  1. You've gotta be effing kidding me. Why do you you hipster creeps keep suggesting awesome movies? You're making my soul hurt.

Awesome movies are not immune from the HDTGM treatment. In fact, they often make for great episodes (Crank/Crank 2, Punisher, etc.).

  2. 3) A British propaganda film. That's why you have all of those confusing cameos by Hoskins, Moore, and Elton John. I think Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry were doing their TV show at the time, so they would have been big stars in England as well. I think the Brits really enjoy them, that's why they were a part of the Olympic opening ceremonies.

I think #3 is partly right, but it was more of a Cool Britannia thing that sprung out of Britpop. It was a celebration of quintessentially British things. So the movie is just stuffed to the gills with famous British people for the hell of it, basically. Fry & Laurie are considered national treasures in the UK, so it's not surprising they'd be included (I'm pretty sure their show was off the air some time before this came out though).

  3.

With that being said, I did think it was complete and utter sacrilege when they called 'From Justin to Kelly' better than this, and that Jason was wrong with dissing the ballad. It was perfect to begin it with 'Too Much', and perfect to end with 'Spice Up Your Life'!

Wow, I missed that part. No way was From Justin to Kelly better than this. That's some serious crazy talk.

  4. Sorry, I'm watching this right now and had forgotten some of the nutty dialog.

    'Check out that refresh rate!'

    'That has a 28kbps modem!'

'It does have a PCI bus'

It's like someone just opened a PC repair guide and created dialog from it.

  5. I have this weird image in my head that Jason lives in a Kaczynski-style shack in the woods somewhere with no electricity or contact with the outside world, and he has some secret exit that he covers with fake foliage. I totally get his disinterest in Twitter (I have one but never check it), but it seems like he's always being told about things going on in his own career that he should already know about. Between his comments here and St Clair's revelation on Whooch that he's super secretive about his address, I think I might be onto something.

  6. This episode honestly bummed me out a little. After the positive forum reactions I thought the gang would have at least had a little more fun with it. but everyone just seemed mad.

But after my supervisor left for lunch, I did start blasting Spice Girls and did Scary's shoulder dance until I felt better.

I feel ya on that. I wish they'd engaged with it for what it was, rather than ridiculing silly plot points that were obviously meant to be silly. It seemed like only June really gave it a fair shot.

That being said, this was still funny. I was highly amused by how angry Retta was for being asked to watch the movie.

  7. You know why Sean Connery agreed to be in this movie, a movie he did not understand? It was because he was offered a part in The Matrix but turned it down because he did not understand it. Then he was offered a part in Lord of the Rings and again because he did not understand it he declined. Seeing how successful both of those were he agreed to this movie he again did not understand. Bad move Connery.

So the guy that did Zardoz couldn't understand Lord of the Rings? Really?

  8. Wow. I'm not interested in bickering or going through the movie scene by scene (Was really hoping Scheer & co. would handle that), but I'm genuinely surprised to see so many people circling the wagons around such an objectively crummy movie. I was hoping to hear at least one other dissenting opinion on this darling of a hit, but so it goes I guess.

I don't think anyone is defending the film's content, they're simply explaining why this type of movie doesn't really work for the show. No one is saying you have to like the movie. But I've found a good HDTGM movie really does have to beg the question, how did this get made? In the case of Silver Linings Playbook - even if you don't like it - I don't think that question is all that hard to answer.

  9. I mean, I'm sure 9/11 did have an effect on the movie business, but as I recall everyone knew Glitter was a bomb before it even came out. I just find it totally hilarious that she seriously tried to blame it on 9/11.

  10. This movie is perfect HDTGM fodder. What plot there is doesn't even bother trying to make sense. Amanda Seyfried straight-up burns a guy alive. The police are THE WORST EVER. Totally discussion worthy.
