  1. Sorry for the late post, all! I don’t know if it’s been chosen before or not, but in honor of summer spectacle, my choice is the coked-to-the-gills masterpiece...The Blues Brothers! They’re on a mission from God! (Happy to switch the choice up, since it’s primarily available on STARZ. Let me know!)
  2. Especially if his name is Michael Bay.
  3. This movie is fucking bonkers and this episode is hilarious. The movie joyfully encapsulates all the cheesy 80s action cliches plus it has set design and dialogue that have to be seen/heard to be believed. Other elements include: Stallone as a “smart” cop who plays the stock market. A cross-dressing Kurt Russell Teri Hatcher in a terrible dance sequence with drums in a strip Club (?) An actor who is not British doing a terrible accent as one of the villains A weird rip-off of Q from James Bond Clint Howard Jack Palance giving an insane performance in which he appears to have a sexual fetish for mice! And more! On STARZ now! WORTH IT!!!!!!!! And the HDTGM episode with Nick Kroll is super awesome. here’s the trailer:

Flashback: Episode 102: Tango & Cash

But yes, more Steven Seagal (or is it Segal? I could look it up, but I don’t think he’s worth it)!

Flashback: Episode 102: Tango & Cash

While I like Walter Hill films in general (I think his script for The Getaway (the Peckinpah version) and The Driver (which heavily influenced Baby Driver and Drive) are my favorites. While his 48 Hours set the template for 80s buddy cop movies, it’s so unpleasant to watch that it’s one of my least favorite of the genre. It’s well-Made and has Eddie Murphy’s breakout performance, but it’s so gritty that it feels genuinely sleazy and the race-baiting is tiresome. I think that’s why I reacted to Tango & Cash in a surprisingly positive way, because while it’s super-derivative and does not have a functioning brain in its creative head, it’s fun! It feels like a bunch of people on coke trying to come up with cool shit and making completely disjointed trash instead (probably because they were snorting coke the whole time).

Musical Mondays Week 92 Mamma Mia!

Otherwise I agree with this! But I would replace Walters with Seyfried for a K.

Musical Mondays Week 92 Mamma Mia!

Your fatal flaw: You left Amanda Seyfried (or at least her character) off this list).
  9. I am also dealing with the stress of not knowing where I’ll be working next school year, or what it will look like, so I do have more urgent things going on then “what will we watch tonight?” Just to clarify.
  10. Been awhile since I posted here. I am lucky to have my parents two blocks away from me, so I have family to spend time with, although I am also pretty much the only person they see in person every day, so it’s overwhelming sometimes. Our entertainment tastes don’t exactly match (my dad) could spend the whole evening watching the news/PBS shows like Father Brown), so it’s a bit of a chore finding something that entertains everyone equally. I’ve done a decent job, but suggestions are always welcome.... what we’ve been watching recently: Schitt’s Creek—we’re new to this one, but enjoying it. The Blues Brothers (holds up surprisingly well) Stumptown Pain and Glory (the latest Almodovar, which was quite good) Brooklyn Nine-Nine (unfortunately the season seems to have halted) Too many TV shows that we’ve started, are good, but have a hard time feeling compelled to continue (Mrs. America, Ramy, Dead to Me). If there are any particularly great episodes of these, I might keep going). If it were up to me, I’d juice it up with thrillers or pulpier shit, but I have to appeal to people who are in their 70s. I know this isn’t really a problem—world being what it is—but it is....mundane I think the new Kumail Nanjiani movie is on tonight, maybe we’ll watch that....

Musical Mondays Week 92 Mamma Mia!

And honestly, I watched this movie on Monday night and totally forgot about it until now.

Musical Mondays Week 92 Mamma Mia!

I don’t think THIS movie is very good—whatever you think of ABBA—but the sequel got an 80% critical approval on RT whereas this one got about 50%, which seems about right based on what I witnessed. I didn’t HATE this movie, but I watched this with my parents (who live two blocks away) as a way to handcuff myself to it to make myself finish it. I think it’s OK, but basing a musical around ABBA is a terrible idea, absolutely. i also know what it looks like now to see Meryl Streep in CBS sitcom-level material so there’s that. I gotta say, in terms of the characters, I did HATE Amanda Seyfried’s character because her idea is so fucking reckless and dumb, with no thought to anyone else’s life except her own. I know this is fluff, but I still found her extremely hateable. I think Amanda Seyfried has been good in roles I’ve seen, but when it comes to a character this clueless, maybe she performed it so well that it felt like nails on a chalkboard.
  13. Yes, you have to have STARZ to have access To Mama Mia on Hulu. I’ll actually defend Hulu’s movie collection because it has a surprising variety of independent/foreign movies. For example, a lot of Bong Joon-Ho’s movies are on there right now, including Parasite. If you’re looking for more mainstream films, they are there, but they’re not really Hulu’s main priority. if you subscribe to STARZ right now, it’s around 4.99 a month (on its own, not through Hulu), which is the same price as renting it. STARZ also has Pain and Glory exclusively (the Almodovar movie that came out in 2019). It kinda sucks that so many movies are streaming exclusively on so many different platforms, but that’s what we’re heading for, I guess.
  14. I think somewhere my choice got skipped🥺, but I’ll use the opportunity to promote my playlist again ( which is posted elsewhere, but I might as well post it in as many threads as possible because I DESPERATELY NEED ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sob). Episode 239 - Cool World

I haven’t watched the movie yet but I will (??). I just wanted to say that it was extremely funny hearing everyone on HDTGM try to describe the plot. Every time someone—especially June—started a sentence making a semi-serious point saying “So when Doc Whiskers...” , I burst out laughing at how preposterous it sounded.

The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990)

the screenwriter Daniel Waters—who also wrote/was involved with Heathers, Hudson Hawk, Batman Returns, Demolition Man and more—freely admitted that this is the worst film that he worked on.
  18. Ok, this is my first “official” playlist (as opposed to a link of my ENTIRE catalog of music)! It runs a little over an hour. Musical Mondays Week 91 Hello Again

I remember loving this as a kid. I’m scared to watch it as an adult.

Musical Mondays Week 91 Hello Again

Sadly, I completely forgot about this because I was filling out job applications all week. Everyone’s reactions makes me weirdly thankful for ...annoying paperwork???!!
  22. If you’re lucky, it’s streaming on your library’s streaming service for free. I enjoyed it very much but IT IS BONKERS!!!
  23. Sorry about your job/salary. Your bedroom looks much cleaner (and brighter and greener!) than mine right now. I’m still in my “I’ll dump this shit over here and pick it up later” phase.
