Episode 254 — LIVE from Comedy Gives Back
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Comedy Bang Bang
Nice. I can part with $1. Ever since I've become broke, I tend to throw $1 at a bunch of Kickstarter projects instead of the usual 20 or 15 or something. I can do that Scott! -
Episode 106 — Rainbow Party Pitch
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
I'm so glad that Erin Whitehead mentioned that both those voices during the Man on the Street sounded like Eric I was playing video games while listening to this, so I wasn't totally focused, and I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING. lol. Excellent I4H, Matt! Fantastic group of UCB'ers that we haven't heard before on the show! Perhaps there's some here that may even land on the next Best Of....? Even if that doesn't happen (competition is always fierce when we're dealing with the greatest podcast in the universe), great ep! -
Episode 9 — Why Every Movie Plot Follows Weirdly Specific Rules
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Cracked Podcast
Well, first off, good point about the Obi-Wan/mentor character. You're right in that the way they explained it does apply to more movies in general. Second of all... I don't know if I remember that much from my classes I GRADUATED from college almost six years ago... so I must've taken it, gosh, in 2007? 2006? That doesn't sound right... but it's around there. I do remember learning that Hero's Journey as a sort of graph. You start with a big exciting event (like the Blockade Runner in front of the Star Destroyer), so you should have a large swell right off the bat. Than it settles down and slowly builds the world & action (from C3PO & Artoo walking around on Tatooine all the way up until Han and the group ESCAPE the Death Star), so there's a slow climb. The "All is Lost" Moment where everything just gets more and more hopeless... this causes the curve to take a steep dive (the setup for the Battle of Yavin/The Death Star Trench Run)... which is similar to the "uncanny valley" effect (something far more pertinent to game design, btw). And then you pull up for the big, flashy, crowd-pleasing "Snatch victory from the claws of Defeat!" type finale. But this is all basic, I feel like. I only remember a little bit more; stuff about a 3-act structure, for instance. But my teacher, who WAS for the Game Art major, did his best to apply it to our career. He was just working with, and adapting, content for another major. So what I learned, again, doesn't quite apply to screenwriting in general. I mean, it's a different timing/flow in a video game. I remember reading a few books on it, and picking up a book called, "The DC Comics Guide to Writing Comics" at a local Barnes & Nobles. But I remember learning more from that than the borrowed content from the screenwriting course since - if you think about it - comics/graphic novels and video games have more in common. Both are built from the ground-up to use a combination of visuals & writing to tell a story, for instance. Whereas a script kinda starts the ball rolling, then the storyboard starts thinking out how that script should be visualized... not to mention pre-production in general is it's own thing, etc. A good comic has the art tell a certain part of the story - you don't need the sentence, "I'm leaving!" if the artist draws a character walking out the door during a fight with another character, right? Just as the action in a game can - and should - move a story forward without needing a redundant cutscene or a triggered line of dialogue. And both storytelling mediums don't have to be squeezed into a certain length to be satisfying, like with movies here. I remember looking at scripts, and OUTLINING the story for a game in detail, with tons of visuals naturally. Still, I think I wrote 30+ pages before ever adding in visuals. Alas, the class had to be cut short, so we didn't actually get to any serious writing. Well, I'm sure for some classmates, just coming up with an outline was a brutal amount of work, but I'm pretty decent at writing so I didn't mind. But I didn't actually write any scripts. Sorry I can't remember more I can talk a little more about scripting/localizing duties for Japanese cartoons aimed at kids though! At least, from bad companies that hire college students to write stuff for them on the cheap. I may have only had a tangential brush with screenwriting, but I am close to two people who made it their careers. My roommate for most of college is now a director of short films & music videos, and I picked up a ton from him. My sister too majored in it at Tisch School of the Arts in NYU. It's through connections such as these (won't say which), that I ended up ghostwriting at least 2 episodes of an anime aimed at kids that came out a few years ago. I thought it was neat and was roughly familiar with the property (plus I assume the process is similar for localizing Japanese games). However, I shouldn't speak about it because a) I assume there were NDA's in place, and... I kinda forgot what it was called I remember the "Umbrella series" property, but cannot remember the name of the specific offshoot. Here's an analogy: It wasn't Dragonball (I wish it was, but it was before I went to college), but it would be like knowing I wrote for a Dragon Ball show, but forgetting if it was for an episode of Dragon Ball, DBZ, Dragon Ball GT, or Dragon Ball Z: Kai -- that's what I'm talking about. -
