HA!!! Her love of the Diamond rubbed off on me.

Yes, Neil Diamond! I thought Coming to America was it's sequel before I saw it.

    Duck Soup

I can't say Duck Soup did anything in terms of comedy. I enjoyed some of the word play, but slapstick is just not my style. I also don't find it to be that innovative. It seems to me that they took their vaudeville act(s) and applied it to cinema now that they moved to talkies. The one thing I kept thinking when watching it was, "yeah, that would definitely not play in a silent film!" Did I think the mirror scene was great? Of course! But I'm not left really feeling like they did anything all that special for film. I agree with what's been said already, that I think it's a bunch of gags and word play strung together with no real story. I felt like I watched a variety sketch show with vignettes that were sort of related, but I don't feel like I watched a cohesive movie. It was okay, but I think there are a lot of really great comedies that could take it's place. Definitely something like Airplaine!* or Blazing Saddles. *At age 6 or 7, Airplane was the first time I ever saw boobs in a movie. That definitely stuck with me.

Oh my goodness, ditto!! That and Green Bay Packer games. I don't remember my parents really introducing me to any specific movies. My dad isn't a big movie fan (I don't ever remember him going to a movie). My mom didn't so much introduce us to movies except for maybe Wizard of Oz, and I know she looooooved The Jazz Singer and Grease.

Episode 200 - Action Jackson: LIVE!

I'd like to bring attention to that song, "Faraway Eyes" that Vanity sings to Coach. I mean, WTF? I I suppose it's a testament to Vanity's performance that she can almost sell this in the scene, but it's a complete word salad of a song: The part about the having daughters and sons?? Also, apparently the Stones had their own song called "Far Away Eyes." It had a slightly different tone. And by different, I mean rape-y.

I could also do Friday night. PS: If it's got Bette Midler, it qualifies as a musical to me

    The African Queen

I agree that the backstory doesn't play into my ranking of a movie, personally. It might give me an extra appreciation for a performance (such as Katharine Hepburn puking her guts out through that opening scene), but the film should be good on screen and be able to be interpreted/judged based on what you see. Certainly the difficulty of certain shots/locations, etc. can play into the technical achievements of a movie, I don't think they make it any better or worse. It depends on what you do with it. I also didn't know any of the backstory for Apocalypse Now, and none of it made me like it any more. It kind of just made me dislike Francis Ford Coppola. If we're judging and adding movies to the AFI top 100 based on backstory, The Room should be up there

Episode 200 - Action Jackson: LIVE!

Loved this movie! Love Vanity! Everything she touches is gold. I grew up watching The Last Dragon on a seemingly endless loop and have been in love with her ever since. We can add Roger Ebert to our Vanity fan club. I don't agree with Ebert's review, overall (obviously), but he's spot on regarding Vanity. ETA: For your re-watching pleasure, Action Jackson is currently free (with ads) on Vudu.

To clarify, I think June was saying this was the 2nd Vanity movie in a short amount of time, being so close to Never Too Young to Die.

    The African Queen

I felt exactly the same for this scene, and actually had a similar thought regarding King Kong. I found myself paying more attention to the messiness of it all instead of the action of the scene. Overall, I find this movie great in theory. I loved the performances of Bogart and Hepburn, I love the idea of going down the river on a suicide mission, I love the idea of Rose being the driving force behind it, but I found the pacing to be far too slow in parts, and I was bored for sections of the first half. I also thought the ending seemed off in comparison to the rest of the adventure. I agree with Cameron H's allegory, and I buy that that's where they were going, but I just feel lukewarm about the total package. That said, one scene I loved was when Rose was giving Allnutt the silent treatment, nose in Bible, and just completely freezing him out. And after he's been apologizing over and over for being a lousy sot, she yells at him, saying that she's angry that he's given up on going down the river and broke his promise. I just always love, love, love Hepburn and the pluck she brings to her roles.

I agree. As a non-parent, myself, with many parent friends, I would just send my apologies that I have other plans, that I acknowledge said friends' celebration, and hope we can all get together soon. While I understand that my parent friends have a certain level of difficulty in making plans to "get the gang together," as it were, as we get older, it's just harder to make schedules match. You have no need to feel guilty, and I'm sorry you're being put in that position.

    Celebrate #HDTGM200 !!!

