There's definitely a fine line that's sometimes hard to define when it comes to movies that are ridiculous but amazing and movies that are just ridiculous. I wouldn't be too keen on this one, as it falls in the latter category for me. It's like a Syfy movie. No one made this thinking it would be taken seriously. It has a sense of humor about itself but the jokes don't land.

Total bummers is right. I pray Paul's moratorium on Boll movies is upheld.

This is on tonight and I'd forgotten how bonkers that first 10 minutes really is. So much effort to establish that it's 1997 ('Why would someone kill Princess Di?' 'I'm going to put on some Backstreet Boys and go to sleep'), which is ultimately so unimportant. The terrible actresses who are clearly *not* twins. That lady lawyer who talks like Dennis Miller. The naked yoga with the Sonicare. Pacino doing that weird cross-eyed face on the phone with William Forsythe. YOINKS.

It's not that they took the piss out of it (that was surely expected), but the overall tone of the episode. I was just expecting a totally different episode than what we got. But hey, such is life.

The Ninth Gate (1999)
seanotron replied to choochoo_the_wonder_slut's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
I love that the trailer makes a point of saying it made '$20 million at the box office'. They may as well have said, 'George Wendt says Ninth Gate is a winner!'. 'Peter Scolari says you must see this movie!' -
There are actually some cool ideas at play in Krull (I loved the Widow of the Web part) but it's definitely mock-worthy. The Slayers are basically just Imperial Stormtroopers (and about as good with a gun). The whole thing is a very uneven marriage between sci-fi and fantasy. The female lead in this was Lysette Anthony, who was a fairly big name in the 80s. She was famously in Depeche Mode's video for 'I Feel You'.

This would be a fun one. Yes, it's silly and knows it, but it's still crazy. Our protagonist murders dozens of people!

No, but I imagine it might have made it somewhat clearer what the movie was about. The marketing for this movie was completely incomprehensible.

I have a feeling it didn't go beyond, 'Isn't it hilarious? She's blonde but she knows stuff!'.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

I loved this movie. It was unfairly maligned. And badly marketed.

More or less, yeah. I found that Name of the King episode kind of dire to listen to. It's like that new one Syfy did, Chupacabras vs the Alamo...it's not like they thought they were making a good movie.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

If this was directed at me no worries, I was just kidding.- 17 replies

See, movies like this are so deliberately and knowingly awful that I don't think they'd work that well. Syfy knows exactly what it's doing when it makes shit like this. Contrast this with Birdemic, which is equally poor but so damn earnest. That's what makes it fun to mock.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
seanotron replied to roswellxavier's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Oh now see, we were having such a nice little discussion and now you had to anger my inner nerd by insulting one of the greatest TV shows of all time. In fairness, season 3 has most of the stinkers, like 'Spock's Brain' and 'The Way to Eden'.- 17 replies

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
seanotron replied to roswellxavier's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
I'd call it light-hearted and optimistic. And given the resurgence in whaling and the ivory trade, the message is still worthwhile.- 17 replies

All I can tell you is that while the novel wasn't exactly the greatest piece of literature around, it did not involve that crazy laser fight nor Amy's ridiculous computer voice.

This is a great one. And I agree, it would be a nice palate cleanser after say, a Uwe Boll movie.

In the Name of the King - Budget
seanotron replied to AdamLevenberg's topic in How Did This Get Made?
It's entirely possible it's a garbage number, but it's the only number available so what else can they work with? Honestly, if he spent half that he still spent too much.
