Heartwarming story. It really makes me appreciate my boringly healthy kids. Speech therapy works. I had to do it in grade school- gave up recess for years to have time for sessions. I was a bit of a stutterer and had an Ira Glass L, but mostly I just talked too fast. Basically, I was a spaz. A few years later, I went on to become the captain of my high school's speech team and worked in "easy listening" radio for a while. I'm still a spaz, though.

I was secretly hoping that Vicky would post some weird political non sequiturs on this board. That would be fun.

It is logically impossible for all gypsies to be thieves. If that were true, Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" would simply have been titled "Gypsies and Tramps," which would have been a stupid, stupid title for a song. If we postulate that it is impossible for Cher's music to be stupid, the whole idea falls flat and the phrase "gypsies are all thieves" is offensive not only on racial grounds but also on the basis of pure logic. Also, did you know that the phrase "tongue in cheek" comes from the propensity of Cher impersonators to say things in a jokey or sarcastic tone? This is not actually true, but the alternate universe in which it is true is probably a little more interesting than this one.

The worst Young Ones was the episode after the finale because it doesn't exist. I miss The Young Ones *spreads arms out wide* this much.

So, I sat down and mulled it over and I've discovered that it might work. Hurray for Casey Wilson!

I would love to hear Yo Is this Sexist? but part of me thinks that the episodes would be 3 hours long. That part of me, of course, is horribly sexist. I am a terrible person.

This is fascinating. I appreciate you putting this up on Earwolf even though it doesn't seem to fit neatly with the rest of the shows. I freelance on the side mostly just for the adventure of it. The idea of starting a business to do what I do is intriguing, but crossing that threshold is terrifying. Money is one (small-ish) issue, but finding people to hire who both know what they're doing and are committed enough to actually do it is a serious hurdle. I've been experimenting with micro-businesses, collections of freelancers who glom together to complete a project (exclusively over the web) and then disperse. I've had better luck with that than with actual butts-in-seats hiring. Even though I don't think I'm ready to make that leap, but the discussion is really interesting.

On the college vs. business quandary - I know it's a weaselly sort of answer to say "both" when given a multiple choice question, but I really think that's true. Kids need to go to college and they also need to get real experience well beyond the banal, surface-level stuff they might find in internships and the like. The model for success has changed so much in just 2 generations. It used to be that you could climb a ladder of institutions- the right school, the right starter job, and on and on. These days, those institutions are faltering, and it's up to young people (and old 40-somethings like myself) to create our own tiny institutions, our own brands, in order to make something sustainable both financially and creatively. The blogging & podcasting phenomena have revolutionized journalism and comedy. (And isn't journalism a form of comedy?) People are starting thousands of mini businesses and ad-hoc agencies to make things happen on their own terms and for their own reasons. In a generation, this notion will be commonplace. So, how to prepare our kids? All along, I've been telling my 10yo son and 15yo daughter that they need to "make their own fun" as they grow up. My 15 year old is proficient in WordPress coding and took her first freelance job this summer (so proud!), and my 10 year old wants to start his own comedy site. At the same time, I've been saving for college since before they were born-- because as important as that entrepreneurial spirit is, I have to ensure that they have the liberal arts foundation that I think is vital to being a citizen and a full participant in the culture. While I completely agree with your sentiment about the over-valuation of college in the minds of many people, I think the two go hand in hand. One without the other leaves a young person at a grave disadvantage in a constantly-changing landscape. I'm going to stop typing now.

I'm surprised Werner didn't instantly go for the port-a-potty due to a life-long interest in making elemental phosphorus in the 17th century fashion by super-heating large quantities of urine. I imagine Werner would have been overcome with child-like glee at the opportunity to get his hands on so much of the stuff. Glowing... stinky... phosphorescent art.

As a dude, I used to feel weird wearing my son in a sling when he was little but it was great to get stuff done and carry him around back when he was tiny and portable. Looking back it was silly to feel weird about it. He's 10 now and is amazing in a million ways. - I'm grateful for any stretch of uninterrupted time to concentrate- to read, to work. - I'm grateful to work in a "creative" industry that allows a teensy bit of flexibility when it comes to rescuing sick kids from school after they recreate the green puke scene from the Exorcist all over the school nurse. - I'm grateful to live in an era that expects more of dads. - Since starting down the dad road in 1997 I've neglected friendships from college, etc. and I'm grateful for the ones who still return my phone calls. - I'm grateful for anything at all that makes me laugh, and that includes a half dozen Earwolf offerings. - I'm grateful that Barry's post reminded me to edit this post to include my list
