That thing you do! (1996. Tom Hanks, Liv Tyler)
seanotron replied to TheOldAmbition's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
It's somewhat saccharine, but hardly HDTGM worthy. As I recall, this was not only critically well-liked, but the song was incredibly popular. Worth noting that Hanks did a Director's Cut about 10 years after it came out, restoring a lot of character stuff that had been cut. Like the fact that his character was gay. -
I'd like to make it weird

Yeah, someone actually told Kathy Ireland she should talk like that because...comedy? I guess?

I was holding out for a 7th Heaven reference, but alas it never came.

If you don't like Time After Time (an American movie, actually) you deserve to disintegrate. It's awesome.

Maybe I just have a soft spot for Wesley Snipes kicking ass, but I really enjoyed it. And I think GDT has a gift for this kind of thing.

IIRC, the source material is a huge mess, so I'm not sure why anyone thought it would make for a good movie.

I didn't mind this one too much, but I do remember thinking it was the most charisma-less movie I'd ever seen. Josh Lucas & Jessica Biel are basically the king & queen of bland.

Yeah, this was a real disappointing ending to that series. Too bad they couldn't keep Del Toro, his movie was the best of the bunch. And Ryan Reynolds was, as always, totally miscast.

I actually thought January Jones was perfect for that character. She's supposed to be an ice queen (har har), and that's kind of the only thing JJ can pull off. Thus why she's so good in Mad Men but basically nothing else. I agree about Darwin (the black guy), but if they follow the comics he should make a return appearance (basically he turns into a pure energy being). I think Edi Gathegi even hinted that it was in the works to bring him back at some point.

You even have your choice between the dubbed version and the Thickest Austrian Accent Ever version! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAReTzVG-yw

Except in that episode they specifically play a PR interview with her and proceed to make fun of everything she said in it. I'm not saying that's the reason, but something went down that was serious enough that they pulled the episode, and it's the only time they've ever done that.

Look at it this way, if you had 2 jobs, and one of those jobs involved making fun of a co-worker at your other job, it would likely make for an uncomfortable work environment at said job.

I can see where you're coming from, as I think she has played a lot of stiff, kind of uninteresting characters. One of the reasons I like her in Moulin Rouge so much is she's really vamping it up & having a great time of it. And I really enjoyed To Die For. I think she absolutely makes the film work. I don't have any particular attachment to Van Sant, I just thought it was a very sharp black comedy.

I think she had a good run in the late 90s/early aughts. I thought she was great in Moulin Rouge, To Die For and The Others.

' I get that, I'm just not sure that Doug Benson not liking a movie makes for a good episode of this show.

Clue is a really funny black comedy. I don't think there's anything there to chew on.

One has to wonder how you screw up Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I mean, even if you just played it like every other version of the story, you'd still hit more marks than you'd miss. And the moral was just insane. 'Be happy there's horrific violence every day, because that just means humans are still humans and we haven't been replaced by alien pods!'

I feel like I need to give Aplop Richardsock a hard time out of loyalty to Ku-Ku, but I must say good job! But Matt Besser, you are on my list for dissing Dune. ON MY LIST, SIR!

Seriously, when I watch one of his films I feel like I'm performing a kind of self-flagellation to atone for some unspeakable sin I committed in another life.

I actually think Waterworld is more boring than hilariously bad. Admittedly, Dennis Hopper kind of does a parody of himself in this movie, but it's mostly just a slog to get through the whole thing.

Not to overstate it but

HIghlander and Greystoke are great, but yeah, pretty much every other movie he's made has been pretty awful (since the 90s anyway).
