A Serious Man vs. Inside Llewyn Davis
KickMuncher3 replied to JordantheG1ng3r's topic in Movie Suggestions
I love both these films (especially Inside Llewyn Davis), but I feel like they would make better solo episodes, because neither is a shoo-in Coen film and both films' canon-worthiness is up for debate. -

I know it's all a matter of taste, but what about it hasn't aged well? I watched Shrek and Shrek 2 earlier this year and still love both those movies. -

We can always hold out for a Dreamworks-loving guest. -
I've yet to watch the film, but I think it's only fair that Amy solicits votes from outside the listenership for this one.

Well, I guess that's that then. -

To be fair, I haven't seen Prince of Egypt since I was a child, but I didn't like it then. It's certainly overdue for another look from me. But still I think Shrek is more representative of Dreamworks animation's entire catalogue, not to mention the influence it's had on so much of 21st animation even outside of Dreamworks. -

I was thinking a Shrek vs. Shrek 2 would make a good episode. Shrek defined Dreamworks animation's aesthetic, as you say, and created possibly the most recognizable animated characters of the 21st century (kinda the closest thing this generation has to a Bugs Bunny or Micky Mouse, like it or not), not to mention that it's just a really great film. But I personally think Shrek 2 is the superior film, certainly the superior comedy, and it was the highest grossing comedy of all time at the time of it's release. It's honestly one of my favourite comedies period. The jokes in that film come hard and fast. I would even go so far as to compare it to early Simpsons episodes. Anyway, I think Dreamworks animation belongs in the canon, but these are the only 2 canon-worthy films they've made. -
I feel meh about most of the beatles in general, but i love this movie. A+ joke-telling. An easy yes.

John Lennon, but specifically Mike Hanford's version of John Lennon

Episode 71 - Summer Camp: Live from Fox Cabaret in Vancouver, BC (w/ The Sunday Service)
KickMuncher3 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins
I highly recommend going by yourself. I went alone to this show as well as Comedy Bang Bang the night before and had a blast. Never deny yourself a great experience. Also, the 'childhood trauma' question is extra funny now knowing that it was written by Rachel Bloom. Can't wait to find out what Caitlin asked. -

This was a great episode. I saw it live and had such a blast. A couple visual bits didn't quite translate. There's was a great bit at the end where "Jeremy" leans in to kiss "Diane" and she leans back in disgust. And those massage hand had to be seen to be believed. -

Blood Simple vs No Country for Old Men

Totally agree! I love Raising Arizona and I'd definitely vote yes for the canon. It's just so hard to make a Top 5 Coens list. It's an embarrassment of riches. -

It's a hard list to make once you really sit down to do it, but I'll say: Fargo Barton Fink No Country for Old Men Burn After Reading The Big Lebowski ...I'll forgive your inclusion of Hudsucker, if you forgive my inclusion of Burn After Reading. I find that film incredibly funny and rewatchable. It was just a really fun theatre-going experience -
Blood Simple vs No Country for Old Men

I love Blood Simple, but it's No Country no question for me. No Country for Old Men is Top 5 Coen Brothers as far as I'm concerned. Blood Simple was a hell of an introduction to a new creative voice, but No Country is those creatives at the top of their game. -
In the Heat of the Night vs. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
KickMuncher3 posted a topic in Movie Suggestions
Two fantastic Best Picture nominees from 1967 and two of Sidney Poitier's greatest performances. Both deal with racial tension rather gracefully (especially for the time), but vastly different ways (dramatic vs. comedic). I think it could make for a good discussion and a brutal choice at the polls. -
Maybe i'm a horrible person, but Mickey Rooney is one of the reasons I voted yes. Don't get me wrong, his character is cringe-inducing and i condemn it, but if the canon is going to be representative of film history, it's going to have to be a really racist canon. Breakfast at Tiffany's is a very popular, hugely influential film with an incredibly racist (and incredibly superfluous) asian caricature. This was considered acceptable comic relief and to exclude that from the canon is like pretending it never was, which i can't do.

They did, but Devin still voted Yes based on historical importance.

I think I remember the film...

Whatever loses this week has my vote for the next 2nd Chance episode (i voted Boogie by a hair).
-
I've watched Boogie fairly recently, but haven't seen Blood since 2007. I recall enjoying it, but just never felt the urge to go back. It'll be interesting to revisit it this week.
-
Perhaps this is too much of an indulgence, but the movie I've probably seen more than any other is 2007's Hot Rod. It's something i'm always in the mood to watch and will probably always find funny, but i don't think it belongs within an mile of the canon.