Episode 5 — Paul F. Tompkins, Our Close Friend
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hollywood Handbook
Paul F. Tompklns - while he's no Adam Pally - was an okay guest here "Paul, thank you so much" "It is I who should be thanking you" "Okay" This was a great episode. It's neat to see someone who can almost, sort of hang out with these two. I mean, no.2 with Engineer Cody? That's praise that Sean & Hayes don't toss around lightly, Mr. Tompkins. It was pretty well-earned. After all, Hollywood Handbook is here to teach all us mortals, and now I know how to stay in the Funny Zone. Thank you, sir. Thank you. I really gotta find some money for a Pro Version! PFT's phone messages are AMAZING! And that Secret Backpack... Jeez louise! NO OTHER PODCAST ON EARWOLF GIVES US TREASURE HUNTS! You got a lot of work to do, "How Did This Get Made" -- yeah, that's right, I said it. It's out there now. We all know who Hollywood Handbook's main rival is here on the site. A distant competitor, and the word competitor is being generous, but a competitor all the same Regardless, I see no reason to be "civil" and pretend like there's no feud. Step it up, HDTGM! When will you guys launch your Secret Backpack contest, huh!?! -
Episode 9 — Why Every Movie Plot Follows Weirdly Specific Rules
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Cracked Podcast
I'm only 46 minutes in, just about. I'm expecting a big, dramatic moment in about 14 minutes... I am genuinely surprised that Joseph Campbell's Journey of Heroes (or Hero's Journey) was never namedropped. That's exactly the template they're talking about, the thing pulled from myths and whatnot for hundreds (thousands?) of years. Especially since they mentioned screenwriting 101 - all screenwriting classes mention this thing. Learned a ton here that I never heard in a screenwriting class though (not that I was going into screenwriting, but the Game Design class at the Art Institute included it when I went through there because they cobbled together the first half of the course from other majors). That 60 minute rule especially seems mind-blowing. Definitely gotta check that out! Also, I had no idea Harmon script-doctored Kung Fu Panda. That's one thing he's worked on that I like Also, the blue & orange thing. First off, I love that, because I grew up in NYC and a lot of our teams use those colors. Always seemed natural to me, never knew there was a rather... nefarious purpose behind it all. Maybe there's a subconscious reason why our loser teams like the Mets will always have fans. Or the Knicks, or Islanders, etc. We, apparently, just love those colors. Secondly, not just movies use that stuff. It seems to infect big budget, creatively bankrupt, mainstream video games just as badly. If not worse. -
Episode 4 — Adam Pally, Our Close Friend
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hollywood Handbook
rofl. Hollywood Handbook, you never disappoint! Easily, the best interviews on the internet about anything! "Now, obviously, I don't own a TV..." "You don't own a TV and you're doing a show about Television!?" - Jesus, this is amazing. But man, these guests of yours. Constantly coming in with a chip on their shoulders like they're kings of Hollywood. Well Mr. Pally, you may have been in Iron Man 3 (whatever that is. I never heard of it), but until you get your own Earwolf podcast, like the Big Boys do, you'll always be second fiddle to Titans of the Industry like Sean & Hayes. And what is with these guys on FOX comedies not knowing the names of their own show? Next week, are we going to get Andy Samberg in to talk about "Bronx 8-10" or something? Jeez. Random thoughts: 1) I KNEW Sean was responsible for Chappelle's Show! I KNEW IT! 2) The Pro Version this week sounds awesome! 3) And Adam, you were a wonderful guest. Treated Sean & Hayes - HEROES OF HOLLYWOOD, as I like to call them, since they remind me of Batman so much - with the utmost respect Question for the next guest. Which Network and/or Movie Studio (depends on how big a star you are) is the worst? I liked how Adam took shots at ABC and mentioned how TV really works, where Executive shuffling will tank projects willy-nilly, simply because they're all greedy, egotistical assholes who can't ever share credit for a successful show. So they'd rather sabotage a great show and develop their own pile of dogshit than actually support & build a brand. That was neat Next guest, talk about stuff like that, please. Let's get into the nitty-gritty about why NBC and/or Universal sucks so hard. That's what I wanna hear. Sean, Hayes, bust that out at the next popcorn gallery. RELATED Question: Which comedy are you glad got canceled fastest this season? Probably something on ABC - I hear that network sucks. OTHER Question for the next guest: You can play younger than you normally do. Did you know that? You're very attractive. -

