  1. It's basically the Japanese 300. Then again, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is the American Civil War with vampires thrown in. Basically, there isn't a historical battle that someone doesn't think would be better if only there were some kind of supernatural element thrown in.

In fairness, I think taking it out was a big reason season 2 of True Detective sucked so hard

  2. Yes! Since when do doctors have badges that they can flash like they're FBI agents?

Kidman looks preposterously beautiful when she's slow-dancing with the silver fox guy at the ball? Truly fantastic lighting in that scene.

I love that guy's voice, too. "Let me show you my collection of....renaissance bronze"

  3. It's a great movie and there aren't really any holes in the logic of it, it's just kind of weird. I would love to hear Jason talk about how much he'd love to be in a society like that, but otherwise there isn't much for them to really riff on

  4.

    Kickboxer 3:

    - Now we're in Brazil, David Sloane is the world champion

    - As it turns out, there's an American down there, who is running a child sex and slavery ring

    - David and his trainer find out about this, and decide to investigate the situation

I'm trying to imagine that situation playing out in real life. Some guys go to Brazil for a martial arts championship, get wind of a child sex ring and then case the joint, then go in and beat up a huge syndicate one by one. I know I'm just repeating what you said, but it's just insane

  5. Come on guys, he was born in Arizona, and moved to Babylonia.

These two were dorking out so hard. I loved that exchange:

Ben: There is a chance one day that I may do a podcast. Maybe one day.

Scott: Oh man, god I hope you do it with us! That would be great!

    Ben: I hate you.

Scott: Come on, that would be the greatest.

Schwazz: You're the meanest. Don't even finish this. I was being sincere!

Scott: I'm being sincere. You know how you asked me what's one thing I'd like to acheive that I haven't done yet in my career? It's to have you do a podcast on the Earwolf network. And I didn't say it because I was scared! I was scared that you weren't going to want to do it, Ben!

Ben: I'm not going to do it guys, I'm back out and I'm never going to do it again

Scott: Ha ha ha! I knew it! You're a coward! Ha ha!

    Ben: King Tut

  6. Can anyone explain the powers? The more I think about it the more confused I become:

    - Olyphant got the clunky finger swirl power

    - Jane got the mind reading power that in 20 years he seems to be ignorant that he's getting sensitive info from people's heads

    - Lewis also seems to have gotten mind reading or some kind of resistance to mind control, or the power to turn guns into telephones

    - Did Jason Lee not get a power?

All I can say is, at least that part is supposed to be magic and mysterious. I thought Jane was tormented by the powers at first since he almost kills himself after using it in the beginning when he was making fun of his fat patient (WTF was that by the way???), but then later it seems like he has no idea he is a psychic. This can't be downplayed enough in this thread: this screen play was written by the guy who wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back, plus was nominated for two Oscars for writing The Big Chill and The Accidental Tourist.

  7. I know this whole thread is turning into just me talking to myself, but goddamn it this movie needs to get done. Anyways, they're rebooting it instead of making it into a TV show, so it's relevant enough again for me to bump this.

The dialogue in TLOEOG makes Conan in New York look like Pulp Fiction and what other movie has a 200 foot, nuclear powered submarine emerging from the Venice canals in the 1800s?

  8. I have always dreamed of being an evil businessman with a karate dojo. Preferably in the basement of my office building like in The Last Dragon, but using them to start petty fights with people and sicking my evil dojo on people would be great. I would also be fine with an evil youth league team that only plays in black uniforms, makes all sorts of cheap shots and illegally recruits kids from out of district.

  9. You used to be able to get a count of the number of people who listened/downloaded a particular episode by going to the specific episode page and looking in the corner of the ep. It was interesting to see which podcasts had more or less views and I always appreciated that they had it. I understand that people probably get these on iTunes as well and it underrepresented the count, but comparing was just kind of fun. It's too bad they got rid of it if that's what happened.

  10. I simply couldn't wait to talk/post about "Face / Off"...

So I just Re-watched "Face / Off" , a movie that I probably seen 10 times on T.V. but never really gave it a serious, deep, detailed analysis A.K.A. The HDTGM treatment ;) haha

    * I can't believe I did not noticed for 18 years but... Archer could of totally proved he was him with his fingerprints... Sorry Jason but someone dropped the ball while making this film and did not add the line that the fingerprints can also be swapped during the doctor's exposition.

Not only that, but what did prove it was his blood type. However, they transferred an organ (his face) to a new host with a different blood type. You can't do that! It would be rejected so fast. Also, when she takes the blood sample and analyzes it, that isn't how you do it.

  11. I must add to the general confusion about why Poe was on this federal prison transport plane since there is no reason why he would have been charged with a federal crime. Most crimes are illegal at both a federal and state level allowing for duel jurisdiction however, there must be a federal "hook". Generally this involves the use of interstate commerce in the commission of the crime or targeting a federal officer. So, the Oklahoma City bombing killed 168 people, but the federal case only had 11 deaths. Those were of federal agents who were killed.

I spent my first summer of law school interning for the federal prosecutor, and a large part of the job was trying to make sure that cases all had federal hooks. Drugs are easy, since drugs travel in interstate commerce. But crimes against persons are much harder. If this had been a murder for hire where Poe had used a computer or cell phone to arrange the deal, then you'd have something. But I can not think of any reason this would be a federal crime. Unless the rednecks turned out to be government agents.

The "you are a deadly weapon and so can't get self-defense" doesn't actually work in this context. However, self-defense laws often include an element involving retreat. Basically, if you can get away safely then you must so that. If you fail to retreat you do not get to use self-defense. This is the big issue with "Stand Your Ground Laws"; they eliminate the duty to retreat. I suppose a jury might reject the self-defense argument by saying that Cage could have retreated safely. I mean, not from what we say but who knows what the witnesses testified to on the stand.

You answered your own question - the federal government gave him the training that made him into a deadly weapon.
