No joke, I'm not letting ANYONE into my house unannounced. There's no way in Hell. I guess I wish Dan Stevens had been a little more charming. I know he's preying on their emotions, but even still, I would be even more suspicious of someone if the said they had been friends with my son and I had never heard of them. Yet, within ten minutes, she's basically asking him to move in.

I guess I never really got what the movie was going for. It starts off with some very dated 70's/80's Slasher movie style fonts with music that would be appropriate for that genre, but it never really goes there. I couldn't tell if the movie was playing it straight or being factitious, and that lack of intention made it kind of neither/nor for me.Ā

I get your points. My take on this movie ā€”which is the follow-upĀ from theĀ guys who madeĀ Youā€™re Nextā€”is that itā€™s subverting where you think itā€™s going from the jump (similar to youā€™re Next, but I actually like this film more).Ā

The key to the film to me is how DanĀ StevensĀ plays this character. I probably revealed too much last week saying he was psycho. When I saw it on the theater, part of the fun is youā€™re never QUITE sure where heā€™s coming from. Does he intend to harm the family? Or is he there because he legitimately wants to pay his respects but still has a screw loose?

The fun of the film is that thereā€™s no way to know for sure. Personally, I think he legitimately wants to help this family, not victimize them, but he is insane. In his head, breaking bulliesā€™ arms, killing the dadā€™s boss, teaching the son to stick up for himself by giving him psychotic motivational lectures is all things that his ā€œfriendā€ would have wanted. In his mind, he is genuinely being a good guy to them. He offers to leave at the beginning when he sees heā€™s upset the mom and I think he genuinely means it. Her taking him in is a combination of her neediness (and even the husbandā€™s although he wonā€™t admit it initially) and his twisted moral compass. Heā€™s happy to stay there while he does shady shit to earn money to pay for a plastic surgeon to escape Lance Reddick. Itā€™s a twisted two-way street. When the daughter reveals that sheā€™s onto him, he could simply kill the whole family, but he doesnā€™t want to do that. He even tells her to give him time and heā€™ll leave and I think that is his plan. Itā€™s only when Lance shows up that things spiral out of control.

Even at the end, when everyoneā€™s been slaughtered, I believe him when he says he forgives the son. In Danā€™s fucked-up worldview, the son has done the right thing by literallyĀ stabbing the bully (which is Dan)Ā in the back. since this earns Danā€™s respect, heĀ will let them slide and just go on to kill anyone else who gets in his way.

I might be a little behind this week. I've been phone banking all weekend with NARAL . I'm working for Joe Biden tonight !Ā  I'm just excited to be working for someone I actually know and not have to be worried about what district I'm calling that dayĀ or pouring over policy even though I probably didn't *need* to do that.Ā  Anyway make sure you jerks vote if you haven't already! Ans be kind to people who call you, we are people too!Ā

Thatā€™s awesome Gigi! Iā€™ve never been comfortable volunteering for a campaign like that, so congrats to you. Iā€™ve been donating weekly to actblue since the beginning of September and I voted. Might not be a huge contribution, but thatā€™s my part.

as for the movie, Cinco and I liked it but no one else seemsĀ to have really loved it, and itā€™s not a relaxing film.Ā If I were youā€”given your dislike of thrillersā€”Iā€™d find something uplifting to watch instead (especially for the next couple days)!

    fingers crossed!

This movie was released in 2014, but was it supposed to be set in 2014? Did I miss something? There were so many weird anachronisms? Burned CDs and bomb boxes? Really?

I still burned CDS in 2014, but Iā€™m an old-schoolĀ 46.Ā I donā€™t know what bomb boxes are??? They are out in the sticks, so itā€™s possible that widespread music streaming was not a thing and I doubt Dan Stephensā€™ character gives a fuck about iTunes since heā€™s carrying a burner.