Episode 151 — Redeemed or Unredeemed, Hashtag!
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Who Charted?
Oh, Mr. Tompkins was quite redeemed, I'd say. That's my vote! And Howard too. Heck, Kulap as well - everyone's redeemed! NO ONE is undeemed here on "Who Charted?" -- it's too good of a podcast to besmirch with some irredeemable antics. Also, good looking out, Ku-Ku! I totally forgot about the Dead Author's Podcast until you suggested it for the plug! I have some catching up to do! As per the will of the plugs section, I will also head to Youtube and some more. I saw one episode - with either Adam Scott or Ben Schwartz on it (I get those two confused for some reason) - liked it a lot, and subscribed to Paul's Youtube Channel. But the, "What to Watch" feed on my Youtube homepage buries it under updates for other channels. EDIT: rofl @ the Ben Franklin episode! Hot Saucerman knocked it out of the park! Clearly, he did his research on Ben Franklin before doing the show! "We're colonialists! We live in Boston, right? Or something? Hard to say... we live in Maine, or somewhere. I dunno. New England!" Hahahaha. -
I'm with you. I don't hate Pete - I've heard him on other podcasts and he's fine (Doug Loves Movies, for instance) - but he was brutal here. His laugh alone steamrolled over other people's audio, and he laughed at almost everything he did -- he needs to learn from Paul F. Tompkins (among others) and MOVE AWAY FROM THE MIC when he's laughing. It's not hard, bro. I couldn't even finish this one, and what I did listen to was pretty annoying. It disrupts the flow of the show and the comedy. While I don't instantly hate Mr. Holmes though, I will say this. I hate TBS for giving him a show over Jimmy Pardo. If anyone should've gotten a post-Conan TV Show, it should be him. Considering he does regular features on Conan's show already, such as the "Pardo Patrol" - so he's a known quantity on TBS - and is an excellent comedian regardless, he's an OBVIOUS choice to be spun off from Conan and follow that show up. It's great that they're doing more original programming, and giving shots to "comedy nerds' comedians" in lieu of airing crappy shows like The Office in syndication following Conan, I just don't see the logic in this particular move.

