I'm happy I got to watch this oeuvre also. The cold open and opening scenes are so great. Even the girl water-skiing is being tormented - she cries "can't we stop now!" I also thought the man was a transvestite and didn't check the credits so had some thought that was a thing in the movie. Like maybe the father survived, became a cross-dresser and that figured into the plot. The whole plot was devised by some pretty dumb and hateful people it seems though, which makes it a bit difficult to watch at times. The rooftop water-balloon fight is on a par with the football game in The Room...

Episode 47 — Super Mario Bros: LIVE
Ghost of HST replied to admin's topic in How Did This Get Made?
So glad to watch this again and hear the commentary...I was never into the game but was very into stuff like magic mushrooms, Terence McKenna and Whitley Streiber when I saw this for the first time so I thought the movie was trying to channel those ideas. I don't think David Icke was popular yet but there was already a lot about reptillian aliens and, of course, hollow earth "theories". -
With Dave Anthony hosting the whole thing?!

Episode 2 — The World of Cinema

I'm really enjoying this podcast also. I have fond memories of Over the Edge...it really captured late-70s suburban teenage boredom - as I remember anyhow. Need to watch it again to see how it stands up. I always wondered if this Wipers song was based on/influenced by the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ6B96NyaJ4&feature=related -
Agreed. But is it canon?

Paul: was the "seeing the past through the eyes of a dead man's disembodied head" in last week's NTSF:SUV:SD:: a hat tip to WWW or just strange coincidance??
-
Truly so much WTFery in this one. It seems like Caine isn't even wet when he gets on the boat after, also, miraculously surviving being eaten by the shark also...Not to get too nerdy but is interesting to see how June and Paul have fun trying to make sense of the absurdity, which I think I reflects in NTSF:SUV:SD:: to some degree...Did y'all see the hat tip to WWW in last week's episode??

Points for having the Patron Saintess of HTFDTGM? Mais, oui... I was fan of the old tv show as a young kid and even got well into Bah Bah Black Sheep...Conrad was certainly never as '70s uber-cool as James Garner but they certainly should have involved in the movie. So Will Smith's apology was quite valid. Anyhow, looking for some interviews with Conrad, I found this one from Cinefantastique - a kind of glossy fanzine where he freely speaks his mind: Conrad was great in his Columbo episode also...

Great take on the Judoka doping! I agree with both sides of the ridiculousness of pot being a performance enhancing drug. He probably used it to come down and relax after a good work out, so that could possibly work out as an advantage...But also I see Dan's point in that, hey, c'mon, you know the rules because this is what you dedicate your life to...

Agreed - great episode. I too listen to podcasts while working out and this one made time fly. Love this pic:

Really could not agree more so that's why I'm wasting a post to quote it...I thought it was fine comedic skewering of some the sick hypocrisy of the Catholic church. It's not so much that people are unaware but rather that it gets explained away or people make excuses for it. You don't even have to go into conspiracy theories to find out about the influence, power and wealth of the Catholic church.

I have never seen the first two Spiderman movies either but you can see flashes of how much Raimi gets the comic book aesthetic but was certainly bogged down by a lot of extra crap here. Watch Darkman if you have never seen it - it really captures the feel of comics and, given the budget and 1990-era SFX, it is quite entertaining.

Love those master class vids but they're so...META! I thought Matt Besser hated meta...Time for a meta debate? I mean, it's not even a real word - it's a prefix! Meta-what? Meta World Peace? Seriously though, great, great show as always.

Saw this in Mexico City when it came out. Movies were only 1-2 USD and I saw 3 - 4 a week and never walked out of anything. After this one was over and I was trying to digest what the crap it was "really" about, I came across the fasting protest of a uniformed police officer. He had gone up into a tree to hang himself and others were trying to get him down. If I remember correctly, he was protesting police corruption and having to come up with a minimum amount of bribes to kick upstairs at the precinct...Unfortunately, I don't have my journal with me detailing the post-modern rupture between the Dredd movie and the cold hard reality...fueled by Mexican sativa, no doubt...Looking forward to watching it again actually.

Watched Godzilla on this lazy summer saturday afternoon with popcorn and everything in a feeble attempt to recapture watching all those old original ones on tv...Godzilla vs the Smog Monster anyone? Professor Procrastination nailed it above: Godzilla the misunderstood teenager becomes misunderstood mama? I dunno though, maybe those old ones had plot holes big enough for Godzilla to jump through and ridiculous hackneyed dialog...Try offsetting the dialog a few seconds so it seems like it is poorly dubbed..."Mon dieu! You call thees coffee! Sacre bleu!!"

Indeed. Anarchy does not mean chaos but rather the absence of hierarchies. And: Great Show!

Great show...Loving the double weekly shot of Sklar mania... I think the Red Man cribs thing was mentioned on both. It is the only Cribs episode that should be allowed to exist. Has me in tears every time... http://forbezdvd.com/cod.php?v=MTI1OTQ

Episode 37 — Speed 2: Cruise Control
Ghost of HST replied to admin's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Yeah, that finale needed some Benny Hill music...You guys really nailed all the WTFery of this flick...Loved the post above on the villain's bizarre motives. He's going to die soon so he needs millions in diamonds? They showed that he had a ton of vitamins/drugs so he had enough money, or managed to stay on insurance, to take care of himself...I dunno, are leeches expensive? -
Based on: Matt Besser's 90's 'fro!
-
HA! Made semi-watching that stinking pile of shit poo bearable! Ike seems very dedicated to the cause of crap cinema so he would make a great fill-in any time someone is otherwise occupied. So, just, great episode!
-
I dunno - you guys may have made a mistake. This film features the acting talent of Sloane from Entourage...If she is only half as great in this one then she can probably make the whole thing very swell.