  4. Also, to clarify, when I initially joined the group, I was told that any type of film COULD be picked, not just traditional musicals/music-related movies (I remember because I asked if there were any ground rules and was told no). Not trying to be confrontational in any way, shape or form, but if people would prefer more traditional films, that would be good to know.šŸ˜

  5. Sorry for the unpopular pick! I should have made it clearer when I picked it (although I did allude to this fact)Ā that it was a more tangentially musical Monday related because the soundtrack played a role in the film in the form of a mixtape (Us would have been my alternate choice because it uses I Got 5 on it in a similar way. Drive would also be another non-musical musicalĀ example in this vein). ItĀ was alsoĀ my attempt to include the Halloween horror/thriller vibe because I love horror movies.Ā

Sorry it wasnā€™t everyoneā€™s cup of tea (I hadnā€™t seen it for awhile and realized this might be the case when I was watching it with Cinco). Maybe Iā€™ll make a better pick next time! Though in my defense, Paul, Jason (I think) and Amy Nicholson love it (she gave it an A).Ā

You have to be friends with the admin or at least invited to the group.Ā  Let me know what your ID is and I'll send a friend invite.Ā  I try to send a room link about 15 minutes before the movie time.Ā  I don't think the link changes each time but you can't enter until I open the room.

You can also create your own room for your own shows.Ā  It's the sharing that gets tricky.Ā  I have found using Google Chrome works best for me.Ā  There's a Chrome extension to share browser tabs with Kast.Ā  When you start sharing in the room make sure to click "Share audio" in the bottom of the window before you click what you want to share.

I left you a message on your profile page, but givenĀ my general ignorance of how reliably information is conveyed on the interwebs, Iā€™ll repeat myself. My Kast name is SuperGraham (a somewhat dorky reference to first grade alter ego). Let me know if you need more information!

  7. I wanted to pick a good Halloween-themed movie with an emphasis on the soundtrack, so I went with... The Guest (I donā€™t think weā€™ve done it, or at least I didnā€™t see it on Cameronā€™s Letterboxed list)!

itā€™s unfortunately rental-only, as far as I can tell, so if people object to that (which I totally get, given our nationalĀ shitshow) I can come up with choices that are more widely available (my second choice would be Us, but again thatā€™s only on HBO).

  8. I havenā€™t watched the movie yet, but does June have a side job involving Parisā€™ tourism board? Or did she have a traumatic experience in her life involving an inability to travel to Paris? JuneĀ seems to care so deeply about Kellyā€™s disinterest in Paris that itā€™s clear this film hit some emotional chord for her. I pray for Juneā€™s emotional recovery and I might watch this movie to shed light on this mystery (Iā€™m agnostic, so I donā€™t know who/what Ā Iā€™m praying to, but I shall perservere! Also, I somehow doubt that the film will provide me with any answers at all, but I must try!).

  9. Some of my favorite parts:

    Jennifer Coolidge's open-mouthed humming

    Jane Lynch's WINC cult

HarryShearer's lecture about the Spanish Civil War and his abrupt exit.

    Fred Willard (RIP)

Bob Balaban's increasing obsessive compulsive behavior and his terrible introductions "The Type of infectious that's good to spread around."

    Eugene Levy/Catherine O'Hara

Seeing the folk.version of Spinal Tap

  10. "I didn't post here last week.

" Wha Happened?" You might ask.(I was sick).

Personally, I love this movie. It reminds me of all the cheesy PBS folk concerts I used to watch with my parents. It feels so spot on to me in termsĀ  of the music that I could believe it was a documentary about a PBS fundraiser.

Plus, of all the Christopher Guest films, I just think it's the funniest. I watched Guffman and Best in Show this summer and they make me smile, but this one makes me laugh out loud. I would argue the point is less about the individuals having a traditionalĀ  arc, but an examination of these peoples' love of this fossilized crap. That's why the shots of Bob Balaban's overly emotional sister and bored brother are important (and hilarious)-- they represent the audience who eats this shit up and/or is largely indifferent to it. I also think that the Eugene Levy/Catherine O'Hara characters give the story a more emotional core than.most of his films have (even if their relationship is bullshit, they bring a weird pathos to it).
