Musical Mondays Week 102 A Mighty Wind

"I didn't post here last week. " Wha Happened?" You might ask.(I was sick). Personally, I love this movie. It reminds me of all the cheesy PBS folk concerts I used to watch with my parents. It feels so spot on to me in terms of the music that I could believe it was a documentary about a PBS fundraiser. Plus, of all the Christopher Guest films, I just think it's the funniest. I watched Guffman and Best in Show this summer and they make me smile, but this one makes me laugh out loud. I would argue the point is less about the individuals having a traditional arc, but an examination of these peoples' love of this fossilized crap. That's why the shots of Bob Balaban's overly emotional sister and bored brother are important (and hilarious)-- they represent the audience who eats this shit up and/or is largely indifferent to it. I also think that the Eugene Levy/Catherine O'Hara characters give the story a more emotional core than.most of his films have (even if their relationship is bullshit, they bring a weird pathos to it).
  2. I haven’t seen that since I was a tyke!

    Cats for virtual Live Episode

I think a lot of people didn’t see it/are waiting for the podcast to drop.

Under the Cherry Moon - Post Movie Survey

I haven’t had time to watch the movie yet, but it’s on my list. If it’s not on a service I subscribe to I don’t always watch them, but this one sounds like a lot of fun (I did listen to the episode)! i did check out your survey (I didn’t take it since I haven’t watched the movie) and it seems very thorough. Great work!

    Cats for virtual Live Episode

I saw the play while I was in high school in the 90s. It has scarred me to this day. There are musicals that I enjoy, but this one and Jesus Christ Superstar make me believe that Andrew Lloyd Weber is the Antichrist. it was hilarious watching the live stream tonight because all of their complaints about the music/ “plot” of the movie echoed my bewilderment from 30 years ago. A great HDTGM episode! Some amazing, mind-blowing visual jokes that won’t make it onto the podcast. For those who missed it, you still have until 6 PM Saturday (I think) to watch it and it’s well worth it!
  6. I’ll also add that it had some glitches when playing on my IPhone. It worked, but I had to rig my phone so it wouldn’t lock while the episode was playing. Otherwise it would stop and the whole thing would start over again.
  7. I posted it before, but I’ll say it again: it’s fine, but not great. It definitely sounds like Jason and June are less than enthused about the whole idea. I feel like the money is going to a good cause, so it was worth it for me and the episode itself was kinda beside the point.

    My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)

That is a great article! I would be interested in their take on this.
  9. Were you bummed because they thought it could a bad precedent? Because I understand their concern and although the episode was fine and definitely for a good cause, it didn’t sound like they had that much fun. I don’t think you missed out, if you ended up missing the episode. You donated to a good cause and the episode had some funny parts, but was not a classic. Maybe because it comes on the heels of the Velocipastor episode, which had great tangents. This one legit sounds like they don’t want to be talking about this.

Dear Avril Halley, I double-dog dare you to watch...

From what I remember, it mutilates James Ellroy’s novel into The Snowman-level incoherence.
  11. I enjoyed it. I’m sure a lot of stuff was sanitized but it was entertaining.
  12. Looking forward to rewatching it! It might be my favorite of this crew’s films (the one where they make fun of the Academy awards is my least favorite).

Musical Mondays Week 101 The Runaways

If you’re familiar with the play, I don’t know why you’d need to see the movie to enjoy the HDTGM show. I’m kinda waiting to see if it comes on HBO beforehand. But I saw the play in high school and from what I can remember it’s just 90-120 minutes of pure WTFery. No plot or anything (if you can’t guess, I’m with you, the play sucks). The advantage of them doing an online live show is that you can still see the visual references they’re making without having to sit through this legendary piece of shit.

I would say Fantasy Island, but all the parts that are not hilariously terrible are genuinely boring. Plus I feel bad for Michael Pena, a talented actor given a truly bad role.
  15. I haven’t watched the movie since I was cajoled into seeing it in IMAX, so I still have a few psychological scars, but after a decade +, I think I’m OK.
  16. Isn’t that the sequence when the dad gets high on pot? Jesus, I don’t believe I remember that. That’s part of my brain that could be put to better use!
  17. Because 2 is more even more blatantly racist, stupid and generally more awful than 1 (which is mediocre but not AS bad). Either film you still have Bay ogling Megan Fox with his camera. No, I don’t think you have to watch it. If you want to get a taste of it, CinemaSins has an Everything Wrong With Video for it on YouTube. The whole movie is covered in twenty minutes as opposed to 2 1/2 hours.
  18. The only one I kinda liked because it was two different movies packed into one was The Island, and it was a flop. I won’t swear that it was good because I saw it over a decade ago and I only have “WTF” memories of it. I just remember thinking “this isn’t as bad as I would have thought,” and was fairly entertained by it. Otherwise I saw Transformer:Revenge of the Fallen with some friends (who were excited about it, I was along for the ride) in IMAX. We all thought it was a racist piece of shit. I’ve seen the stage version of Cats and know that the movie must have horrors in store, but I can’t imagine it being as racist. I also blame Bay for the image of Sean Connery as a long-haired hippie singing San Francisco off-key while in the shower on The Rock. I have only watched that movie once and it has been burned into my brain ever since.

    Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999)

I was interning at a shitty production company before this came out and got a chance to read the script. I was shocked at how bad it was in script form, so I never saw the movie.

The Sex Pistols don’t hold a candle to the true rebels:NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys.

Fuck it, one last Shannon post where he raps with a Russian accent, mystifying Judy Greer:

Musical Mondays Week 101 The Runaways

Wow, I’m not nearly as familiar with their music as you all are. I did have Joan Jett’s debut album on tape when I was in elementary school. I also had Thriller, y Rain and the Prince album after that one, Synchonicity and some Duran Duran. Then my taste switched to shitty soundtracks (the Dragnet soundtrack, anyone?) until I was in high school and listened to hip hop and R&B exclusively. As an outsider, I found the movie OK but kinda underwhelming. It was well-acted but I read that the film was made by a music video director and I thought it showed in all the wrong ways. The script felt like the outline of the band’s story rather than a dramatization of who they were and what motivated them. I felt like the movie was more interested in the visuals and would weirdly set up a scene or story beat only to have it abruptly end, so it felt perfunctory. I think the reason that Michael Shannon punched through for me was that his dialogue almost felt improvised compared to the rather flat dialogue everyone else had. I also thought Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning managed to give their roles depth even when the script didn’t. it was also odd that the movie’s soundtrack seemed to focus more on other bands than The Runaways themselves. Side note: I think the reason Cherry Bomb is insanely popular is because it’s on the awesome Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. That’s the only song I know from the band and that soundtrack is the reason why.

    Episode 248.5 — Minisode 248.5

The episode itself is hilarious and ranks among their best for random tangents. They can make a funny episode out of anything, it’s the film itself that sounds like shit, so I skipped it.
