What's funny is the studio has been saying that they have a Comanche representative on the set to help them. I'm laughing thinking to myself that they are just saying that because Johnny Depp is saying he's maybe a Native American.
-
I am bumping this thread after seeing how badly is getting beat by both Despicable Me 2 and critics. With a current RT score of 22%, the controversy of Depp's Native American ancestry, along with DM2 doubling its box office on opening day, I am gonna go out on a limb and say this will be the biggest bomb of the summer if not the year. With a 215 million budget and the bad word of mouth, I don't think it will break even let alone make a profit. I can see them doing this episode in the way that they did After Earth as a summer bust, and it would be great to dissect this shit storm. Also hearing Johnny Depp talk about now how he believes he's Native American from maybe a great grandmother. He doesn't even fully believe his own story anymore.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

You mean like the two leather clad guidos who have car troubles, one of whom gets a road flare jammed down his throat, or the waitress fuck buddy for the guy who dropped Tommy Jarvis off at the house in the beginning. -
The new Saw - Paranormal Activity. I've never seen movies where they go so far just to fill in why there is a camera there in the first place.

The thing about horror movie franchises with a unique premise is that the first one or two movies can really make you think about that premise or what you would do in that situation, then after 3 or 4 sequels it becomes super watered down. Nightmare on Elm Street had the premise of never knowing what was real or a dream until Freddy attacked which ultimately devolved into figuring out why he was able to do what he did when it really wasn't important to the overall franchise. Saw made you wonder what you would do in a situation like what the victims were being put into, until becoming a gorefest and a message for universal healthcare. This movie was interesting to think about whether or not you would join in on the Purge or if you would believe in the ritual. Right from the get-go, the Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey believe in the Purge and the "good" that it does for one reason or another, while their douchebag kids aren't as sure. And while it's technically peaceful for 364 days and 12 hrs throughout the year, we as the viewer can see the threads of hatred that are lying beneath which ultimately comes to a head near the end of the movie. It was a very interesting thing to see in a modern horror movie genre which either goes towards gorefest, remake, or PG-13 dreck that is meant to scare only tweens and have hipsters talk about as if it was the scariest movie ever made.

It's definitely worth a rental, especially if it usually isn't your cup of tea. The opening credits for the movie really set up possibilities for sequels as it's security cam footage, both old news footage and stuff shot for the movie, that creates a real sense of dread as people are killing each other on the street in gruesome fashion, all in the name of patriotism.
-
It wasn't bad, but it did devolve into just a home invasion movie at the end. I wanted to kill the fucking kids in that movie as they were actively trying to get themselves and their family killed. The premise was very interesting to see play out as it seemed realistic as to how it was handled with groups that were for and against it. And with the underlying theme of people using this event to display their patriotism as well as class standing, it worked well to make a creepy vibe. It wasn't the greatest horror movie, but it at least tried to be original for the most part and with the announcement after the opening weekend that there will be a sequel, I'm interested in seeing where the creators take it, especially if the director's have the sequel set out in a non-upper class area where there aren't guarded houses stocked with guns, but rather in an urban setting out in the open.

Or his speech about how he wants to run around naked covered in green Jell-O, and saying it as if that's what we all did back in 1997.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

Idk New Beginning wasn't that bad outside of it not actually being Jason as the killer. It's more insulting that this nobody of a ambulance driver was able to rack up a larger body count in a movie than Jason had up to that point. -
I really liked this movie unironically. It was the part in the franchise where everything that has happened had to be the result of demonic forces, similar to how Freddy Krueger got his powers from three dead flying fish. It seems every major horror franchise has a film like this, Michael Myers had a similar one where some cult was behind his power and Leatherface and his family were working for the Illuminati. Other cliches that horror movies seem to have are the killer having a psychic/physical link to the main protagonist (Nightmare 2, Halloween 4/5), a space movie (Jason X, Leprechaun 4), and a movie and "final film" (Jason goes to Hell, Final Nightmare, Friday the 13th: Final Chapter). What I also loved about the movie that the directors stated they purposely went for the at that time record for most squibs used in a single scene, which was the posted scene in the beginning.

It's the modern twin movie to the Great Gatsby remake where wealthy people have batshit crazy lives. I honestly think Scorcese decided to try coke while filming a movie.
-
I was more confused when Priest came out a bit later with Bettany again in the role of action hero against supernatural forces. There are just some people who shouldn't play badasses.

Yeah if I remember correctly, and quickly browsing through its wikipedia page, the whole thing was an experiment by "those who control the lightning" so it's up for the viewer to decide if that is an alien or heavenly force. For the most part nearly everything that was done in the Twilight Zone episode is in the movie: family gets box and are told if they press it they get money and someone they don't know dies, they contemplate that difficult choice but ultimately press the button, they have the box taken and are told it will be given to someone they don't know. It's all of the superfluous additions that make this a lame movie. It worked in the Twilight Zone movie as they were small sections that gave just enough to keep the audience happy, stretching a 23 minute show into a just shy of two hour movie proved to be excruciating. I would have been happier if the movie was honest like this:

It somehow involved aliens, a giant government conspiracy, and a crippled Cameron Diaz.

Ah the only other major movie starring child star turned porn star Scotty Schwartz. I remember they did an interview with Schwartz's mother where she talked about this movie. She said that Gleason hated kids and despised working with them, so much so he decided to humiliate Scotty by improvising during the final scene where he was taking him to military school. Schwartz, who had memorized the entire script, didn't know what to do and would then be mocked by Gleason for not being able to adapt to the changes.

Mr. Brooks is probably his best since JFK as it's such a different role for him playing a methodical serial killer with a split personality. William Hurt as the personality works great with him and the movie is good for what it was going for, plus it doesn't hurt that Costner kills Dane Cook with a shovel. The only other thing that I have like him in since JFK was 3000 Miles to Graceland as it's a total guilty pleasure movie for me and deserves its own episode on the show.

I found out about the interview after reading a cracked article on him, which shows how into his work he is, sometimes too much so. http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/the-3-manliest-things-ever-done-by-werner-herzog-or-anyone/

Easy to get mixed up. Though to be fair, Herzog continued an interview after getting shot, Boll would have challenged the shooter to a boxing match.
-
Yeah it was apparently so over the top to where it was like out of a cartoon. King had requested a whole bag of fake blood be used next to the dummy that was going to get crushed rather than a small squib pack, so when the dummy was run over it would leave a blood smear on the grass behind the steamroller. Unfortunately, the bag exploded to early and made it appear as if the head exploded. When it blew up it apparently looked like a Gallagher show. What's funny now is that even though King stated he would never direct again, some critics have recently gone on to say that King showed he had a talent as director, even though he was coked out like Tony Montana.
-
While not regarded, Uwe Boll spends his lives making movies and I think we can agree that he is certifiable.
-
Do you not think Herzog isn't batshit insane? What I was talking about was an interview between the two directors where Herzog pointed out the bacon on the wall as art.
-
Are you Werner Herzog?

I also like that while he does that, he pulled an Apatow and put his wife in a main role within the film.
