  1. Rightly reviled on all fronts.. my only issue.. I refused to watch it when a friend rented it and I'm sure not gonna watch it even for my favorite movie review cast. ;)

That said.. i did watch Tiptoes :( due to this cast... and my soul has been forever tainted.

  2. Hehe.. yeah is hard to get your head around a cast that celebrates the crazy in movie-making and not just the awfulness. So many times I have felt indignant at the movies inclusion only to remind myself that this cast is about enjoyment despite quality or reason.

I've had this movie recommended to me a few times so i guess i should get round to it sometime soon.

  3. This is creepy! I am watching Galaxy of Terror right this second.. the credits are rolling as i opened the page!

It was one of my first horror movies, a mate from school rented it for his birthday party on Betamax.. we watched in a dark room after games and cake and it freaked us all out!

A few years back i hunted it out as i could recall so much of the plot (maggot attack, shard under the skin, alien hands from under a walkway, tunnel veins attack) so much stuck with me. I even recall joking that was it one two-armed alien under the walkway or two one-armed ones. The sets were amazing for the budget, taking Alien as a massive reference but i loved how they mostly avoided ripping off the story and plot as Leviathan did. I had no idea who Sid Haig was back then nor that the marvelous Mr Englund was in it.

:) thats so cool that you mention the very film i was watching. :)

  4. Having seen and heard what an unlikable (insert sexual expletive of choice here) Guy Ritchie is i'm not surprised he doesn't spend time in front of the camera.. you know once he called Hare Coursing "Being in touch with nature".... Dick!

But yeah.. Luc Besson is by turns awful and wonderful. Fifth Element was crazy fun, even if it did inflict Jovovitch on us for decades to come, as was District 13, Léon, Nikita, The Transporter and one of my all time favorites Angel-A...

then he does Arthur and the Minimoys, From Paris with Love & Colombiana.. whatever his input the man makes movies with some flare and range to them and the worlds better for it.

BTW.. Guy Pearce amazing actor from such crappy beginning on AussieSoaps to the heights of some of the coolest movie roles ever.

  5. I recall when i was in school i used to have friends come over and and a bunch of us would watch movies i taped of late night satellite TV.

I'd watched They Live the day before and, after getting burned with the awfulness of The Exorcist ][ Heretic, I told everyone.. "Stick with it, just watch.. keep watching wait for this scene" As soon as the fist fight started, and seemingly never ended, everyone was sold. Absolute genius film making and proof you can make a really shaky movie with dodgy performances but have one standout feature and suddenly the value of everything else gets magnified.

  6. Oooh.. well my bad. I only vaguely heard about the movie second-hand (tee-hee second-hand) and assumed it was time travel.. I might have to see if i can get a copy as now i am interested!

Damn you HDTGM forums! So many bad movies.. so little time.

  7. Lets face it you can give Shakespeare to Fox and it would come out passionless and cliche... but all the same this movie was dire and you can only imagine the finished dialogue was probably more about what she stammered out on the day than what was written.

When it comes down to it the movie was just a visual wankfest for 13 year olds, who somehow don't have access to the internet, so dialogue was of least importance.

  8. Michael Crichton novels are a mixed bag.. sometimes the best stuff remains unfilmed and sometimes the idea just doesn't look as good on film as it did in your head.

But yes Sphere is particularly annoying.. you can almost feel in that end scene, when the actors are discussing the proposal, they are thinking just how pissed the audience will be when they see this.

  9. I liked the review on IMDB that said that they were constantly shouting No one is that dumb at the screen. :)

A pre-SAW Tobin Bell performance too... odd i wasn't aware i'd seen a Tobin in another film before SAW.. turns out he had a few bit-parts in famous movies I've seen just nothing memorable it seems.

  10. It is a movie to get angry at isn't it.. Angry that people made it.. and more than that, that someone wrote it and several other people said lets pay money to make it. If that was not enough add in some half decent actors whose agents liked it and got them to say yes to it.

You can only assume there was money involved or somehow every other page of plot, the ones with the original ideas on them, got lost and went unfilmed.

Even the worst action movie can get away with plot-holes and trite nonsense if there's action to distract you or an idea that's so good you'll go with it just to see how it will end. but here they didn't even try.. its made for TV level and lower.

I forgot why i watched it.. but it turns out that Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver were in it.. and i'm such a sucker for lot i find it amusing to see these two in the same show or film.

  11. Never worked as well as it should have for me.. some superb sets, a really interesting story, more than reasonable acting talent but the promise of the setup never really paid off.

To me it always felt like we were seeing the sequel to a really badass movie because the story of a ship travelling to 'hell' and itself being possessed and torturing the crew before finding its way back to our universe seemed like a far more interesting story with potential for effects and action. Instead we got an hour of wondering what happened and little evil going on (with now rather distracting cgi liquid effects) and then 40minutes of chaos telling you all the cool stuff you didn't see.

If they can prequel The Thing.. maybe they should do the same here and really make it tie up.

  12. I only became aware of this via the forums here in the last week.. and it is shockingly poor. This was criticized on so many levels for just being poor.. one big criticism from little people and doctors was the idea that the couple are afraid their child will be little.. When since neither are the chances are highly unlikely.. but that doesn't stop the movie ignoring the fact or have the characters find that out.. as normal human beings would.

I'm also shocked that Paul wont spring for 2 or 3 DVD's of a movie to make the show! ;)

  13. Leviathan is one of my favorite bad movies. You know how one studio develops a movie around a subject and another makes a remarkably similar movie to cash in.. well 1989 was the year of the underwater sci-fi/action/monster movie, when I believe 4 such movies were released and two the following year.

