  1. I thought Atomic Blonde was pretty terrible. I'm pretty sure the script was written by a horny 14-year-old that was just like, "Yeah, fight! Now kiss! Now boobies! Now more fight!"

Have you seen John Wick (2014) ???

What would you change in Atomic Blonde to make it good/better/great ???

  2. just back from Atomic Blonde. It's ok. abit slow in places but once it kicks off it's very good. Charlize's accent isn't great (when it's there) but other than that she's amazing. the fight scenes are nuts. and i love when James McEvoy plays crazy! worth a watch but don't sit in the front row.... i got there late

I liked it as well but I figured out the twist about halfway through the film which was kind of a letdown. Didn't realize it was based on a comic or that it was set at the end of the Cold War so that was a nice change of pace from what I was expecting although I felt they muddled up the middle only to try and conceal the twist and make it to a 2hr run time.

Saw it Saturday and liked it a lot... One scene that I did not get was the "ride from the airport" and how it fits at the end... Also "NEEDS MORE Til Schweiger!!" Other than that, It was a great movie and the soundtrack was epic.

  3. My notes...

    * The names of bands in this movie (Figs 'n' Dates, Ballad & Romance) made me want to start a band named "Netflix and Chill"

    * Just before the club owner guy opens the door discovers the mermaid sisters in the dressing room in the wall a the left of/outside the door there are a LOT of posters for the Trio Band "Figs 'n' Dates" (Older Lady, Bassist, Drummer) Now that I know that the movie is set in the '80 my guess is that some of those posters can be as old as 10/15 years (so late '60 early '70. Its not a NEW band) One theory I had is that after the Mermaids came out of the water with the help of the two men in the band, The washed out band (Figs 'n' Dates) got back in the music game with a steady gig at the night club. This is supported by the fact that the patrons and staff of said nightclub (exept maybe the owner) are almost (unconsciously? uncontrolablly? maybe?) choreographed dancing to the beat of the mermaid song or to the "NEW" sound of "F&D" The other part of the theory is that they where struggling hard, they were homeless, heating their sausages/food out of trashcan fires and being street musicians by the shore... And they teamed up with the mermaid sisters for their second shot at fame (Something told me that they where BIG big some time ago, then went away and were forgotten. I cant believe they were consistently/constantly famous for over a decade just by doing nightclub gigs) ... That was my theory

    * If the band Aqua had a dissclaimer for the "Barbie Girl" song saying that it was not about the Mattel doll, does the scene where the drummer shows the mermaids naked to the owner need a disclaimer as well or it gets a pass because is "a joke"???

    * In the photo shoot scene (where the mermaids had bunny ears) all I could think of was the centerfold for that issue would surely be twice or even 3 times longer than a standard one and would be a hassle to fold in and out ;)

    * This movie is from Janus Films (La Jetee, The Red Balloon amongst many MANY other classics) I went to their website and found this...

    https://s3.amazonaws...17_original.pdf

    * A while ago I saw a Pro-Envirnment/action/Rom-Com from China called "The Mermaid/Mei ren yu" (2016)

I liked it a LOT its from Stephen Chow, the same guy who directed "Kung Fu Hustle" (2004) and since we are in the suject of mermaids I figured it was a good time to recomend it. Here is the trailer...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Qfwwlo4bw

    * My favourite cameo/underused character was the (main?) female cook Mrs. Rockets... I would not mind seeing a movie about her story with her as the main character

P.S.: Other notes that I had were similar to what was written in the 7 pages before so I did not post them, but I liked a bunch of your posts :D

  4. Sorry, y'all! Yesterday ended up being busier than I had thought it would be, so I'm just getting a chance to give my take.

I also really the movie thematically. Smoczynska has said that she views the mermaids as standing in for (among other things) immigrants. But surely they can represent any exploited group. When the mermaids show up on the beach, everyone's first thought is how to make money off of them. No one (not even Mietek) makes any attempt to humanize them or treat them as anything other than something to exploit - either financially or sexually.

