  1. Also, for the Twin Peaks Fans among us...

(WARNING : SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN TWIN PEAKS : THE RETURN)

So, seeing Grace Zabriskie, does indeed make me immediately think of her role as Sarah Palmer on Twin Peaks (as Jason so kindly pointed out in the episode).

Going a step further, for those who have seen Twin Peaks : The Return, I laughed at the idea that with Cooper resetting the timeline at the end, and wiping out Laura Palmer and Sarah Palmer from existing, we never saw what happened to Sarah Palmer (until now)!

You have Laura Palmer turned into "Carrie Page" out in Texas (as we see on the show) but what happened to Sarah Palmer??

We last see her frantically smashing the picture of her daughter as the timeline is reset and then...voila...

She wakes up in the 1980s New York of Body Rock, still instinctively...compulsively smoking cigarettes and watching TV (which she does about 99% of the time in Twin Peaks : The Return).

But now, in this new timeline, she has given birth to a whole other entity...

    Her son CHILLY!!!

  2. The Wayne's World Song -

It immediately caught my attention early on in the movie when the song "Why You Wanna Break My Heart" was on in the background in the club (it plays again in the ending credits as well).

This song is featured prominently in the 90s classic Waynes World and I had no idea it was a cover song and not an original number from "Crucial Taunt".

Sure, Tia Carrere covered Ballroom Blitz when Wayne first meets Cassandra, but it seemed like "Why You Wanna Break my Heart" had been tailor made to fit the onscreen rift that was growing between Cassandra and Wayne.

I had no idea it was a cover song, from the Body Rock soundtrack of all places.

    Quite the revelation...

  3. My mind is blown that my all time favorite podcast has picked Freejack (as I have long wished they would). I have been paying musical tribute to this film in various forms for years (tongue-in-cheek, but with real childhood sentiment mixed in) and am actively working on a 6 song EP of movie inspired songs, TWO of which are Freejack themed. Here is the first of them, about how Rene Russo still looks good after all these years...

P.S - I am aware that it's only an 18 year gap (not 30 years) and I could also see someone who hasn't seen the film being confused that I mean Mick Jagger when I say "put HIS brain inside my body", but HIS obviously means "Anthony Hopkins", it's just not explicitly spelled out because at the end of the day, they are song lyrics, not purely an exercise in Freejack plot exposition...

also, in my haste to get a version I could share with y'all, there is a weird little audio glitch in the first 3 seconds. It's not just you! :)

    ENJOY!!

  4. I don’t think he’s supposed to be sexy. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say he was cast for his boyishness. At one point in the movie, a screen pops up with some of Alex’s stats and it says he was born in 1955. His crash takes place in 1991 (which he confirms for himself by checking his wristband) which makes Alex 36 at the time of his death.

In movie, I’d say this might be a commentary on how well kept his body was, and consequently, why he’d be a desirable candidate. As far as production reasons, I’d say that his looks can, in the right circumstances (i.e. lighting, makeup, wardrobe, etc) make him appear older or younger than Rene as the scene required. He’s kind of like the anti-John Hamm.

Speaking of their age difference, my guess is, at the beginning of the movie, that Alex was supposed to be considerably older than Julie - say, 36 to her 25. This would make her ~43 (as opposed to ~53) at the end of the movie and actually close their age gap. Of course, I have no evidence to back any of that up, but I do feel like early 90’s movie execs would take real issue with the leading lady being *too* much older than the leading man.

My musical commentary on this theme...

  5. Did anyone else notice that two scenes from this movie are used in the 1993 film True Romance?

In that film, during the scene at the Safari Inn where Clarence (Christian Slater) and Dick (Michael Rappaport) discuss selling cocaine to a Hollywood mogul, Alabama (Patricia Arquette) turns on the TV and immediately the scene in Freejack with Renee Russo's closeup during Emilio Estevez's character's car crash blares onto the screen.

Later in True Romance, Dick's stoner roommate Floyd (Brad Pit) is zoning out in front of the television to the "mind battle" between Esteves and Anthony Hopkins.

When I first watched True Romance, I kind of figured that the producers used footage from Freejack due to solely to economic concerns (both films were released by Morgan Creek a year apart from each other). However, it's possible that the directer, Tony Scott (working from a script written by none other than Quentin Tarantino), was making a fairly pointed, sub-textual commentary on society's mindless, unquestioning consumption of garbage entertainment like Freejack.

Having never seen Freejack (up until this point, that is), it's two scenes in True Romance made it look absolutely bizarre and ridiculous (and it also give you a short and accurate synopsis of the film: guy dies, guy fights rich guy). I was pleasantly surprised to see, all these decades later, that Freejack is so, so, so much worse than portrayed in True Romance.

Also in the movie Stay Tuned, in the first few minutes, it's on the TV of the woman who (along with her husband) gets sucked into the TV.

I have this as one of the points I wanted to bring to Paul's attention via the paul-ask # ! :)

  6. Okay, so THIS is the movie that finally brought me onto the message boards after years of listening to this show! I LOVED this movie when I was a kid (I was probably 8 or 9 when I saw it the first time and practically wore out my VHS copy).

    Some interesting tidbits...

1 - Freejack has a companion 3 part comic adaptation. And yes, each one comes with a FREE GIANT POSTER!!

2 - The VHS copy started off with a bang! More specifically, a rocking Scorpions music video, with movie clips spliced in, for the killer track "Hit Between The Eyes" that plays over the ending credits...

    https://youtu.be/9OV6X8omXVU

3 - I love this movie SO much that, in my life as a musician, I have...

    A) an instrumental band called Freejack, with song names like "Nibble My Ear, For Luck" and "One Mississippi...Two Mississippi" (check it out on my SoundCloud page here https://soundcloud.com/user-4192054) and

    B) in one of my main projects, with vocals, we have not one, but two songs out of our upcoming 6 song EP that are dedicated to Freejack ("You Don't Need A New Body, You Need A New Soul" and "Rene"). Rene in particular has lyrics that would sound crazy to anyone unfamiliar with the film, but will absolutely delight anyone who has (you can find a Rene demo on that same Soundcloud page and I will be posting an updated version to my www.HomeBodyMusic.com site in the next day or two, in hopes of making it on the mini-episode!