What sets Leviathan apart is it's wholesale ripping off of Alien and The Thing to create it's plot and monster.

The plot revolves around a deep sea mining crew who stumble across a derelict ship with holes ripped in it and when investigated they bring something back something that first infects and then hunts the trapped crew.

The crew mirrors Alien right down to the engineers, one white and one black, who complain about completion bonuses. They also have two females, one of whom strips to white undies in a small shower stall, and a tough male leader but interestingly no android or Jonesy!

The base interior is also Alien on a budget: dank pipe laden corridors, crisp lit futuristic medical bay, white panneled communal living areas.

Interestingly one crew member tries an escape hatch escape that mirrors the attempt to blow the alien out of a hatch in the novelization of Alien.

To spice things up they replace the Xenomorph with a 'The Thing' like monster, complete with body melding scenes and distorted body parts. They fear the monster is inside them even though they mostly trust each other, also they discover that human dead does not equal creature dead.

Hudson, Crenna & Weller predictably provide good performances and keep the plot going and well enough to make an enjoyable action/horror story. The effects are pretty decent and the monster effects work despite being pretty static when Alien and The Thing were anything but.

Watched in the light of two of the finest monster movies ever made the theft of ideas is staggering and fun to spot the pilfered elements so shamelessly used.

  14. Johnny Depp & Christoper Walken in a plot that gives 88 Minutes a run for its money.

Depp's daughter is kidnapped and he is ordered to execute a target within a few hours or his daughter dies. Walken is the evil recruiter who assigns the mission and constantly follows Depp to ensure he completes his task.

Unfortunately they choose Depp from a random crowd because he showed initiative in dealing with some punks hassling commuters and then surprise! he uses that ingenuity to befoul his tormentors plans instead.

The ridiculous things that happen are just stupefying and at almost every turn the plan would fall apart if anyone was good at their job. You know every decision he makes to break the deal that he will talk to exactly the wrong person. On top of this, because they can't trust Depp, Walken shadows our man by a few feet and constantly talks to him in public where there must surely be security and television cameras and also walks in and out of his bosses hotel room. At other times he inexplicable stands where he cant clearly see Depp. When he bumps into Charles S Dutton you just know he is gonna be our hero's only friend.

An assistant is loudly executed in the bosses hotel room for no good reason after which her story is over and disappears. When he confronts his target he spends the first few minutes talking like he is a killer instead of implicating his controllers as evidence of his crazy story.

At one point Depp falls in slow motion down multiple floors into a shallow lobby fountain and then moments later is back upstairs, totally dry. He then walks around the lobby and no one at all, even the staff to whom he talks, notice he's the guy who fell 4 stories and was pulled out of the fountain minutes earlier. Later he drops into the same pool from 1 story up and you can see the fountain water is about 2 feet deep, he is knocked unconscious and you'd believe drowned as no one comes to his aid, and again he apparently gets out without anyone being concerned and completely dry.

Depp's daughter is perfectly happy with her female captor, who is nice to her, and has no concept of stranger danger apparently.

It's one of those movies where action justifies everything but next to nothing makes real world sense.

  15. It was just so boring in it's steadfast belief that people who like the X-files would want a movie with no aliens, no monsters, no well defined antagonist, no black oil and only scant references to Skinner, Mulder's sister and best of all Mulder & Scully as a couple oh! and 100% more pedophiles... all the magic was there.

  16. Not to mention an abomination to the memory of the fantastic original which is superior in every aspect.

Wrote this in my anger on RottenTomatoes:

A sad boring mess that fails on every aspect of storytelling that the original movie nailed. The effects are bland and Worthington's Perseus is a characterless moron who does nothing to deserve either his reputation nor the audiences sympathy when his epic tasks seemingly just fall into his lap with minimal effort.

The arrogance of Perseus to Bobo the Owl, the original films character, shows the contempt the creators have for their source. It's sad when a 20 year old movie's stop motion characters has more screentime and personalty than this.

As if that is not enough they spit on mythology with a rote ending that sees our hero hooking up with his own ancestor in a suggested incest. Genius!

  17. It was massively over-hyped too. I always found Ann Rice rather messy as an author whose grand ideas always suffered from long tracks of nothing in the middle of her work. The first 100 and last 100 pages are great but there's always a pile of slog through chapters.. and the movie felt like a lot of those parts weighed even heavier.

It was a shame that Aaliyah never got to prove herself beyond her early, ill advised performance. You imagine they knew they needed someone with credibility, who is not unattractive, for the leads but they thought of little else.

  18. It was an interesting character choice for a name and they do make it a minor conversation point which is something i don't recall in another action movie.. everything in the plot and script did smack of trying that bit too hard.

I think the car chase sequences weren't too bad.. but that was it.

The finale is supposed to be a huge steel plant fight but even that ends up looking messy with a slow and silly final fight kill.

It works if you are ready for 80's cheese but on a technical level you can see it was a troubled production.

  19. Yeah Superman III was an experience i recall being confused by it after enjoying the first two to a reasonable degree... but as an adult you really get to appreciate the bizzareness of it all. I do recall the rapey Superman bits being particularly confusing and not at all what I wanted from a one dimensional, inspirational and a relentless embodiment of ethics that is Superman.

And yeah.. poor Pamela Stephenson.. she came off badly in an incredibly stupid role.. Sexy in an 80's poodle perm way and then reduced to tinfoil covered buffoonery.