So the sisters are left with the choice of either humanizing/integrating themselves like Silver tries to do or just not really giving a shit and continuing to do their own thing like Golden does. Silver sacrifices her tail, her voice, and ultimately herself to try to fit into this society where no one has really welcomed her. Even the guy that supposedly loves her tells her that she's just an animal in his eyes.

But Golden just keeps doing her thing. She doesn't try to change into anything different just to appease the people who are exploiting her. And in the end, that's why she survives. I think it's important that she killed Mietek in the end - not as a way of avenging her sister - but as a way of taking control over the people who have been taking advantage of the sisters for the entire movie.

If I remember correctly Triton first tells Golden that if someone fall in love with a human (Bobo Peter in this case) and that human marries someone else if the mermaid in question does not eat him then she would become foam and die. At first I thought/felt there was like a Love triangle brewing between the 2 sisters and the bass player (I first noticed it at the end of the clothes store shopping spree song) Like he choose Silver and Golden got jealous and started to try to make them, break up (both for her sel"fish"ness and to look out for her sister) But my theory was that Golden was (a little bit) in love with bass dude as well, so at the end it was a revenge for Silver's bubbly demise and to save herself (Again, that was the theory I had in my head as I watched... The minority/immigrants/foreign angle works better)

Okay I finally got to watch it. I expected more man eating.

I counted 4 men eaten and one thumb (One in the car, two in the bank, and Bass Guy, and the thumb of older man drummer) My version was 1hour32mins there was another version wich I did not see that was 1hour28mins (It could be a 4min cut or a NTSC/PAL time difference)

Okay here's my actual take on the movie now that I've had some time to sit on it.

It was both exactly what I expected and not at all what I expected at the same time. I think I would have liked it more if it didn't rely on the Little Mermaid story so much like others have mentioned. I really expected it to be this slasher musical flick that had a ton of girls eating flesh (has anyone seen Raw yet? I've heard that is amazing) and hiding the fact that they are actually monsters using their music to lure victims. But really we only see like three instances of murder with little pay off and that felt really disappointing. I didn't give a SHIT about Silver's love for Bobo!Bieber and I really just wanted murder.

I saw Raw It's a must see... (I won't go into details so you go in as clean as possible)

I was busy trying to think up names for that body part.

    Fingina maybe?

Did anybody think that the Drumer and Club Owner Guy made a "joke" about the Fingina smelling like fish at the end of that scene??? Because the scene after the title the owner goes around the backstage, the kitchen, the dressing rooms pretty pissed off about the smell but then when he is shown that they are mermaids and sees their Finginas he shrugs it off and says he does not mind?

  5. Hey, here's something I meant to do at the end of the last thread: not sure if anyone's interested in doing this, or if it will hurt people's feelings (probably not....)...

Since we're now into round 2 of MM, I thought we might like to rank, based on our own personal enjoyment, all of the MM films in the first round. Aside from the blanket truth that Across the Universe is everyone's number 1, how do you rank them? (you can obviously exclude ones you didn't get to see).

    1. That Thing You Do!

    2. The Phantom of the Paradise (Close CLOSE second place)

    3. An American Tail

    4. Pete's Dragon

    5. Repo! The Genetic Opera

    6. High School Musical

P.S.: I finished "The Lure" but I still need some time to "polish" ( ;) #NotSorryNEVERSORRY ) my handfull of notes...

Will be posting in the next hour...

    HAPPY VACATION CINCO!!!

  6. I couldn't watch The Lure last night because of 3 things...

    1. I fell asleep

    2. I woke up at 3am and "got" up to date with G.o.T. :) #notsorry

(And most importantly...) 3. I watched Cameron H.'s best film of the year "Monster-ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE-Trucks" (Yes I said it!)

