  1. Actually, at one point I was a die-hard Jay-Z fan but I find it so hard to get excited about his new output that I haven't even listened to MCHG yet (and I defended Blueprint 3 a LOT.) That doesn't mean I'm not still going back and bumping Reasonable Doubt. Killer Mike, Underachievers, Doppelgangaz, Captain Murphy and a lot of others are making hip-hop that is both "more interesting" and also catchier as music to me these days. And Just Blaze (the best producer Jay-Z ever had, including Kanye) is producing the next Slaughtahouse album, so no way am I going to miss Royce over Just Blaze beats.

That said, you shouldn't NEED a mash-up to listen to the Black Album, because that shit is still awesome, but some of the remix versions were really good (Danger Mouse's wasn't my favorite. DJ Kno had a great one.)

Oh and I expected to hate that Mac Miller album but I don't.

  2. I've noticed Scott enjoys the expressions "burying the lede" and "gilding the lily" both quite a little bit. Does he always use them correctly? I couldn't say; I'm not sure what they mean.

I'm not sure what gilding the lily means, but burying the lead refers to telling a story without starting with the most important/interesting fact.

  3. Don't really care about this topic, but yet another classic example of Andrew Ti's ... interesting ... views on music.

    1) Rock is only for white people.

    2) The blues is wack.

    3) "That album's gotta be 30 years old, so why listen to it any way?" Because, of course, you should only listen to something within a few years of its release.

  4. pfchangs nailed it; fetishizing other races is certainly a form of racism, but I think Andrew dropped the ball when he tried to frame this debate in those terms.

I don't think it's necessarily about fetishizing the race as much as it is, "I have a bunch of money, am white and older and have no game and there is a part of the world where I don't need game and by being white and having money I can be with attractive, younger women." That's not fetishizing a race, that's just sizing up an opportunity.

edit: In other words, it's not necessarily that they are fetishizers in this scenario, but taking advantage of a part of the world in which they are the fetishizees.

  5. Happy to see some dissenting opinions to the negativity that I assumed was coming when I saw how many comments this thread had. All three participants were clearly having a lot of fun, and we got to know more about the wonderful enigma that is Howard Kremer. Not every guest is going to be Paul F. Tompkins, so I don't see any reason to react negatively to someone just because they bring a different vibe and aren't good at improv games. I probably wouldn't enjoy hanging out with GC for a night of his chosen activities either, but I have no problem being invited to listen to a podcast where he's doing (maybe) half of the talking.

When I see a thread with this number of responses, I usually figure it starts with some negativity, then some "yeah really" agreement negativity, then one or two people being like "Whoa hold on" and then more people being like, "Yeah come on!"

  6. I haven't listened yet - should I just wait for my Whooch fix until the VPN live show and Twooch on Friday?

Nah, I mean, the guy's at least talking to Howard and Kulap so there's plenty of them if you don't end up liking the guy. Oh and Kulap looks great in the group photo, so whatever that X-fit is doing is pretty good.

  7. I saw this movie as a child, and I was horrified. Since then I've spoken to MANY people who like it. Are they goddamn insane? This movie destroyed my confidence in authority figures. I too had a very visceral reaction to it and frequent nausea, especially to the Judge. I'm gonna go call my therapist now. I think I just had a breakthrough.

I haven't seen it, but the description you just gave does not necessarily scream "bad movie" to me.
