  1. Haha! I VAGUELY remember that movie. I actually went to see that in the theater when I was a kid, but I’d watch anything that I could get into and wasn’t very discerning. Hello Again, Raising Arizona, Spaceballs, Police Academy 4...all hits (I use that term loosely) from 1987 that I saw in 1987 at the age of twelve. sixth grade SUCKED, basically, so I took any escapism I could get. Although Raising Arizona remains one of my all-time favorite Coen brothers movies.
  2. That was fucking awesome! Nacho Vigdaloo certainly likes making films with stalkers in them. Other than Timecrimes, Colossal is on Hulu. I don’t know if I love that movie, but it’s definitely unique. I did really like his episode of Into the Dark—also on Hulu—called Pooka! About a man who has a very odd relationship to a child’s toy. Very trippy, fucked up and funny. he also made a thriller with Elijah Wood called Open Windows that was bad. I don’t remember if it was HDTGM-level, but I know it didn’t work.
  3. Sorry you’re feeling stressed. I haven’t watched the film either and I’ve listened to about half the episode before stopping. Honestly, it’s the most earnest discussion about a film that I think I’ve heard them have, with jokes and anecdotes at a bare minimum. For me, some of the most entertaining moments in past eps have been when the gang tells personal stories. In the 47 minutes that I listened to (out of 83), there was nothing like that happening. it was fun to hear Adam Scott and Jason comment about the $20 price tag, but that’s about it. I’ll probably finish the episode at some point, but if you need something fun and accessible, I wouldn’t recommend it. if you need help processing our current pandemic, BTW, I HIGHLY recommend the podcast Staying In with Emily and Kumail. It is a podcast that makes use of both of their comic talents and Emily’s background as a therapist. Not every moment of the podcast is light and fun, but I have depression and truly find it therapeutic to listen to. It is my favorite podcast that has been created because of COVID. That sounds weird but it’s true!

  5. I have no idea how Netflix Party even works, but I think this would be an excellent candidate for a new HDTGM film! Let me know if you’re interested and maybe we can figure it out! here’s a Peter Travers review: https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-reviews/extraction-review-chris-hemsworth-netflix-987402/

    Love Wedding Repeat (2020)

That documentary was great! I largely like Apatow as well. Plus Freaks and Geeks will always be a fucking classic.

    Love Wedding Repeat (2020)

I dunno, I think the trailer has some red flags. It looks less Four Weddings and more “wacky Brits try for Judd Apatow-style comedy” Which could be fine, but looks strained even within these two minutes. Alternatively, Judd Apatow was involved with Juliet, Naked, which I just watched on Hulu. It’s a low-key British Rom-com based on a Nick Hornby book. It stars Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd. It did a nice job largely eschewing typical tropes and was pretty funny. Recommended. For some reason, whenever I type Apatow, my phone wants to change it to Zapatista. Hahaha!
  10. Do you remember the “reality-based” tv specials from the 80s and 90s that aired on Fox all the time, sometimes right before/after an X files episode? They’d show an interview with a man or woman claiming they could feel a ghost beside them in bed, or the ghost levitated their bed, or it turned the channels on their television, etc.? THEN they’d have cheesy, documentary-like “footage” of it (or a re-enactment) with terrible effects? Now you have it in White Noise! I genuinely like Michael Keaton and feel bad that he is in this dreck. This is the type of movie that has The camera circle around its characters to create tension because THERE IS NONE ONSCREEN. Every moment of this movie feels as fake as an infomercial. But Michael Keaton tries his best. Even the TRAILER barely shows anything from the movie, which should tell you something, and it recreates the tone of the movie pretty well. Here it is:

    Musical Mondays Week 90 Hair

Speaking of hair, I haven’t had a haircut in forever. OK, I will stop now.

    Musical Mondays Week 90 Hair

Just want to add that the school I work for is doing all it can in every way. This is not a critique of my co-workers and admin—who are all awesome and working very hard—it’s just a portrait of my headspace at this point during rona.

