Episode 115 — Daniel the Miracle Beagle
Corky Kneivel replied to Gabe Danon's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
I love Wengert and he was amazing as usual, but the other two guys, Dominic Dierkes & Sean Clements, weren't very good. Giggling throughout the whole show which was just mildly annoying but from start to finish weren't funny. Their scene set-ups were weak and confusing, making people unusual without clearly directing how they wanted to go or giving any help beyond that. When that's done on this show with other performers its not a problem but Clements & Dierkes performances suffered from that. They also directly used the story a bunch, not just little snippets like Wengert didwith th "last 5 minutes" thing but the entire scenario was just regurgitated. Again, that can and has been great when done well or when it leads to something but that never materialized. Repeatedly their contributions hurt more than help. The deleted scene was much the same specifically the way the movie exec was cut in, awkwardly introduced, and then puts the onus of being funny is put on the other performers. Nobody else mentioned them in any way negative so perhaps I'm off on this one? -

Episode 108 — I Do Muther-F-N-improv!
Corky Kneivel replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
Haven't Listened Yet But thank you so much for having Adam McKay back. The one with him and Chris Gethard ((another who needs to come back)) is one of the greatest episodes of the greatest podcast in the universe. I loved how McKay cut scenes as a director would, setting up the look of it and continuing the narrative of the scenes with montages and scrolling words. PLUS he talks about Jim fucking Breur. Oh frabjous day kaloo kalay! -
These past 2 episodes have been amazing, this one was stellar. Sounds like you guys are playing a longish session then breaking thsoe up and that sounds like a great idea. Brian's commitment to that character was the highlight of the episode not to mention the whole concept of the character being created to be a foil for Sir Richard. It would've been often if he was from Glinnishmost I like Sarah getting after him too "We just detected evil on yoru ass, so...."

Or mini-episode? Probably too creepy, but...what about a celebrity sex tape episode? Hear me out. I think it could be funny. Not from a creepiness/titillation factor but to really dwell on I mean to really posit "How Did This Get Made?"Why was it released" and "what was the effect" You could do the "not meant to be released" ones: Paris, HUlk Hogan. Pamela & Tommy. The "meant to be released ones but we're supposed to act like they're not": Kim K., Kendra Whatever Then the ones that are "no bones about it meant to be released" like Chynna, Octo-Mom, and John Wayne Bobbit? You could of course discuss the actual sex but I SWEAR that's not why i would listen. At least its like only 15% of why i would listen.

WENGERT!! This line up is like a dream -
Gerry not being there is something I really didn't consider when I posted originally but have thought about since it was mentioned. I both agree and disagree with that notion. I think it’s a perfectly reasonable reason (delaying for his return) for the repetitive nature of this episode. However I think it’s been trending towards this type of episode and some of the repleis here seem to bear that out. I will also cop that I can sometimes be a little alarmist about things like making it so a slow episode, or a couple of slow episodes is now "a problem" with the show. Perhaps thats the situation here and I hope my comments are taken more as wonderign if the listening community feels the same, or, flattering myself, a sort of constructive criticism for BP&F and its not seen as me merely talking shit.

