movies Does HDTGM Absolutely Need To Review?

Somehow it never occurred to me they might be avoiding a few obvious “bad movie classics” like Manos for this reason. Even glancing over the complete HDTGM list, the only movie I can think of that both have done is Mac and Me, and that one was done by the podcast waaaayyy before MST3K. They’ve also done a lot of movies that MST3K spinoffs, like Rifftrax, have done. It’s always been weird to me that 200+ episodes in, they’ve done several of the classics, like The Room, Birdemic, and The Star Wars Holiday Special, but have still left several others on the table, like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Manos, and Troll 2. Also, they need to do all three of those ones I just named.

    Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

Aside from movies aimed at someone way outside my demographic, this was one of the first movies I saw and thought was dumb. You know how half the movies that get posted on this forum and done by the podcast are ones that everyone says they loved when they saw them as kids/teens? Not this one. The biggest dumb thing I remember is the whole disease thing. It somehow is supposed to kill him in exactly x amount of time, and he just barely makes it and also starts getting better the second he takes the antidote. But moreover, diseases aren’t really that great of a match for an action hero. They’re just...too passive of a threat, I suppose. Imagine James Bond getting syphillis and the climax of the movie being him getting treated for it just in time. Yeah. Plus the whole “action hero is cured of a bioweapon disease just in time” thing was already done by Bruno the Kid, and they did a much better job. I also remember people laughing in the theater at the 3.001st and final surprise mask removal.

    Caddyshack II (1988)

Bump because I’ve just been given this as part of a large pile of unwanted DVDs. Do it before I sell it to my local used media store!

    Heil Honey I'm Home (1990)

Now I’m intrigued by the idea of an episode dedicated to terrible shows. Cop Rock has a lot of potential here.

200th Mini Retrospective Clip Show Spectacular!

Heh, I might have put nore effort into my post on the HDTGM200 thread had I known there was a chance it would get read on the minisode.

    Son of the Mask (2005)

I bought Heckler from a used DVD rack because the box promised to be a great docu about stage hecklers, as it was for about 20 minutes. Then suddenly Kennedy goes “You know who’s just like hecklers? MOVIE CRITICS!” Then it takes a hard turn and the rest of the movie is him crying that no one liked Som of the Mask. I won’t threadjack too much about it, but it can’t even keep from constantly contradicting itself. Suffice to say that when it came time to move, the box for my DVDs was one slot too small and this one lost out to a pirated copy of Borat that I have never watched.

    Troop Beverly Hills (1989)

My girlfriend subjected me to this movie mostly out of her personal nostalgia. Oof. After a while I started thinking of it in HDTGM terms. Instead of having specific moments that change the characters or changing gradually, they just sort of change in chunks. The self-absorbed, materialistic main character is suddenly less so, then suddenly a little more less so, etc. Everyone wants to completely disband/quit the second any time they face any difficulty, no matter how vague and no matter how much they’ve already gotten through. The scoutmaster is apparently allowed to make up her own badges. The whole bit with the fallen tree sent me over the edge. They don’t even consider another way around. The leader tries to cross it by walking over it like a damn balance beam instead of crawling across it, which even children know would be far less risky. She falls on her face and is perfectly fine and still on the tree. Her daughter rushes out to help her with no concevable plan (what can she possibly do?) and somehow falls down but not off as well, also somehow getting her foot stuck in the tree. This despite already being established as a gymnast who is even seen practicing on a balance beam.

    Addicted To Love (1997)

It certainly worked when they did an episode on All About Steve.

    Rubber (2010)

I saw the trailer for this well before it came out and thought it looked completely awesome in an intentionally so-bad-it’s-good kind of way. Then I finally caught it on Netflix in 2014 and it was underwhelming. It was 50% the intentionally-ridiculous action movie that I had been promised, and 50% a weird, artsy-fartsy (and I say this as a creative video artist of sorts myself) analogy about audiences and consumerism that doesn’t work in the slightest. Really hackneyed stuff like an audience consuming poisoned food to symbolize audiences consuming garbage entertainment.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

I think the one thing that I knew about this movie is that it was an enormous bomb, but that the soundtrack spawned a mega-hit song. Looked it up and yep, “Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams came from this movie.

    Operation Dumbo Drop (1995)

I was about to say that I didn’t remember seeing this movie, but now I remember that. Weirdly, I also remember a hell of a lot of details about that scene, but nothing else about the rest of the movie.

    Episode 199.5 - Minisode 199.5

(Looks up “Action Jackson”) I wonder how many people will mistakenly watch the 2014 Bollywood movie of the same name?

    Celebrate #HDTGM200 !!!

What was your first episode of HDTGM? Star Wars Holiday Special. Downloaded it to listen to around Christmas 2016 before discovering that the show was not actually a look at how bad movies got made. Rediscovered it on a very long solo drive back from viewing the 2017 eclipse and fell in love. Finished that episode and went on to Garbage Pail kids and more. Made the 4-hour remaining drive bearable. Favorite catchphrase? “GEOSTOOOORRRM!” is the first one that comes to mind. “Putterinabra!” would be my least favorite for getting too run into the ground. A clip or moment that you'll always remember? (timestamps are nice ) The guy in Lake Placcid saying something like “I know of a metal tank in Portland that we can have...” also “Everyone’s a comedian, sarcastic.” The episode you revisit the most- I’m not big on re-listening to episodes, especially since I haven’t been through all 200 existing ones yet. The movie that you loved or hated watching- Did’t watch it for this show, but “Deck the Halls” is about the second-worst movie I’ve ever seen. How HDTGM fits into your weekly routine- Listen to it while I’m doing household chores. What the show has meant to you after all these years or any other sappy stuff It means I can get my household chores done!