What!?! Just "Fall has truly fallen"? I demand a proper weather report, Scott! How will I know how Hollywood nights are going?! There's no other place to go for weather news! I want to compare how Octobers in Pennsylvania compare to Rocktober over there in Hollywood. Probably not well

They're giving this on AMC right now (Tuesday, 8pm EST). Aaaaaand *hits record*. Thank you DirecTV! Can't wait to see this for myself now that HDTGM has prepared me mentally to handle it. -

Episode 103 — LIVE from LA Podfest
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
This one has a couple segments that should end up on the next Best Of, Matt! I could not stop laughing at not just the Aggie story, but the ensuing urine women skit. The shitting robot - excuse me, defecating robot was brilliant. The exterminator for the VHS tapes? The guy who won the lottery? The tapes of the guy's brother dying from cancer? So much gold! And so many smart callbacks -- I died when I heard, "What are your skills!?" "Blumpkin". lol. This team was great, and the show was amazing. I4H - BEST. PODCAST. IN THE UNIVERSE! -

I wasn't there, but I want to throw my "woos" behind Doctor Who as well. Star Wars & Star Trek, I love too (at least The Next Generation), but after The Doctor got rebooted in 2004 or whatever, that's just been stupid good, you guys. David Tennant & Matt Smith are great actors, as well as several of those companions. Karen Gillan? C'mon! Being able to cover so many genres - comedic, horror, straight sci-fi, etc. Is also a strength there. And some of those monsters are just so cool. The Blind Angels? The Cybermen? Love that show! My Woo goes to the Doctor Maybe your boy was confused because, for the older generations, Doctor Who means that cheap show on PBS that starred that Willy Wonka-looking chap in the colorful scarf, Matt. Oh and also, with Star Wars, it's not just 6 movies, but it's 5 seasons of the Clone Wars cartoon and BY FAR the most - and best - video game library, as well as tons & tons of comics. I mean, you wanna get nerdy, let's get nerdy -
This may not be loaded with laughs (which is disappointing considering it's Cracked & Earwolf), but it sure is interesting. It's cool to see how the train of thought goes that leads to the eventual articles that show up on Cracked.com at least. And it's neat to hear this kind of stuff in general. I'm surprised they never actual touched on actual super heroes though - why people don't like Superman and seem to prefer Batman en masse, for one. It's way easier, apparently, to ignore the fact that Bruce Wayne was rich when you compare him to the Man of Steel. But you can literally go down a checklist and see "Oh. This BS is why America thinks so-and-so is more popular". Is he/she an orphan, yay or nay? Oh, they HAVE parents? Well, America will hate them. *sigh* I'm a Superman fan too. And a Kanye West fan. And my favorite Disney movie is The Great Mouse Detective, and he was no orphan! This was frustrating to listen to, simply because it made so much sense ;P Lesson learned. America loves underdogs. They hate advantages, families, and talent. I GET it. You're all stupid. This is why American Idol and all other reality shows do those dumb packages about why the singers are there, and usually it's the person with the best, most manufactured (usually somewhat "tragic") story that gets voted to the next round. Way to be easily manipulated, mass audiences. I'm glad I don't fall into the group of people who mindlessly fall for this stuff though.

Season of the Witch, eh? Fine, fine - that's a great choice. But you won't be able to avoid Killer Klowns from Outer Space forever, Paul! Man, Netflix really screwed this 'cast over when they dropped those, like, 3k titles a few months ago. Stupid Netflix. Moving towards original programming and dropping a ton of the stuff people actually like. No more STARZ content. No more South Park? No more James Bond movies? All the other Viacom shows? Movies from MGM, Universal and Warner Bros.? And, worst of all, no more cheesy movies that end up on How Did This Get Made? It's been a long time since I heard of Netflix actually making deals FOR a huge chunk of movies/TV shows... I really should just cancel my subscription soon. June, bravo *applause*. That dramatic reading was awesome! Can't wait for next week!

Episode 2 — Blake Anderson, Our Close Friend
VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hollywood Handbook
I have a question for the Popcorn Gallery, despite having no idea who's up for guesting next week. Considering Sean & Hayes' heavyweight standing in Hollywood, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a true Titan of the film industry - excuse me if my blind guess is a little off-base... Dear Mr. DiCaprio or Dame Helen Mirren, How have you kept your incredible success in show business from changing you as a person? How do you remain so grounded and personable when Hollywood is constantly knocking on your door, constantly throwing money, booze & drugs at you... generally, doing their best to inflate your ego and turn you into some out-of-touch, deranged mess to be mocked for the TMZ's, STAR Magazines and all the other paparazzo out there? -

VinsanityV22 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hollywood Handbook
lol. I thought this as well. But now that Sean & Hayes have said otherwise, I'm inclined to believe them here. The next time I am near a stream, I will have to conduct some tests! Also, how DARE the naysayers come out of the woodwork! SHOW YOURSELVES! Where are these critics!? These haters? These trolls? I know Sean & Hayes are too cool to even care about 'em, and can just brush 'em off like nothing. But this shouldn't stand regardless. They don't have to be doing this - we already had them walk away from one podcast! I don't want to live in a world where Sean & Hayes are constantly one slight push away from depriving us of their genius and experience. These trolls shant be tolerated! Shant? Shan't? That must be how you spell it - the squiggly red line didn't show up for that version. ... what am I talking about again? Oh yes; the trolls. DAMN YOU JOEL COEN AND YOUR ARMY OF TROLLS! It's about time someone started a feud with you! And apparently, those persons have to be Sean & Hayes here. Time to disrupt Hollywood - again - boys. I know you're used to it by now. We're behind you guys 100% Also, being a wrestling fan, I absolutely have to check out The Goldbergs now. Thanks Sean & Hayes - this was totally off-my-radar until now! -

Here's some fascinating old-school, groundbreaking CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) to take a look at: Brilliance, 1985. Ostensibly some sort of ad for canned food, but really, just an excuse for a sexy robot lady. Maybe she's related to the gynoid chick who does Improv4Humans? -

I feel like you can get a sense of how popular a show is by looking at the comments/forum activity associated with each show, true. But also, you don't need a ton of activity to be profitable (or rather, not lose money). If anyone can succcessfully do a show in their spare time, or for practically nothing, I imagine they're "less of a target" to be made redundant than something that requires the engineers and whanot.