Just to clarify: I don’t want constant battle and I’m not interested in a show with no “banter”. Telling me that banter exists at game tables is as pointless as telling me RPGs aren’t always about fighting. It’s condescending and doesn’t even address what I brought up. As I said above, I thought the charm of the show was that some hilarious people are playing a RPG and not only was it very funny and interesting character wise, it was a well crafted story campaign. It’s why I was drawn to the show, why I recommended the show, and was the spur for me to get heavily into the RPG podcasts that exist. It WAS that show for the 1st half or maybe ¾ of this podcast’s existence. Recently however the fucking around outweighs what has become a stalled, hard to get into, storyline. I find it interesting that, outside of my opinion that the show is better when there’s less fucking around, nobody’s asserting that what I’ve said about the content is wrong in any way. Nobody’s insisting that the show IS focused or debating whether this current storyline is stuck on slow or that it’s not more “banter” than any actual game. The sentiment that the show has changed since its inception was echoed as well. Someone also said they are bored by the storyline and another that they lose interest easily. The common consensus seems to be that the show is “banter” first and foremost, actual RPG second, and that the RPG is slow, boring, and dismissible, but that’s okay since it’s solely the device to get BP&F together to fuck around. That seems to be the prevailing interpretation of the show based on the replies to my post. The disconnect is just whether an individual finds that entertaining or not. If that’s the assessment of the show, and is what the show is, that makes me sad. Sad because I don’t want that to be the show they’re getting together to make when the marriage of creative comedians and RPG is a no-brainer match made in Heaven for me. There’s so many podcasts that are just people sitting around bullshitting and I don’t want my problem with the show to be simply what the show is. Because then the problem is just me and only goes away if I do. For all the talk about “banter” being the best part of the show, the players being cautious and smart in their gameplay, and assumption that I’m complaining about lack of fights, let’s break down the episode. It began with a recap of the last episode, interestingly enough addressing comments that the fans wanted a resolution to the current storyline. As I said earlier they were on the lift (the one from previous episodes) and they had a strength check for something I’m not quite sure what. Then they get off and find more hallways, more paintings(?), lots of doors. I’ve loved the description of this place but this is the same thing we’ve heard since #35. They busted open doors boots first and found more tubed up men. Like before, they cut some free and watched them die. They found a semi-alive one who said “save my planet”. That was the episode. It was all stuff they’d seen and done before, and the DEFINITELY weren’t cautiously avoiding fights, and there was no headway at all. In between all of it they fucked around, cracked each other up, and grossed each other out (“banter”) and that was why more stuff didn’t happen. I felt this way last episode too when they were debating the merits of a cliff-hanger. All I could think was ”It doesn’t HAVE to be a cliffhanger if you just actually get to the shit!!” I don’t need fighting non-stop but I do want things to progress. I hadn’t considered, as someone said, that Sark might be stalling which would make sense and, as anyone who’s gamed regularly has, I’ve seen DMs be unprepared and wing it/stall advancement a bit. Seems odd since it’s a show and all, but I guess its possible. I flat out disagree that the players are overly cautious and that explains why things aren’t progressing. I agree they’re confused and can be overly timid, but I think that’s more down to having not a clue about what’s happening or how to get to the old wizard. I agree a lot with Jackson1326657838 and that user said it better than I did, probably. I doubt BP&F want everyone acknowledging how “stuck in the mud” the current storyline is and how most people tune out everything but “banter”. They’re all of them creative people, some of them entertainers and are putting this out for entertainment purposes. But maybe I’m wrong because it seems as I’m in the minority of finding its current iteration sub-par.

Christ! Sark (meanderingly) begins the episode by stating that last episode’s cliffhanger featured them getting on a lift. At the 21:13 mark of this one he says “Okay so you guys are now off the lift”. In between we were treated to: bad impressions, horse fuckery, a dice roll for something, and lots and lots of snoring, This show should change its name to "Shaft Poker", "Amazing Elevator Adventures" or "My Lift Foot" (if you want to get all artsy-fartsy) just so people know what they're getting themselves into. I have been LOVING the creepiness aspect of the current “old wizard” storyline. Hallway after hallway of gothic design and pictures of this creepy, obviously evil, old man in a variety of triumphant conquering poses is just chilling. However they first came to this place in the eponymous The Dark Tower (episode #35) and that was 10 episodes ago. Very little has happened since then beyond lenses, Mildred getting possessed, the old man making threats, and Amarth slaying some collectors. There’s been some Bahamut Blasts, Dragonborn breath, and Stargoyle soul sucking as well. Oh and also a DVD extended scene from Se7en with a Halfling hooked to some tubes that was pretty gross. It may seem like I contradicted myself saying not much has happened then naming things that have happened but if memory serves me correctly a single episode contained the majority of that action. For me this show is vastly more entertaining when they’re focused on the game and actually progressing the story rather than fucking around. The fucking around is fun and is a huge piece of the charm of the show but I like the format of the first 20 episodes or so better than what they’ve been doing lately. From the very beginning, to just a little after the big fight on the water plane with the Water Boss things moved along pretty neatly, goals were met, the concept of “leveling up” wasn’t just a punchline, and the story Sark created for them was more solid and linear. Not that there was no fucking around but it was more like a 80/20 ratio of gameplay to playplay. About around the floating fart planet (was that a planet?) and the flying mouth on top of the head things they had to talk and toss meat to, to this creepy old man its all gotten a little too unwieldy for me. The more esoteric it’s become the less I’ve enjoyed it. I don’t know that I have a point here beyond venting and maybe some tough love. I’ve been listening from the beginning, I should say I’ve been HOOKED from the beginning, and it’s still appointment listening for me every Wednesday morning but I’ve found I’m not recommending it to my friends any more. I was happy to hear them discuss and acknowledge recently their “style of play” and I really hope this doesn’t just come across as complaining about that. ANyhow I’ve paused the show right now to write this and I sincerely hope I’m proven wrong by the remainder of the episode. But I wouldn't be surprised if at the end they hadn't confrotned th eold man, hadn't made it much beyond the elevator, and we were still weren't clear as to the meaning behind anythign that's going on.

