  1. It took me a second to figure out, but Paul singing Chicago was the clue I needed to realize that Rich (or Rick if you prefer) was the guest on episode 1601 of Never Not Funny which is shown as having the date of February 12, 2015 on the Earwolf website.

Why would they record the same day? Isn't NNF recorded pretty far away at Matt's studio?

  2.

I couldn't quite tell if they were kidding or not. If it was serious, my best guess is the day Harris Wittels died? That was Feb 19 2015, and the show premiered April 1st 2015, just over 5 weeks later, and I think PFT once said he did about 11 episodes before releasing the first one, about two a week. (RIP HARRIS)

EDIT: Never mind, I'm wrong, it was Feb 12 2015, according to the picture from the book.

Yeah it started to sound serious at one point, but could not tell. So this was recorded on Feb. 12, 2015?

  3. Howl's web site is infuriatingly useless. Can someone who subscribes to Howl explain this to me?

I want to listen to the HGTGM Birdemic episode on my iPod nano. I don't have an iPhone, and my Android phone is on a limited data plan (so no streaming) and has limited storage space (so no downloads, and actually I don't even have enough room to download another app). The iPod Nano is not an iOS device, so I can't use anything that requires an app.

QUESTION: If I sign up for howl.fm, will I be able to download the Birdemic episode and play it on my iPod Nano?

Paul mentioned Dan Carlin's podcasts in the announcement. You can buy all of Dan Carlin's old episodes individually (which I have done). Is there a way to buy individual HDGTM/Earwolf podcasts that doesn't require an iPhone or Android app?

    From what I understand, no.

  4. So, During the paywall announcement paul made it sound as though one could download the episodes. I started my $5 per month account (I'm not paying for a year of this fucked idea up front) and I cannot download the episodes from the howl site. I'm sure there is software which will make this possible, can anyone make a suggestion?

Also, my two cents. I'm only surprised that Jason went along with this. I really thought he would have a line in the sand on this. That earwolf would do this, that paul would "be a company man" as he himself stated but I'm really surprised that Jason would buckle. It's not like he needs this, he was/is doing this because it's fun. Not even really disappointed but I am surprised.

You have to use the app to download I think. I only use the app on my phone and there is just a little download icon.

  5. I want to be clear when I say this, as I can tell this is corporate greed and not because of the hosts of the show which have nothing but respect for.

This is BS. One of the biggest shows on earwolf is this one. This is entirely greed based and not "because other shows do it." I do subscribe to shows I lovery. The way this was handled was awful and now I will never pay a dime for their subscription services. Horrible horrible way of handling something like this.

I still have all respect for the hosts and will listen to new episodes still... assuming they aren't pay walled too.

Not cool at all Earwolf. Not cool.

The company supplied us with free shows for, what is it now? Five years? Taking the burden of all the costs upon themselves. But now that they can't shoulder the burden alone anymore it's 'greed'. GTFO.

all I have to say about pay wall... and Paul Scheer, you are Earwolf, not the other way around. you could move your show to any site and we will follow you. Please don't forget that for one minute.

Mind you I think you did that before, or did I dream it. Earwolf pop.

any other show this marketing method could work, but with HDTGM we already have to buy the videos or movies to enjoy the show already if da pay wall came with the movies in question for free maybe I would buy into that system but we have to go out of our ways to find and collect these movies to watch them and enjoy the show. didn't enjoy giving some guy on amazon 40 dollars US to enjoy the apple. a movie i will most likely never watch again. I would of rather give that money to you Paul. No real amazon rentals here in Canada.

Isn't Paul part of the ownership? I thought he got a stake in all of this when the Howl stuff was announced? Am I just making that up? I remember a time period when it was announced that Paul was now a bigger stakeholder of Earwolf etc?

  7. Really weirded out by the number of commenters hoping for failure for Earwolf. I get the disappointment in having to pay for something that previously was free, but the idea that you should get things your way or they should fail is very sad and gross.

Also, listening to ads is a meaningless way to "support" a podcast if you aren't buying the product. If you're balking at $3 a month, how many $700 mattresses can you buy in a year? How many $25 pairs of underwear? Any $60/week Blue Apron subscribers out there? Advertisers don't give a shit about your whining on forums, they care about revenue. How many podcasts are Casper/Warby Parker/et al sponsoring, hundreds? A thousand? How much do you honestly think they are paying for indie web comedians to read some copy?

Yeah, some of these comments are fucking gross.

  8. It's not that they don't pay for the ads if people don't sign up; it's more likely that they pay per thousand impressions (in this case, per 1k people that listen to the episode). BUT, any advertiser is going to keep track of the ROI (return on investment) of their ad spend. So, let's say they spend $2500 (a number I pulled straight out of my ass), but they're only getting $1500 in revenue from it (that could be in direct signups for a subscription service like Blue Apron; it could be in a calculated lifetime value - LTV; or it could be a single purchase), they'll probably not continue advertising.

Now, the point remains that if people don't buy stuff, Earwolf will probably lose ad revenue over time, but it's just a slightly different model. Source: I work in Marketing and used to help manage our PPC/CPM advertising budget.

Note: this is just an assumption based on common advertising models. I don't have any inside info on Earwolf, their advertisers, or how any of their contracts are structured.

    Interesting stuff.

  9. I get this, it's pretty fair, but the argument that, uugh well if you want ad-free content you can't expect it for free. BUT these podcasts or chock-full of ads. Like HDTGM has more ads then any podcast I listen to. With this level of downloads can we be expected to believe they make nothing off that?

Most of the ads only pay if people actually go and buy the product. That's why they have the promo codes in each one. So if someone goes to the site, does the free trial or whatever and then enters the promo-code, then they get something. Do you think everyone is doing that that is listening to the episodes?

  10. That beard story makes my skin crawl every single time I hear it.

A side note, and I'm sure something I'll get a lot of shit over...it always bothers me how much male comedians talk over female comedians on podcasts. There was an example here where LL was asked a question and then before she could finish her first sentence in response each of the three male guests took a turn interrupting her. It always bugs me. Happens a lot on HOW DID THIS GET MADE. Oh well, I'm sure I've just kicked a hornets nest for no reason.

  11. HI, I couldn't find a Rules section to check, so I thought I'd check here. I've tried adding a profile pic and post a Youtube video in a reply, and couldn't do either. Is this because I've a newish member? When could I expect to do either, is there a post count number I need to hit to do so? Thank you very much.

No idea on either, I'm just here to tell you your name made me literally lol.

  12.

Even easier economics lesson, taking advantage of the example provided. This is half the price of Netflix. The shows on Netflix cost hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars to make per episode. A podcast costs maybe a hundred bucks, covered by donations and ads. We are obviously getting crap value for our money. (Again, my issue here isn't the cost, it's the greed and going against the content creators' wishes, but don't try to make this sound like some great value.)

'Greed.' You call giving us free content for, what? 7 years? Then announcing 2 years ago that things are going behind a paywall, finally doing it (I think more than a year later than they said they were doing to do it) but still keeping all current things free and 6 months back free....is greedy? And, as they already pointed out, they take down episodes when asked to. So, maybe at some point some of the creators will say (like Jeff Garlin did) remove my stuff. But to call this 'greed', is just baffling.
