  1. Dora and Kai-lan are pretty basic Nick Jr. kids' shows with a little bit of language / culture thrown in. My kids are learning Spanish words from Dora, and some of the books describe some Mexican foods or holiday traditions in a pretty "simplified for pre-schoolers" way.

The one thing I noticed - which I'm sure was a decision made in some Nickelodeon board room - is that Dora herself has WAY lighter skin than anyone in her family (who are rarely featured). Now, I guess it could have been that they had Dora first and later someone said "she needs a family - let's make them actually look Mexican for once," but it's definitely a thing.

  2. PFT is also on Go Bayside! this week for anyone who isn't already subscribed to that as well. More Paul F. than you can shake a suit at!

    Β

I subscribed to Go Bayside after April guested on Whooch. Started with Howard Kremer's episodes and have been rolling along since then. It's amazing how much Saved by the Bell I remember considering I always hated it.

Also, thank you for so much PFT off-mic pre-intro laughter!

  3. Small-town Wisconsin! It's where

    - young people don't think racism exists because they've never been anywhere that people of other races exist

    - there's only one black kid and he's so good at sports that people go "we aren't racist; we LOVE our star running back!"

    - Baby boomers still talk about the "race riots" as if Milwaukee has been a non-stop war zone for the last 40 years

    - plenty of folks who don't have any hate in their heart still treat anyone non-white/non-Christian/non-straight as alien

    Β

Or did I just describe everywhere? I've only ever lived in Wisconsin myself so I'm sure my own point of view isn't terribly enlightened or deep.

  4. I can agree with the passive aggressive targeting, but can we also all agree that a middle school or high school should be enforcing the most minimal of dress code such that no one's butt is visible? Do our schools have so many problems that no one can even be bothered to tell kids that clothes need to cover their butt?

  5. On another note, Questlove is like the depressed musician's best friend. He goes to D'Angelo to try to get him to make music, and then goes to Fiona Apple to try to get her out of her funk. He needs to pay a visit to Jay Electronica, because Drake sort of took the spot that he supposed to be in, imho.

It would be pretty awesome if Questlove took a year to roam the country and help motivate talented musicians.

  6. If you're flying in instead of driving cross-country, plenty of the Midwest cities are actually packed pretty close together: Chicago to Milwaukee to Madison to Twin Cities to Des Moines to St. Louis to Louisville to Indianapolis to Cincinnati to Columbus to Cleveland to Detroit.
