    Anaconda

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaconda_(film) You know, with Jon Voigt, Ice Cube, J. Lo..? . I'm not totally convinced the makers of this film were entirely unaware of its awfulness (and I'm assuming you guys are shying away from "self-aware" or tongue-in-cheek bad movies). But Anaconda is sort of in a class of its own. . I think its cult reception spawned a whole generation of big budget, ridiculous, bad dialogue movies like Deep Blue Sea (2 years later), Snakes on a Plane (turned down by 30+ studios in the mid 90s, but greenlighted in '99 after Anaconda), and probably even influencing recent stuff like Pirhana 3D. I'm sure if Anaconda hadn't been made, we would still have over the top disaster movies, but Anaconda was the perfect mix of famous actors and slick effects contrasted with unbelievable characters like Voigt's, crazy story writing, and tons of one liners and ridiculous action sequences.
  2. I think I agree with the folks saying "Just don't use it out of laziness." I think in comedy, gay, handicapped, etc. is all fair game for comedy, but you should use it intentionally. It's not THAT offensive, and I wouldn't oppose it strictly on grounds of offending, but it does offend a small percentage of people, and moreover its lazy in the same way as using "... sucks" is lazy. . I used to use "retarded" on a fairly regular basis until I started hanging out with a friend whose sister had a mental disability. He never asked me not to say "retarded", and I had used it in front of him occasionally, but knowing that it was still slightly offensive to him, and also how much he cared for his sister, I naturally trained myself out of saying it. And it was really easy to break the habit by just thinking an extra few milliseconds how to rephrase the same thought to the point where I never had an urge to use it in the first place. I think lazy speech in general should be avoided as much as possible

Should Chart Chatter Be At The Start?

What's that expression.. Overthinking a plate of beans? But now I'm thinking too. I don't have any conclusion, but some observations: . Positives for keeping it at the top: - Gives guests an idea of what the show may be like via fan commentary - Possibly provides fodder for recurring jokes (MATH ROCK!) . Negatives for keeping it at the top: - Uses time that could be spent getting acquainted with the guest (i.e. how the show was before chart chatter - what happened on the guest's way to the studio, what they've been up to lately, whatever..) - Not always enough momentum in the segment to get the ball rolling just out of the gates.

Episode 38 — The Return of Suit McGoo

All the recent math rock attention got me thinking. Why did all the mathy music dudes only get as far as rock? Why isn't there any math pop, math reggae, math country, math disco? Any professional musicians reading this: please get in the studio ASAP, and you can become the "founding fathers" of a brand new obscure sub-genre waiting to be milked for all its pretentious goodness!

Should Chart Chatter Be At The Start?

I dont mind it at the top, but maybe at least introduce the guest first. That way they know they're free to comment on the chatter if they want to. Later in the show would work too though.

Episode 38 — The Return of Suit McGoo

Apparently Beyonce has a song called 1+1. I can only assume that it's MATH ROCK! A&B? ... Arithm(atic) & Blues .. Math Dance?
  8. Wonderful. You guys might boost math rock out of obscurity if you can keep this meme up! (either that or you'll convince some people that 7-4=8 )

Episode 38 — The Return of Suit McGoo

Hey Caroline. Maybe a bigger indie fan can break it down better, but my understanding regarding twee vs. baroque is that twee refers more to the vocal style and lyrics, and baroque refers more to the instrumentation (horns, flutes, strings, etc) and overall tone (a little more serious than twee). I also think twee is less defined and sometimes used pejoratively.?.. There's a lot of overlap between the two though. . Also, apologies in advance if this music sidetracking continues here. Maybe the music nitpickers need their own thread for ongoing bitching about musical descriptions

Episode 38 — The Return of Suit McGoo

Haha, I'm glad my music geek nitpickery provided plenty of comedic fodder. The math rock song was dope. BTW I don't even like Battles; I'm just a genre nazi after having worked in college radio for like 10 years and having to organize a massive music library (feel free to drop me a line if anyone needs help telling brostep from clownstep). . And PFT never disappoints! Great episode

    For Howie and Kulap

Scott Aukerman, Adele, comic books, ...?
  12. Yeah, that's like the 2nd time that they've tried and failed to explain what math rock is. I'm surprised none of the guests never know what it is either though. Is it really that obscure? . You kind of have the aesthetic part down: angular, choppy, dissonant or abrasive at times, but it makes more sense if you explain it from the structural/compositional aspect because that's where the "math" label came from - either playing in odd time signatures, switching time signatures, or layering instruments that are playing in time signatures different from each other.

How can we improve the Earwolf.com forums?

