  1. I just watched Maximum Risk. In the grand scheme of JCVD films it was easily one of the more coherent and more enjoyable films. However, he played a cop that discovered he was a separated at birth twin and made me want to bump the Double Impact thread.

It also had me thinking, how many times has JCVD essentially done a movie with very similar themes more than once? Global kickboxing tournament? Cyborgs? Separated At Birth Twins?

  2. I actually can't chime in with the BSG portion cause I've still not watched it yet... (Don't worry my BFF yells at me every time she is reminded of this)

I know the show has its fanatics, but I thought the first season of BSG was very good, but it got pretty bad by the 3rd season. The 4th was an improvement from the 3rd, but still not anywhere near the 1st.

  3. Cersei is one of my least favorite characters so I'm really hoping for some good pay-off.

I couldn't agree more with that. Everyone that has faith is viewed as completely crazy and wrong. Even the ones with The Hound were made to seem wrong because their passive life doesn't work.

Funny, while I agree that the religious people mostly seem like zealots on GoT, I feel that the belief systems are a lot more fleshed out than in BSG. I always thought BSG's religion seemed clunky, maybe it was the fact that they took an ancient belief system and just used it in a futuristic context.

I imagine that writing realistic behavior within a belief system that you personally do not believe (be it invented or real world) in is probably one of the more difficult things in fiction writing. I usually find Stephen King's attempts at writing religious characters to be pretty blatant examples of clumsy writing for a belief system that the author doesn't hold.

  4. I so much wanted to like this movie yet got let down quickly. I watched it twice because I didn't think i got it at first but then after the second viewing it still didn't make sense.

Unlike the High Rise that is great. You should check that one out,

I watched "A Field In England" a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it (but I can see why it got a negative reaction), so since this is by the same director I will add it to my list.

  5. Whoa, I totally got Auked. I have been too busy to be active here and finished watching Dragonheart last night (even teared up a bit at the end even though it really is not a terribly good movie) and then saw they did different movie. The good news is that it looks like Boy Next Door might be coming to HBO Go pretty soon. I see it listed as playing on HBO on Wednesday, so if you want to watch it and have HBO you can probably wait a bit.

  6. I haven't seen the show, but is it really about the Cold War as a whole? Like, I know that's the setting, and I think Felicity and the other dude are supposed to be Soviet spies, but I assumed it was more of a character drama than a historical drama.

I think though a big part of it is that they are trying to get you to have an emotional investment in (and to some degree root for) these Soviets. Not in the sense that the producers trying to push a pro-communist agenda or anything, just as an ultimate anti-hero.

  7. I had seen Solarbabies before, but after having seen The Apple for the first time I enjoyed the Apple-esque twist near the end. I was just disappointed that Bodi (whom I kept wanting to manifest in a humanoid form as Patrick Swayze) didn't take them all to a new planet to start all over.

  8. You know, I noticed the "meow" in Bloodsport when I watched it too, even to the point of occasionally pausing the movie to make sure that neither of my cats was trapped in a room and trying to get out. I eventually came to the conclusion that it was something like a Vuvuzela, but regional to south Asia. I could be wrong though.