Okay, long sappy post now: What was your first episode of HDTGM? I don't remember the exact first one. I had been introduced to the podcast during a weekend about three years ago with my brother/best friend as we have always bonded over quoting movies to each other and our love for B-movies. My first few episodes were probably Masters of the Universe, Airborne, and Hackers because those were some of my favorites growing up. I just adored how Jason, June, and Paul treated each of the movies with the kind of nerdy love I always felt, ad they were just so funny. I've been working my way through the backlog since then. Favorite catchphrase? "Hows yo' dick?" by Nicole Byer re: JCVD's splits. A clip or moment that you'll always remember? (timestamps are nice ) The one that immediately comes to mind is from The Lake House episode when Aisling Bea and Jason were going back and forth about time-travel-magic-mailbox sex. That made me laugh uncontrollably at my desk with tears running down my face. Of course there's also the Sleepaway Camp episode already mentioned. And basically everything June said during the Striptease episode. The episode you revisit the most Was just re-visiting The Lake House this morning since I finally watched it for the first time on Neflix. I could listen to that one over and over. I haven't revisited a lot of them, though, because I'm still working through the archives. The movie that you loved or hated watching Loved: Hercules in New York, Miami Connection, The Room, Xanadu, Can't Stop the Music, Teen Witch, The Last Dragon, Sleepaway Camp Hated: Theodore Rex, Batman & Robin, Tiptoes What the show has meant to you after all these years or any other sappy stuff The show itself provides a bright spot to my week that I look forward to every Friday. It's a great way to start off the weekend after dealing with the seemingly unrelenting chaos of the rest of the world. It's just an hour or so each week when I can relax and just enjoy some silliness and laughter over some really fun movies I might not have otherwise experienced. I also love nerding out over the movies and episodes with my brother when we have a chance to get together (he's in my home state of WI and I live in DC). The boards have provided a whole new level of engaging with movies, and the community in ways I don't necessarily have the opportunity to do. (Let's be honest, not everyone is so bonkers over bonkers movies!). The respect and acceptance everyone shows toward each other makes this a really special place. It brings a lot of just pure joy. I don't think I'm as articulate as I'd like to be, but its just heartwarming to have found this place and this podcast. I echo the thanks and love to Paul, June, Jason, their guests, and everyone at Earwolf who keeps these forums and the shows running.

    Celebrate #HDTGM200 !!!

As a relative newbie, I feel the same about this place. I had a hard time setting up an account up until the time the most recent changes were made to the page. I'm so glad to no longer be a lurker, and to have a community of people who have very thoughtful, kind, insightful things to say about movies, and the world. It's a great respite from everything else. Longer post with actual responses later.

I had to google the "nuke the fridge" clip since I've never seen Crystal Skull. The thing that stuck out to me the most about that was what any good student of Punky Brewster Very Special Episodes knows" you should never ever hide in that type of fridge because you can't let yourself out and you'll suffocate to death. That Fergie song is painful to listen to and the sample is jarringly misplaced.

Musical Mondays Week 50 The Girl Can’t Help It

I think it's fair to say TGCHI includes a rebuke to rock and roll in Fats's character. I'll agree that it takes (maybe unintended?) an ambiguous stance to rock and roll. But I think it's ultimately celebrating it as a new and exciting sound and including so many musical acts in 90 minutes. Fats critiques how, in his opinion, the rock musicians can't sing and don't need natural talent as long as they can create something new that people haven't heard before, and maybe the tunes are considered rebuked by Jerri's unwillingness to be part of the music industry. I''m still just not sold that it's main aim was to parody all rock and roll. It parodies Jail House Rock with the Rock in a Rock Yard song, but the filmmakers go out of their way to include and promote the actual stars in the show. Query - is there something to be said about the protagonists all being white, and critiquing/appropriating a burgeoning Black style of music? Or am I looking too much into 50's fluff?

Musical Mondays Week 50 The Girl Can’t Help It

I think the Wiki page is just incorrect. It doesn't seem to cite any sources for that assertion. I can't imagine getting all those acts in one movie that turns out to be an attempt to mock them and their entire style of music? ETA: Here is TCM's take - http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/76287/The-Girl-Can-t-Help-It/articles.html "Filmed by 20th Century-Fox, The Girl Can't Help It was a musical comedy, written by producer/director Frank Tashlin (who had directed Warner Bros. cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck) and Herbert Baker, based on the 1955 novelDo Re Mi by director Garson Kanin. Also in the cast were Tom Ewell, Henry Jones, Edmond O'Brien, Juanita Moore, Barry Gordon, Abby Lincoln, and Julie London. To appeal to teenagers, the filmmakers threw in several rock-n-roll stars like Eddie Cochran, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, The Platters, and Little Richard (who sang the title song, written by London's husband, Bobby Troup). The plot, which is squeezed in-between seventeen musical numbers in only ninety-three minutes, revolves around mobster boyfriend "Fats" Murdock's (O'Brien) desire to make his girlfriend Jerri Jordan (Mansfield) a famous singer. The problem is, Jerri's voice is so bad, it shatters light bulbs. That doesn't stop Fats, who hires press agent Tom Miller (Ewell) to promote her. Miller made his ex-girlfriend Julie London (playing herself and singing Cry Me a River ) a star and he doesn't get involved with his clients. Miller manages to get Jerri work, but learns that she doesn't want to be a star; she just wants to be a wife and mother (another theme of the 1950s, the era of the "baby boom"). "

Musical Mondays Week 50 The Girl Can’t Help It

So there was that line from Fats that rock musicians weren't talented singers, they were just offering something new. Thus, Jerri could be a star as long as she had a new sound. But I don't buy that that was the movie's thesis. If it were mocking rock music, it seemed to fail if it inspired the Beatles?
