Wasn't this the entire premise of Lost In Translation?

I remember hearing the crew say something like, "take him home? He doesn't know where he is. He's blind!"

I found not only was the slow motion particularly awful, I felt like some scenes looked like they were straight out of the room. Maybe it was bad lighting, but some of the scenes looked like they were part of a film student project. Also, the more I read about what Dragon Blade was about, the less I understand it. Quick point of correction/clarification: When Jackie Chan is about to shoot John Cusack, and Cusack says "Take me home." My interpretation of that was him asking to be killed. "Home" is death or the afterlife. I don't think he was actually asking to be brought back home, unless he was asking Chan to return his body to Rome. Awful line, either way.

I would like to imagine it's about those awful date rape jokes when she wakes up in the guy's bed! That was awful. But yeah, very prudish indeed.

I have a feeling the R rating was because of the weed scene. Even if it was accidentally (?) ingested, I think Americans are just more concerned about drug content.

I agree that Spike Lee really did a lot with the camera work on this. On my first viewing I came in during the LSD scene, and I think he really captured the mood of the piece in a way that you couldn't get just by being in the audience. Also, yes, the way he captured the emotion in people's faces. I take it as a credit to the piece itself that he decided not to adapt it for the screen. This isn't something that I think would translate at all to cinema because I think you need the physical space of the stage, and Stew in the background, and part of the band. You also get the shots of the audience participating and singing along in the aisles. I think he brought some of the best benefits of camera work to a theater piece. Per the Wiki page, he used something like 17 cameras over three performances to capture everything. Oh, not to mention the actors were able to emotionally go there with their performances with all the cameras around them in ways they aren't normally. That said, I found some of the actual music tiring by the end of Youth's time in Germany. It seemed to all run into each other and sound the same. But maybe it was my particular mood when watching it, or maybe that particular sound isn't my style. Though I really loved the punk song and "vatsinsideisjustalie." I'm on the fence on this one. I really appreciate it as an interesting marriage of cinema and theater, but I don't know that I'll be revisiting it often...

Right?! Now, whether or not he says something should be entirely dependent upon what his current relationship is with his sister. If they're close enough, I'd say go ahead and have a heart-to-heart, but don't say, "why are you marrying this dud?" Say something like, "I just want to make sure you're happy and are doing this for the right reasons. Are you happy?" And if she says she is, then try to be happy for her. You're not the one marrying him. If she loves him as he is, let her do it. OR, let her make her own mistake. I'm sure she's probably already picked up that her brother's response to the hubby-to-be has been less than enthusiastic. But it's really her choice and not yours. You love your sister, Respect the autonomy, even if you don't like the guy. I say this as a sibling to someone who married worse than a dud. We talked about it before. He knew how the family felt, but we accepted his decision. He's divorced now, but they were together for 15 years.

Side note: After watching Spider-verse a second time last night, I think animation is severely underrepresented on the AFI.

Amy Adams was probably the only reason I derived any non-ironic joy out of watching.

I agree with a lot of what's already been said. I've really warmed to super hero and MCU movies over the last couple of years. To me, Spider-verse was maybe one of the best movies I've seen in years. It was so creative and imaginative. I'm not steeped in all the earlier movies, and found it stood on its own really well, as did Black Panther. Now, let me just say some things about Paul's opinion on Christian Bale's performance in Vice. A) that movie was laughably terrible. (though Amy Adams and Steve Carrell are amazing in it). B) I'll give that Christian Bale looked the part, but the performance was so one-note. Always in that gravelly, sort of talking out of the side of his mouth, and never emotionally reaching for anything. It was stale. I kept getting distracted by the mix of makeup and CGI. C) The movie itself really felt like a highlights reel of Cheney's career, without ever really examining him as a person or giving him an arc aside from 9/11 PTSD. C) I won't call Bohemian Rhapsody a stellar work of art, but I took it as playing with camp, and not taking itself too seriously. Rami Malek in the second half of that movie does wonders, even if the script is cheesy. And at least that movie was fun. Vice, not so much.

Sorry for dropping off abruptly. My WiFi went out on me last night and I missed the remainder of the movie. I definitely will need to rent and watch the whole thing.

I really wish Barry Jenkins's Medicine for Melancholy was still on Netflix. It's a gem! Although Moonlight is now on Amazon Prime.

I know we're already 6 days into a short month, BUT.... I was wondering what everyone would think about doing films by Black directors for February, given that it's Black History Month, and we're already doing a Spike Lee film for Musical Mondays

100% agreed on this and @taylorannephoto said! I also thought it was so disappointingly dated that Lay-o said something like, "What? You think I wouldn't like you just because you like guys?" That felt sooooo much like the Seinfeld, "not that there's anything wrong with that" episode.

I just don't know what June was talking about with the hair and makeup crew. I've never seen Hayden Christensen look so good! Ha! By the way, I have a theory that Hayden is fundamentally incapable of creating on-screen chemistry with anyone.

Looking forward to a (second) Spike Lee musical joint! I was snowed-in and caught in a winter weather/FAA/shutdown loop of doom for the film and didn't have a chance to watch or participate. This is a good one to jump back in with!

Not to mention, assuming the pot was prepared properly, people wouldn't start feeling or acting high for a good 1-2 hours after. How long have they been hanging out at this place? (Although, if it's the retirement community, they might be taking their time.)

Right! So, in all the time Luigi has been "Luigi" he never once told Lay-o WHY he was turned out on the streets, or what happened with his family? Did the Italian community welcome him with open arms while he was also closeted? And why did he adopt an Italian persona, again? Are they really welcoming while also humoring him in pretending he's not Asian? Just, what? How did these people meet? How close can they possibly be? FWIW, the gag reel clip with the cock sock was hands down the best part of the film.