THIS IS NOT A JOKE #100realandtrue

Cameron H. let me publicly say to you that I'm deeply sorry if any of my thoughts, actions, and previous posts seemed to convey that I was a "Monster Trucks" NON believer that was just a nasty side-effect from the UNFAIR review cicle this EPIC GEM recieved in the media and Internet (PLUS I had not seen it yet)... I wish to be one with the underground lake creatures

You are redeemed and all of those who have doubted the quality of M.T. simply are not working on the highest ( or lowest if you are a lake creature ;) ) level of consciousness and spiritual enlightenment you get from witnessing the greatness of this Film

All of that said, I still don't feel 100% worthy... I'm getting there, the problem is I'm not brave enough to say or write that "Monster Trucks is the best film of the year" (both 2016 and 2017 'cuz it premiered on/after Christmas 2016 in France, UK, Ireland and Malaysia... 4 Lucky countries) Much like Barry Pepper's policeman character, the truth is in front of me (Like you told the world, I saw it in the film) but I have to work some personal stuff out in order to bond with my adoptive son Tripp (Lucas Till, who you confessed was your REAL identity) And WE know what happened with their relationship at the end of the movie :D

I've decided that my punishment for my lack of "Monster Truck" courage is to spread the word about it (Much like you Cameron H.) and watch it a bunch

    tl;dr... I 100% UN-Ironically LOVED/LOVE "Monster Trucks" Thank You Cameron H.

P.S. : Pressing play on "The Lure" Now BRB

  7. I've been watching GOT on HBO Now and have been disappointed with pretty much every episode since they outpaced the books. The plotting is a mess. I'm committed to seeing the series through, like a bad mystery novel

I binged seasons 1-5 and have seen seasons 6 and 7 live as they air...I see your "the plot is a mess" point, IMHO (Without reading the books) I think they have stuck to the show's formula and double down with "If it aint broke dont fix it" My fear is that nothing really major MAJOR happens this season and ithey will really start tying the loose ends next season

  8. Have any of you seen stolen or criminal? Any good?

    Hello again Paul...

I've just watched Criminal and fully recommend it for the HDTGM treatment

This is pure Kevin Costner HARD R unhinged action crazyness from the same 2 writers of "The Rock" (Was Nic cage up for this role at some point?) I don't even want to say anything about the movie 'cuz I went blind into it and liked it a lot for what it tried to be and for what it ended being

It's a dumb premisse sure, but I think it was a fun one after giving it a look...

P.S.: Fun little Criminal drinking game... Drink/Take a shot when you hear any of these... Dutchman, Jerico, Russians and Wormhole

  9. Also I'm telling Avaryl about Queen of the Damned. Have any of you seen stolen or criminal? Any good?

    Hello Paul!

    I've just finished "Stolen"...

I'ts a mish-mash of action tropes and little bits taken from other movies like: "Heat" "Blue Streak" "Taken" "The Call" A line about being shot in the stomach from "Reservoir Dogs/Kill Bill" and a "Friday 13th" jumpscare

Not too crazy or funny just somewhat forgettable 'cuz we've seen most of it before (A surveillance scene at the end did craked me up)

TBH I was surprised that it was the same director from the HDTGM Nic Cage Classic "Con-Air"

IMHO I know we have a "movie picks" pile at this point, but for a better and crazier Nic Cage movie set on New Orleans (Stolen only features Goody 2 Shoes Bank Robber Cage who gets spooked and runs all over the place) the better choice is "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" (And I'm almost sure you and Jason have talked about on past episodes)

I'm currently watching "Criminal"... I'll report back when I'm done

  10. Power Rangers was better than Monster Trucks

Almost every review of "Power Rangers" (2017) I saw online said that the battle scene at the end needed to be longer or that the movie needed MORE morphed Power Rangers in fights and not just at the end but I disliked the end scene b/c TOO MUCH CGI but loved the other parts of the movie.

Forget cats, give me funny and cute bear gifs and pictures anytime.