Episode 100 — Best of improv4humans Vol. 3
Corky Kneivel replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
Hahaha like none of ones I mentioned are on here. OH SHIT. They did the Tom Petty beard sketch. I loved the breakdown and improv discussion of that one. It probably sounds corny but hearing Matt Besser, Paul Rust, and Gemberling discuss initiations, pimping, and who’s unsual and who’s grounded gave me improv happies. -

This is easily the best podcast in all the guldanged universii. So much entertainment every week and I’ve been here for 96 episodes. That means I win. I haven't listened to this Best Of yet, I don't think I voted for this one. I mean…there....why there could be ANYTHING on here! There could be anything from the last 99 episodes on this episode. The possibilities are near limitless. There could be: a Matt Besser Weird Guy™ voice... Lauren Lapkus could talk about ass play... Tim Meadows and Horatio Sanz could be cracking each other up... WENGERT!! could be on there... Lennon Parham and brian Huskey could be excitably enthusiastic about something... Chad Carter could be fucking brilliant... John Gemberling could talk about ass play but with ass meaning donkey this time... satanic face scraping… fecal blow through (FBT)… jazz scat cruiseships… the Sprite dunk-off brought to by Sprite…soda…. the guy who's just "doing his thing" at the worst possible time… a blind brothel goer… albino friend census… the world's best (and worst) Raiders fan… GLORM… the Sunshine Band Van… a Tom Petty beard thief… apocalypse crush smush scenarios… Dale Oshack of Butter, Texas… Dum Dum Dugan's Avengers teambuilding exercise… how to celebrate your Panthers v. Red Knights… I MEAN VIRTUALLY ANYTHING!! I love this show and I tell everyone I talk about podcasts with to listen to it. -
Wow. See I have no memory of that, nor did I remember it being referenced any time before the lockers when he did it pretty heavily. I totally missed that. I've really come to like Bart, and the guy playing him, in these recent couple storylines. I was overly critical of him previously and the reason I asked when the timid dragon thing began was I wanted to know if I had missed some good stuff in the first 20 or so episodes. I’ve touched on this briefly before but I play Pathfinder regularly, I don't play Dungeons & Dragons (but really neither does the Nerd Poker gang - ha!). They took D&D 3.5, which was amazing, and improved it. However, even though I don’t play D&D I will scour the internet for any kind of podcasts devoted to either system. Whether actual play or just mechanics discussions & news I’m all about RPG entertainment right now**. There are Earwolf-type websites devoted to RPG podcasts that have dozens of different gaming groups playing various campaigns with upwards of 30 episodes per…but dammit, the podcasts I can listen to for more than 10 minutes are few and far between. Of all of them I can honestly recommend 4. Nerd Poker is the pinnacle of those. Simply put: I find it to be the best consistent-quality RPG podcast that I’ve ever come across. I look forward to this podcast every Wednesday morning and no matter what other podcast I’m in the middle of, I stop it and listen to the newest NP with BP&F. It’s special to me because of the crazy amazing storylines, character work of the players, and the quality of the sound recording. I shit you not - in the diaspora of RPG podcasts, finding one that doesn’t have a player Skyped in from the farthest reaches of Delfar-7 with appropriate time delay, a constant humming buzzing humbuzz, or sound like it was recorded in Bender’s shiny metal ass-hole automatically puts it in the upper 30%. Nerd Poker does the basics so well I can appreciate it for that alone but I don’t mean to sell its quality short by making it seem like just because it doesn’t suck its therefore good. You all have made a podcast that several people enjoy, enjoy discussing, follow weekly, and care about what happens to the characters within. There’s no better testament to the appreciation than the fan art pages. ** - I’ve thought about making a separate post on the forums discussing which ones I’ve found to be good and which I’d recommend. I think I’m going to do it and I’m hopeful some other Nerd Poker reply with their own favorites.

