This would be better for James Lipton's version of HDTGM

I really enjoy Revolver. I liked it when I first saw it a couple of years ago, and I liked it again when I watched it last night.
-
Yeah, I get that it's why they chose him, but it makes for a boring character. I'm sure that Seal Team Six members are leagues more complex than that portrayal of Captain America.

The character of Captain America was soooooo 1-dimensional. He was never scared, even when he was a little guy and always motivated to do the right thing. It was so boring to see him get into a tense situation and not see the most remote glint of human emotion show through.

Top 10 reasons why High Fidelity is not the kind of movie that would work on HDTGM...

How much of it do you think is just that it's "dated" and how much is 'cause it's not a good movie?
Â
Probably 5 years ago I got a special edition of it and was excited for it 'cause I had fond memories of it from childhood, but when i watched it I was greatly disappointed. That said, I enjoy Willow as an adult, but I think that unlike Legend, there is at least some comedy in it (albeit a lot of it is fairly lowbrow).

I guess that's just where we differ. I don't take rape lightly at all, but felt like that scene was so cartoonish that it didn't seem real at all. However, I can see only being familiar with it via the TV edit version and not see that coming.

I would hardly call this movie a mistake. I think Herzog knew exactly what he was doing when he chose Cage for this movie and got exactly what he wanted. Seriously, go watch some of Herzog's movies with Klaus Kinski (especially Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo, and then for extra effect watch Klaus Kinski Is My Best Friend to get a feel for how nuts Kinski was)
-
I love this movie. The "Thinly Veiled Kenny G" gang rape scene is one of the best examples of unintentional comedy I have ever seen.

I would say that the only way that they should do this movie would be with Werner Herzog as guest and do it with as much respect and adulation as possible. This man made some amazing films (Aguirre is one of my all time favorites) and since the majority opinion of this movie is positive, it would seem out of place to rip it to shreds and question its existence.
Â
If you have seen Herzog films other than this and Grizzly Man you'll recognize that Herzog has a tendency to make films where the main character is or is going nuts. In this sense, this movie is perfectly in line with his other films.

When I saw the title of this thread I was thinking of "Vibes" with Cindi Lauper and Jeff Goldblum who play psychics searching for lost treasure in South America:

So is Nic Cage America's answer to Klaus Kinski?

I think I remember seeing a bit of it in the Poison episode of "Behind the Music", as part of the "But now he's got his shit back together, and this is what he's doing now" segment, where they show that after conquering drugs and alcohol/bankruptcy/near death experiences/whatever, our favorite musicians are BACK, and they're doing....awful, terrible things that will further alienate their fanbase.
Â
Bret Michaels is actually originally from around where I live, and he was playing at the local Days Inn a week or two before "Rock of Love" debuted. Yeah, he hasn't been back around in a while...
Â
I think that they were showing the making of "A Letter From Death Row" which also features those Sheens and has a lower rating on IMDB. I got a copy of it in the Wal Mart cheapo bin a while ago.

I like to think of this movie as "A Day in the Life of Nic Cage"

PWSA has some good movies to choose from: Three Musketeers, the Resident Evil series, Death Race.
-
This movie was not screened for critics. I wonder how many wide release movies don't get screened to critics and end up with a positive rating on RT.
-
I don't think a bigger budget would have saved it. The plot was somehow both obvious and nonsensical and money wasn't the problem with Nick Cage's performance. That said, this movie is only really worth watching for Cage, once his character is no longer in the picture you're left seeing if it wraps up as predictably as you think it's going to.
-
I started to watch this movie last night and hoooooooly crap is Cage's performance weird.

So with this movie, they have done 3 out of the 5 nominees for the worst movie at the 1998 Razzies. The nominees were:
The Postman (won)
Anaconda
Batman & Robin
Fire Down Below
Speed 2

Besson only wrote and produced it, he didn't direct it.

It has been a long time since I saw this movie, but it has a 5.4 on imdb and due to the Wild Wild West episode, I thin you could get some more good Jon Peters material out of it due to this factoid:
Â
Robert Blake claims that his first meeting with producer Jon Peters consisted of Peters wrestling Blake to the ground. At the premiere, Blake said Peters told him he wrestled with Blake to see if Blake would lose his temper -
Just for the record, this is available on youtube with Thai subtitles:

The dialog in Mamet movies always comes off more like play dialog than movie dialog. Even the amazing Glengary Glen Ross has its more play-like moments.

I didn't think it was bad, I think that it was an attempt at showing the view from inside one of the personalities. I think that they should do the one ripped from the bad movie idea in Adaptation: Thr3e
