Episode 213 - Shanghai Surprise (w/ Jordan Rubin)

A google image search of "Chinese war propaganda posters" (I highly recommend this search) yields a bunch of posters that are similar to that. But that completely looks like Link.

I agree! She was easily the best part of the movie. Even the bad line-reading and everything; I couldn't take my eyes off of her when she was on screen.

Musical Mondays Week 65 Cold War

I'm kind of sad this didn't garner more discussion. I loved Cold War, though I will agree that it is light on plot. It felt more of a tone poem than an epic love story. But I found the leads completely captivating, and Zula's jazz solo stuck in my head for weeks. I don't really have much of a defense for what's been said or why it failed to land. I guess I like it despite it's shortcomings. Also, RIP Calamity Jane

HDTGM Classics Cool as Ice (5/10 9PM EST)

Gah! I forgot about this and missed it yet again. At least I was out seeing Long Shot, which was absolutely delightful!

    All the President’s Men

Thanks! I'll have to check out the Fuller film.

Madonna is really exceptional in this one.

    Tootsie

I love that podcast too, and would love to hear their take on Tootsie. It most definitely fails the Bechdel test. I'm not even sure two women talk to each other, let alone about something other than men. This is so blatantly a movie by bros trying (at least seemingly genuinely) to be woke, and failing. I mean, Geena Davis is literally only there to provide exposition while in her underwear. I suppose, like pin ups in men's lifestyle magazines, straight men can watch this and still be confident in their straightness; look! naked ladies! That reminds me, I did like how Dustin Hoffman reacted to people questioning whether he was gay. I think that was pretty good. The rest of the movie, meh.

    Tootsie

I'm definitely for kicking this one off the list. Oddly, I'd support The Sixth Sense being on the list over this one, only because it actually did something for the genre. Here, I think it's fine. But for a movie about empathizing with women, there are so. many. dudes. All the main characters in the film are men; jessica Lange and Teri Garr are both just there for Hoffman to have his big "ah hah" moment. The female executive who hires Dorothy is definitely a character I'd like to have seen more of. It's not really about women at all, and I definitely don't see it as a "Feminist" movie. No, Hoffman in a dress isn't the joke itself, but the fact the homophobia from Julie's dad when Hoffman gives the ring back really bothered me. As far as dudes in drag for work, I'd much prefer Some Like it Hot. That did it so much better, and was so much funnier and warmer. None of this is to take away any inspiration this movie may have played in people's lives in opening up their minds to non-traditional gender expressions. I just don't find this movie holds up so well, and I don't understand at all why it's considered one of the top 100.
  9. If she's a senior, it's possible that their school had a special photo session for the class. Our school had semi-mandatory professional photo shoots for seniors, and I'm pretty sure it's not that uncommon. Plus, she's Mary Lou!!
  10. Ooooh! I got to see this one twice in the theatre. I'm excited to re-visit it and hear what you all think!
  11. That is the worst!! I've been having a hard time coming up with something to say beyond what's already been said, so I'll use this as a jumping off point: 1) I think Mary Lou was trapped in purgatory and her spirit was kept with the tiara and sash in the trunk, which was opened because the pregnant girl (my favorite character by the way) was looking for a prom dress in the school's storage of props, etc. When the trunk opened, Mary Lou's spirit was awakened and ready for revenge. To go on what Taylor was mentioning earlier, I think her spirit first was able to overtake and inhabit inanimate objects like the murder cape, and the Vicki's bed sheets, and then eventually is able to take over Vicki herself. As a side note, I think she chose to possess Vicki because she was dating Billy's son, maybe? I'll ponder the Hell thing, since I personally don't believe in a hell, but I could see that for people who do believe in Hell, they probably would think she deserves to go there. I do not. But i'm a bleeding heart liberal moral relativist Goodness, how I loved Charlize as a guest!

    Episode 211.5 - Minisode 211.5

Until I checked IMDb just now, I thought that they had the same actor for both 1957 Billy and 1987 Bill. I'm still not convinced they are two different people.

Musical Mondays Week 64 The Wicker Man

I actually watched this yesterday, and was not expecting how relevant it was to the time of year! I'm still wrapping my head around it. I think I enjoyed this one better. Especially considering the time in which it was released. It felt so of-it's-era, that I was more sold on the wacky premise. And the music seems so integrated that I'd hardly have called it a musical.

Musical Mondays Week 64 The Wicker Man

I just can't decide if this is more crazy or less crazy than the Nic Cage version.
  15. That's because rape jokes cross the line.
  16. Except that you said you basically meant, in your original post, that the momdaughter who rapes the dad. And, although it may be a hypothetical you posted, you chose to make it about rape.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

I haven't listened to the ep yet, but I might be with you on this. And I'm totally with you on the honesty/trustworthiness bit. Dobbs goes mad, not because he's greedy, but because his inability to trust leads to mad conspiracy theories about what the others are up to, likely based on his own ideas of what he'd do if he were greedy. I didn't not enjoy this one, but I don't think I find it that great. Everything is so blatantly explained and foreshadowed, that it feels a bit empty to me. But I do see its influence. And I liked the performances in it, generally.
  18. I think it all stemmed from the Greg/Marcia weirdness on The Brady Bunch!
  19. Still catching up on this thread, but wanted to address it... I agree with everything Taylor has said. I, too, had toxic relationships, particularly in high school and there's something about Edward's behavior that goes into triggering territory where Travis Bickle et al. do not. Yeah, he's intentionally creepy, but the audience is supposed to interpret that as a sign of love. Women and girls are brought up to translate men's aggression as affection. "He teases you because he likes you." And he's sneaking into Bella's room, and stalking her because he loves her. Or so the movie/books would have us believe. Men (I'm not even going to try to put a percentage on how many, but enough of them) act this way with girls and women, and we often interpret it as affection because that's all we see. Everywhere. All. The. Time. It takes a lot of counter-programming to get passed some of this stuff. Particularly for an audience of young girls who don't have the capacity to analyze the story or the language to discuss toxic masculinity, I think the author should have known better. You can make Edward weird and awkward and loving without making him a controlling, possessive, emotionally abusive stalker. She could have even kept in all the LDS messages she wanted. It was a choice to make him that way. A way that many boys and men actually think they can act around women. And as Taylor said, it normalizes it, and it shows girls that as long as you're meant to be together, and as long as it's true love, just stick with it. Don't' worry about what your friends and family are saying. Don't worry about all the warning signs. He just really loves you, and you're meant to be together, and definitely, as soon as you're married and have a baby, you'll all live happily ever after. I didn't quite mean to open a whole campaign against the movies, but I legit have a hard time watching that kind of relationship on screen because I've been in one. And yeah, maybe us women who've survived them are tough-as-nails now, but wouldn't the world be better if we could be tough without having to go through it?