Oh man...Adomian just makes the world a better place. As soon as the boys left the room the 1st time, shit. got. real. The pace picked up and it was just roll after roll of battle. That creepy piece of shit old man confronts Mildred and her freaking out in the middle of it all not knowing friend from foe, that's a great little aspect to the story. Amarth got to slice and dice the empy robes one after another. There was lightning blasts, eldritch blasts, dragon breath Bilal blasts, and Sir Richard with the hand of god blasts. I have a question regarding Bartho Shett's timidity. I remember the episode in which the lockers were introduced and he was scared to check them out and hiding, so i know that's canon but I can't remember if he was played like that before then? Or is that where him being a Dragon-Chicken began?

Episode 96 — Jackie Robotson
Corky Kneivel replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
The first time I realized that was Frank Oz in the Blues Brothers checking Jake out of prison, I remember I thought it was scandalous that a muppeteer was talking about condoms “One….soiled”. Horatio & Bryan killed me all episode. I love when Matt hears the little throwaway stuff and puts them right into it like he did with Pussy Face at the bachelorette party and Pussy Face at the sex ed demonstration. Horatios “Hey who’ve you dated? Fugheddaboudid” was hilarious. I was wondering the same Andy/Andi question as Matt. This is the best podcast in the universe and my friends Hawkeye, Kneel, & Gash all agree with me. -
I agree with the positive response to this one, and also to the current storyline. For an episode with no fight, no chase, and no real baddies present this one didn’t lack for action. Amarth cracking the stone is going to be one of those memorable moments and I think would make for a fantastic drawing. I am digging the creepiness of their current location and foes, this is one of my favorite storylines of the campaign so far. I love how freaky the paintings and that old wizard knowingly letting them attack him from afar is, but I’m still not really getting the gist of the evirons from episode to episode. Just to clear up: is the old man in the adjacent room or at least what resembles the adjacent room? Or can he only be seen by whoever’s looking through a lens? Is the lens like a periscope or is it like a TV Screen? All the collectors they know are after them, how are they moving towards them?
-
That was cool. As obvious as it seems it was to most everyone else, especially Sara, I sure as shit didn't pick up on MIldred being under a spell at all. I liked Sir Richard's confidence earllier in the podcast then Bahamut makin ghim pay for his hubris with those miserable rolls. He couldn't even pray right.

BEST PODCAST IN THE UNIVERSE -
My daughters watch those guldurned youtube channels with people playing various games, first person shooters and such, and Mr. Sark was a guest on one of their favorites. It was something about an invisible ghost walking around killing ghost hunters. It was odd hearing his voice saying things besides telling people what they see and a Snagglepuss-inspired “come out to the coast, we’ll have a few laughs…”

Episode 90 — Bear Suit
Corky Kneivel replied to JulyDiaz's topic in improv4humans with Matt Besser
I haven't listened yet but I've loved each of Betsy Sodaro's appearances so far. Looking forward to it. I watched Freak Dance the other night - so fucking funny. I knew Matt Besser directed it the whole way through I just imagined it was one of the dancers people's stage show, I figured Dazzle for some reason, that was popular in LA and Matt just dug it and got it made. Like Bob Odenkirk did with Melvin Goes to Dinner. Surprised at the end to see he wrote it as well. Fantastic parodying of the "we gotta save the communtiy center" trope, and not only did it hit all the right notes...it covered all the bases and crossed every t. I's were woefully undotted, however.