    Musical Mondays Week 90 Hair

I am interested in watching this, but because time really has lost most of its relevant meaning I flaked out. As an assistant in a special ed class, I’m very lucky to still be getting paid by the district right now but am in the very head-fucky space of (a) being on call for possibly working with students online (b) knowing that most of the students are not capable of working online because they have significant impairments or no internet connection (c) not knowing what the hell I would do what them if I got them online (d) no one else seems to know how to handle being online with them if it were to happen (e) pretty infrequent communication about what any expectations are (except for a weekly staff meetings on Microsoft Teams and occasional special ed meetings). Honestly, I would rather someone just literally said “we don’t have shit for you to do. If there is, we’ll tell you a week in advance so you can mentally prepare yourself.” also, I’ve been in the district for thirteen years, so I will PROBABLY have a job next year (again, I know I’m very lucky) but I don’t know that for sure or at what school or when school is going to even happen and what that’s going to look like. Basically things are so up in the air right now I feel like I’m tethered to a space station while floating in outer space. Although I guess there wouldn’t be air there so scratch that. Sorry, I know this is all off topic but this is what happens when I wake up a little before 3am, try to go back to sleep for half an hour, then say “fuck it,” pick up my phone, go to this forum and spew whatever’s flying through my head. To quote Lloyd Bridges from Airplane:

    Episode 237.5 — Prequel to 238

I totally agree! Honestly, that’s a large part of the reason why I don’t watch all the films they cover—I can’t afford to. Also..with a (usually) busy schedule, I like to balance crap that’s FUN to watch with stuff that’s actually...good. If it’s memorably crappy fare, no matter the budget—like I thought The Great Wall was—then I’m all in! If it’s a mediocre Movie that Jason or whomever regrets watching, then I usually feel ripped off either financially or time-wise. This is also—in large part—because I’m watching these movies by myself, so I often don’t have anyone to talk shit about it if it’s boring. i was also disappointed that Bloodshot was the next choice—or even done at all—but since I didn’t see how I was going To change that, that’s why I decided to be optimistic earlier. I like the texting idea. Hopefully it works!

    Episode 237.5 — Prequel to 238

They still haven’t aired their second film from Seattle (after Fateful Findings), a psychedelic sci-fi horror movie with John Huston called The Visitor. Both the movie and the show were a lot of fun. The movie has been available for free on library streaming services like Hoopla and might be available on Netflix or something. I don’t want to watch transformers either, but if they did it for a live stream—like Paul has done movies for Unspooled—you really wouldn’t have to. The Unspooled eps have been a lot of fun but it definitely helps to have watched the movie beforehand, whereas the Transformer movies are just CGI tin cans beating the shit out of each other. The fun there would just come from watching the gang riff on it. RE: Bloodshot—the film just seems boring and I won’t rent it. My feeling about HDTGM’s movie choices fall into two groups: (1)films that are fun to hear them talk about but I have no desire to watch (which is about 2/3 of the movies, honestly, and includes most modern blockbusters like The Meg and Skyscraper). (2) Films that are batshit enough to be funny/entertaining on their own (Fateful Findings, The Visitor, The Room, Death Spa, etc.). Bloodshot falls into the first category for me. Yeah, I wish they’d pick something more interesting (and cheaper to get), but I’ve felt that way about other movies they’ve picked and I’m sure the episode will still be funny. Also, I appreciate that they’re working hard to provide podcasts for free during this stressful time (with Paul—in particular—banging out free content nonstop). There have been times where I’ve really needed that entertainment, so it’s hard for me to get that critical of what they want to cover. There’s always the next episode!
  19. Also, for people who want a podcast that combines laughs, feelings and therapy, I HIGHLY recommend Staying In with Emily and Kumail. And this one, of course!
  20. Thank you! Sweet! I know everyone is processing our time with the coronavirus differently and can all use an outlet. Sorry you’re having a rough time with the news today—I think we’re all having a rough time with it. Personally, I’m taking a vacation from it this week. I hope you get your happy hair! I hope everyone feels free to post As much or little as they want, (about whatever they want). Autumn, I’m glad you replied so it didn’t feel like I was rambling to myself (a thought that has occurred more than once). The horror book club sounds fun—horror is one of my favorite genres. I’ve recently gotten Into reading horror novels by women. The Hunger was the first, currently working on The Shining Girls. Both are really good. What are you reading?
  21. Official Movie: Jupiter Ascending! This seemed to be the movie that most people agreed on. Runners up: Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Angels:Full Throttle.. I have not seen either of these, so let’s start with one in case it’s too excruciating to make it to two. Extra Credit: Whatever Other movies you want to pick. I might shoot for John Carter, Tremors, or Popeye. If people want to add extra credit suggestions for last minute viewing, do it!
  22. Just watched Juliet, Naked, a romantic comedy with Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd. Genuinely enjoyable! On Hulu.
  23. Also, for stuff that I’m reading: The Hunger, a historical fiction horror novel about the Donner party (BTW, demons play a role here and the cannibalism is not really on the menu as much as you might think). It’s really good and has the added benefit of making me realize how relatively lucky it is that I wasn’t born in pioneering times and that I wasn’t a member of the Donner Party.
