    After Earth

The twist didn't involve real magic, though that was a part of the movie, it was more about who was leading this group of magicians and why they were doing what they were doing. The movie is sort of like a 20 something Prestige.

    After Earth

Someone needs to slap him for that.

    Oblivion

As Pete Holmes said, Tom Cruise great runner, Al Pacino not so much.

    Oblivion

Agree completely. I think Cruise's public persona is weird, but I just get enjoyment out of many of his movies, mostly in a non-ironic way.

    Oblivion

No because I didn't want to see Cast Away in space.

    Oblivion

I didn't think it was too bad, had a feeling about Tom working for the wrong side but never saw the true twist coming.

    After Earth

Having just got back from seeing Now You See Me it was the right choice as that movie was pretty good. It had some decent humor and a decent twist to go in line with the overall theme of the movie, so much to the point that one bitch at the back of the theater was loudly expressing her disbelief. As far as After Earth is as much a error on the part of the Smiths as it is M.Night. Smiths for the fact that their inflated egos felt that they could make this movie, for the son's benefit no less, and basically act in front of a green screen and rake in the dough. Will was able to do it with I Am Legend because he can be a great actor when he wants to be. For M. Night this is the other of his two big cliches that he relies on heavily, the earth must be respected or it will destroy us or it can save us. Signs had the god awful twist of water being harmful to the aliens, Lady in the Water was about a civilization that broke off from man because they didn't respect water or some shit, the Happening was about plants getting revenge on people for not respecting the environment, and now this movie. I was actually surprised to see Gary Whitta's name attached to the screenplay along with M. Night as Whitta has had good work with Book of Eli and the bigger parts of the Walking Dead video game that came out last year.
  8. After just seeing the Super Bowl promo for this, this movie has to be done. Get Adam Scott back in here and discuss this batshit crazy movie.
  9. It's a pretty good movie if you can tolerate how fucking weird it gets. Imagine Twin Peaks and the X-Files on LSD.

    After Earth

Definitely, most analysts are saying that this should make around 30 million for the weekend, which is HORRIBLE for a June weekend premier, let alone one starring Mr. Summer Blockbuster Will Smith. Even if Furious 6 has a sale drop off of 50% it would still make twice as much as After Earth. Unfortunately, Will's ego has been getting bigger and bigger these past couple years so he is going to continue to buy movies for his kid to star in. Plus, he probably turned a lot of people off after saying he turned down Django Unchained because he felt he wasn't going to be the main character in comparison to Christoph Waltz, even though the character is featured throughout the whole movie, kills the villains, and has his name in the damn title.
  11. It's not unrelated in that it shows Han's continued life of crime though not as violent as in Better Luck Tomorrow.

    Insidious

I liked the first 2/3 of the movie where it was a decent haunting movie, but when it became "let's go into ghost world" I completely checked out.
  13. That's basically what it was. And Death Sentence had a super cartoony scene where Kevin Bacon drove his car into a van with a gang member in it and the van split in two right down the middle.

    Smokin' Aces (2006)

As I was rewatching it while writing the recommendation I saw the kid with an eyepatch who does karate and gets Ritalin boners, Jason would go apeshit over this!
  15. That's a very interesting choice for director as he doesn't have any real fast paced action credits to his name. Yeah he did Death Sentence but that was a slower paced movie in comparison to the Fast movies. I would have gone with Neveldine/Taylor or at least offered Lin a crapton more money to come back since these movies are super blockbusters.
  16. I love movie/TV facts/science like that. Sort of how like there have been over 700 head slaps throughout the series of NCIS or that Sigourney Weaver really made the overhead and behind basketball shot in Alien Resurrection.

    The Last Stand (2013)

Last thing I saw him in was Takers. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Keanu because he is great in the right role (Speed, Point Break, Street Kings, Matrix) but can be terrible/wooden in more serious spots (Dracula, any RomCom he does). Hartnett is the same monotone performance every movie, the only time it ever worked for him was when the character was meant to be that (Lucky Number Slevin, Sin City). Christensen just flat out sucks. Shit.

    The Last Stand (2013)

    Is Shia this generation's Keanu/Hayden Christensen/Josh Hartnett?
  19. The driver was a bad guy at times too. Always doing jobs for anyone who paid and even had a cameo in Collateral as the guy who gives Tom Cruise's assassin character his briefcase with his gun and hit list.

    The Last Stand (2013)

Exactly. I loved Rambo and Rocky Balboa as it showed Stallone was willing to play the old man, same for Gran Torino. I remember there being an interview with Clint after Harrison Ford flopped with Firewall or whatever, and said something along the lines of how it is sad how Harrison is still trying to act the young guy when it's not the case. He can't be throwing guys through windows or shooting machine guns while driving because it isn't realistic with how he was playing it. Now it seems that Harrison is finally playing the old guy roles and it works for him. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new Conan is, especially for Arnold's portrayal as a weary barbarian.

    Dead Man Down

I saw this when it came out and thought it was an okay revenge flick. I was more surprised about Colin Farrel's buddy being a super detective in figuring out who was killing the gang members, when for the whole movie he was a real idiot. Also, why was Armand Assante in this movie for a three minute scene?
  22. Justin Lin has actually gone on record as saying that Han is the same character and played by Sung Kang in his film Better Luck Tomorrow about a group of high schoolers who end up becoming a part of the crime lifestyle which leads to the murder of of a fellow classmate.

    The Last Stand (2013)

I loved this movie as it showed Arnold playing an older guy who can't do super fight scenes anymore (the final fight scene did take me out of the movie a bit because it was so against the grain of what the movie had previously been). He at least gets his limitations now and plays into that, unlike Stallone who still thinks he can hang with the young guys and be tough *cough* Bullet to the Head *cough*.
  24. That will be the twist for Fast 7, Ian Shaw (Statham) will have her as his "in" to the group to where he was able to kill Han and get in contact with the others. Oh and did anyone else notice that they did the same thing that they had done with Fast 5 where to establish that they were in Brazil they constantly showed the giant Jesus statue, but for England they showed that giant Ferris Wheel?