Post Preview button next to the Send Post button. Also, by the BBcode hints below, a link to a page with more syntax help would be good. I've seen embedded youtube and images here, but they're not listed in the BBcode markup.?..

    Feedback for Brett Hammell

Hey Brett, Sounds like you're already wrapping your head around how to deal with structural problems. Your show is already pretty polished, so getting those finishing touches will probably make for something very professional. As for the other critique of your comedic topics/content, I do agree with the judges too though. But since they are all in the Comedy biz professionally, I think they pay much more attention to comedic decisions and end up with a lot of comedy-based pet peeves. I don't think it's as big a problem for most listeners, but it's still a valid critique. For example, when you introduce "hack comedy" ironically or as a joke, unless that's obvious up front, by the time the listener realizes that you're not serious, they already have a bad taste in their mouth that's not 100% removed just by pulling back the curtain. Emotions tend to stick around for a while, so when someone is irritated, even when they understand "Oh, that wasn't supposed to irritate me," they've already entered an irritated state, and their psyche finds something else to focus the irritation on. So the listener might think, "Oh, I get it now, he's making fun of hack comedy.... But the punchline wasn't worth those 40 seconds of being annoyed." Whereas if it was framed or set up differently, they might not have been annoyed from the beginning. Or make Matt Besser happy and don't make fun of other comedy period I think the best way to combat those comedic/topical problems is to either collaborate with another smart friend, or at least find someone to run your ideas by (after writing, before recording). When I work creatively, I always try to do this because I'll inevitably get sucked into one aspect of my work, and when I show it to a friend, they'll make good points about other aspects that I had completely overlooked. Different points resonate with different people so it always helps to have more minds to tap. Anyways, I say all of this because I think you have a great program, and something worth perfecting! I hope you find this all constructive. Good luck!

  16. I like when Marc goes on "frivolous" podcasts that force him to lighten up for a change - he's always a great sport about it. Good show as always! Regarding Lady Gaga hogging the bonus chart - she was one of the vocal advocates encouraging foreign tourism to return to Japan after the nuclear plant debacle. Americans have been pretty level headed throughout, but some European countries are still recommending zero travel to the entire country, which is hurting both tourism and international business relations/partnerships for Japan. So amidst a lot of worry about the nation's future, Japan has latched onto hope anywhere they can find it, whether it be Lady Gaga, or more recently the womens soccer team. As much as I don't give a crap about Gaga's music, it's nice to have pop star who, underneath the make-up, looks to be a genuinely intelligent, socially conscious, and well rounded person.

    I tried. I can't do it.

To each his own. I know a lot of comedy fans have refined and often specific tastes and I can see why people might not like Who Charted. I love it because of the way guests often end up sharing interesting, personal stuff out of sheer confusion at what is being asked of them. Howard is kinda fishing for jokes via stream of consciousness, but sometimes it's not even jokes, his mind just seems to be exploring weird random places just to make conversation. It's all gray area, and the guests not knowing what are jokes and what aren't is what makes it funny, and is also what Kulap is really good at picking up on and pointing out. Kulap is a great positive well-grounded counter to Howard's ramblings.

Episode 31 — Dragon Boy Suede and Oates

Winna, winna, chicken dinnaaa! Side note: As a long time college radio DJ, our station (and most any college stations that gets label promos) always submitted our charts to CMJ. Dusted Magazine is great, but their list of stations is somewhat small and hand-picked according to their tastes. And while their taste is no doubt very good (one of my former college radio colleagues is a reviewer there), for a more accurate or broad look at American college stations/charts, CMJ has a lot more stations to build their charts from: http://www.cmj.com Probably mostly the same stuff on both, but you might try CMJ if you revisit college charts (it was a nice break from all the pop stuff). See ya next week!

    Episode 112 - Since You've Been Gone

PFT was so on the ball, and Al was a great counterpart! Don't Fry For Me Marge & Tina = brilliant!!
  22. Missed this one until just hearing it on the show. Superbly executed! Do you have any band/other recordings in the same style?

Episode 30 — I Heal With My Steel

Kindler can do no wrong! I was trying so hard not to bust out laughing on my train commute this morning. Great show, as always!
  24. 2nd attempt. I almost didn't post this one since the humor is so subtle/dark. It's basically Scott and Harris arguing over some dark synth music. But someone might get a kick out of this: http://soundcloud.com/3chroma/lets-get-depressed-yall I have some ideas for new ones that I hope I can get to soon. These are fun, and easy to knock out real quick.

    Let's Get Depressed Y'all

Ha. Yeah it does, but it probably shouldn't. I'm just too lazy to master it properly, so I compressed the crap out of it and made a nice fat crayon.
