Knowing that this is possibly subtle and subversive makes me want to see it all the more now.

Man, I got some serious name check in this mini. I even got credit for a correction that I don't think I made. I wonder what movies they'll be doing for a live episode. I suspect it's either going to be Fast 7 or Dreamcatcher.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Really? I always think he's the Jar Jar of Crystal Skull. It's like Lucas and Spielberg maybe watched Rebel Without A Cause once and used that caricature of a greaser for Mutt Williams. It's super clunky the way he rides a bike, the way he flashes his switchblade, etc. none of it works and comes off really awkward. I think they planned on doing some Mutt Williams spinoffs but I am so glad that it did not work out that way. -

We went from Charlie Sheen to Shia LeBeouf. I want to know who decided that LeBeouf was leading man material. Clearly that decision didn't pan out well and the biggest loser in the whole thing is Shia himself (aside from the people who paid money to see Crystal Skull), but there was a long stretch when he was being forced into the badass hero role that he clearly did not belong. -

I am surprised there is no thread on this too. I searched "gekko" "douglas" "lebeouf" and found nothing of it. I remember from the trailer there was a line where Gekko says "I once said greed is good, it now appears that it is legal." I suspect that Stone made this movie because the original Gekko unintentionally became a hero and he was trying to use the hero status to repivot Gekko to align with his own views. -
I'm hoping that this one is the one where most of the audience goes "Ok, we get the joke, let's move on." However, I doubt that the ratings will get so low that they'll stop making them.

I always thought that Entourage was fairly well regarded, but I have only really started to hear negative takes on it recently. Maybe it's a thing that had its time, but does not hold up well like Ed Hardy t-shirts. I would be curious to hear from marginal Entourage fans (meaning people who liked it but are not fanboys) to hear if they think it's good or not. Still, that AV Club article is pretty funny.

I kind of want to see this, it looks like the fake film in Gentlemen Broncos and I have a soft spot for grand space operas. (I'm just putting this out there for discussion)

Duh, she needs it for the FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR GOLD PLATED TELESCOPE so she can see Jupiter in the light polluted city of Chicago. What else do you expect her to do, save her toilet scrubbing wages for the $200 Walmart telescope or scour Craigslist for a used one? Nope, not a completely nonsensical plot device at all.

I have been rethinking Stephen King quite a bit lately. This had been brewing in the background for a while, especially after having rewatched Children of the Corn and Christine within the past couple of years and not having them hold up, but what really kicked this off was that I watched Dreamcatcher, and then I watched the miniseries The Stand. We all acknowledge that Dreamcatcher is bad, but The Stand is generally regarded as a good miniseries coming from a good book, however it's essentially Left Behind from a horror author minus Kirk Cameron. Honestly, the dialog is really cheesy, there is a strong Christian overtone to it, and it's overall just not good. When I look back, there are a lot of terrible King adaptations, but there are also a few really really good ones. It has me wondering if King is good at broad ideas and bad with execution (especially dialog) and that the farther the adaptation strays from the original the more potential it has for greatness.

Maybe so he'll never forget how to get where he's going? And what about the owl guy? Why does he need to be an owl? It is more arbitrary than the animal hybrids in Dr. Moreau.

And yet it ends up being so derivative of so many things...

I genuinely love the Bobby Brown jam from this film

I actually like that it ends ambiguously, open for you to decide whether it was a murder or was for show. I also enjoy this movie, it may not make sense, but it is beautifully shot and Kidman looks amazing. I also probably am not objective because I am a Kubrick fanboy...

There's also Stinger Apini, and guess what the scientific name for honey bees is? Apparently our ancient alien ancestors are really into the Latin earth names for things.

On a tangential note, has anyone seen Sens8 yet? I know that it's by the Wachowskis are involved in it, but I don't think it involves any whispering about harvesting, animal human hybrid romances or bees telling it like it is. I'm just wondering if it's any good.

That would 100% explain this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1cDXj8FpyM

My theory on Redmayne is that he started off doing a standard villain and the Wachowskis wanted him to do it more Voldemorty so he Voldemorted the shit out of Balem. BTW, I keep wanting to call him Beeblebrox. Don't the names sound like rejected Hitchhiker's Guide characters? In fact if he really wanted to destroy earth because it was in the way of a highway it would have made much more sense.

I like to think that he's a cross between Marty McFly from BTTF2 and Scotty Howard from Teen Wolf

Personally I liked Cloud Atlas, but I have heard very polar opinions on it. People seem to either really like it or really dislike it. I think that the fact that they collaborated with Tom Tykwer helped the film out a lot. However I think the movie flopped hard. I do wonder how The Wachowskis and M. Night Shyamalan keep getting funded for new movies. I get how Michael Bay keeps getting money to make films, he has yet to have a flop, but how much money have the Wachowskis and Shyamalan lost for the studios? At minimum if you have a huge flop you should be forced to regroup and work within a budget.

When people asked about what I did over the weekend and I told them I watched Jupiter Ascending and when I described it I said it was like a fake movie that someone would write to make fun of sci-fi, except that it was in earnest.

Lost World is bad in a tedious way, III is bad in a fun way. I always say III is just Gremlins and that is much better than whatever Lost World is.
