Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

This is why I loved Tropic Thunder so much in that it called out Oscar Bait for being what it is. I'm sure The Post is a fine movie, but how it's being promoted might as well say "fuck you, give us the statue." It's why seeing performances like Viola Davis for The Help or Michael Keaton for Birdman lose out to biopics is so disheartening, because those performances were utterly amazing and deserving of accolades, but because they were either respectively against Streep and a biopic about Steven Hawking, they were SOL. That's not to say those factors always win, but they do seem to do so more than other kinds of roles. I'm hoping that Franco can pull out the win because it's a great story to sell as it's by proxy giving an award to a guy who tried to live the dream of making an award winning film and ended up making one of the worst films ever, and it's a combo of a movie film and biopic, so it could be enough to give Franco the Oscar. Also, I may be alone in this, but I don't know if Franco would make a good guest on the show as listening to Paul interview him he was bouncing all over the place with excitement, which I feel make for a scattershot episode, similar to how Kevin Smith was bouncing around in the Wild, Wild, West episode.

    HDTGM and the Oscars

I can see Franco get at least a nomination because his performance is getting mounds of praise, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Gary Oldman get the win. Because if there is anything the Oscars love giving awards to more than films about the arts, it's biopics.

Also I need a gif of Franco as Wiseau dancing to "Rhythm of the Night" in order for my birthday vacation to be complete and I am praying that a special feature for the home video release is a shot-for-shot remake of the film starring The Disaster Artist cast.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I was surprised that they completely cut out the fact that there were two full casts for this film, and that Sestero was basically the third person asked to play Mark, rather than him just being given the part by Tommy. They made a slight hint to it with Tommy firing Paul and Seth Rogen before the trip to SF, but it is WAY more bonkers in the book with how Greg has to handle all of that shit. I was also kinda put off by I not only recommend reading Greg's book but also The Ultimate Guide to the Room which goes way in depth to the making of the movie and interviews a lot of people involved with the movie, some obviously very bitter towards Tommy. I got the same thing from the book as it seemed Greg was trying to separate himself from this person, who while he had helped him was also trying to leach off of the success that he was able to find in life. I think anyone in that situation would be exhausted, more so with a person like Tommy. I'm alsosalivating to see both I, Tonya and The Shape of Water because both look incredible. That's the movie I think will play possible ruiner for this movie simply for the fact it's a Spielberg film starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep about historical political moments, which would be really unfortunate as this year Best Actor should be either Franco or Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour as both transformed themselves into their respective roles.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

I guess with it being a weird movie about making a movie they just decided to throw in any old trailer. Okay so you had the same set of trailers that I got. Also, they had Jackie Weaver as Claudette, so they had bigger roles than TWO Oscar nominees. I have to assume it was a rights issue with the Talented Mr. Ripley, because they had posters for Th13teen Ghosts and Bait, but they somehow couldn't get one for that hunk of crap. I was kind of bummed that they made it seem like Tommy just fired out a script and that was the movie, as this was originally an 800 page book that Wiseau had written that he meant to turn into a play before making it a screenplay, hence the one off line about Johnny possibly being a vampire, which was supposed to be the big twist ending for the movie.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

Yeah watching the movie I was reminded of the episode of the podcast and various interviews Sestero has given over the years about Tommy and the film and the June monologue was almost directly pulled from the episode where Sestero and she talk about how it's most likely a biographical film, and while not the actual reason I liked seeing a backstory to why Mark's face was shaved in the movie, which Sestero referenced during the podcast as their being an ulterior motive to why that happened. I also get that they had to cut stuff to fit into a two hour runtime, but I would have liked a bit more shown that Sestero did have a few film roles to his name before The Room, which added to the obsession Tommy had for wanting the "big career" that he felt his friend had. And Fister, what kind of trailers did you have before the film because I had the weirdest combination from A Wrinkle In Time to Blockers and Winchester?

So I'm kinda ticked after going to the Avengers STATION exhibit in Las Vegas as my tour guide basically spoiled in Infinity Wars, which was only being guessed and teased at, the exhibit also teased at a new Avenger member in the next film with a under wraps display, so I'm assuming either Black Panther or Spider-Man become a member officially or since Brie Larson's name has shown up in the cast list on IMDB, maybe Captain Marvel, so I'm hoping it's in the stingers if not part of a hail-mary to defeat Thanos.

See this is why I'm glad I'm in charge of media purchasing for my library, since I make sure we get either new or used that are like new from reputable sellers. And yes, we do have The Room along with numerous HDTGM favorites.

Episode 177 - The Disaster Artist

Yeah it had a good beginning, but I was given immediate pause for concern with Morgan Freeman narrating psycho-babble bullshit over images of animals fucking. I'm also starting to wonder if Johansson is the female version of Keanue, where she is great in a very small wheelhouse of films that play to her strengths, but her strengths appear to just be wooden acting in films that don't play to that wheelhouse. Under the Skin worked because the character has no real understanding of human emotion and is guessing at it, she's not bad in Ghost in the Shell as she's playing a robot, and near the end of Lucy she's doing a very robotic take but it's overshadowed by the bonkersness of the plot. In regards to The Disaster Artist, I just saw it this afternoon and fucking loved it. It definitely helps to have seen The Room before seeing this though you don't have to have read Sestero's book, but it would help as the tone might not be what you're expecting with the subject matter, especially as it's sorta promoted as a quirky underdog story. I do appreciate that they included the fact that Tommy had a very "Single White Female/Talented Mr. Ripley" relationship with Sestero, and I was surprised that a cult movie could have such a following that a film about the making of it could include multiple A-listers and Oscar nominees, some in roles that barely go past a minute. Franco steals the show as Tommy, and at times looks and sounds exactly like him to an eerie effect. Unfortunately, I can see him losing the Best Actor Oscar because the Academy would feel the need to give it to Tom Hanks just because he's Tom Hanks in a "based on true story" drama, similar to how Viola Davis lost to Meryl Streep because she was in a biopic.

Having listened to The Room episode when it originally came out, it's fun to realize that that episode basically set up the hosts being in The Disaster Artist. I am kinda bummed that while I'm on vacation next week for my birthday I'm going to see The Disaster Artist, but there are apparently no midnight showings of The Room, as I would love to see it in a theater at least once.

I love how Marvel has basically made this trailer for everyone, even those who can't hear the trailer while sneaking a peek at work. You can literally watch that trailer and get the basic idea of what's going on without hearing a single word said. Unfortunately, the reaction to the trailer from some comic nerds about Thanos makes me hate being a comic nerd. The character looks almost pulled from the pages of a comic, but because he is shown not wearing his helmet for 100% of the trailer people are losing their fucking minds, that along with what his chin looks like, which mind you has ALWAYS looked like that. Also this...just cuz.

Episode 176 - The Jazz Singer: LIVE!

I could not fathom why they didn't play jazz AT ALL during this movie. They played basically every other genre except for jazz and rap, even his backing band wasn't playing jazz in the beginning of the film. I assume the change happened because Diamond was cast, but who honestly could they have had in mind if not for him?

    Death to Smoochy (2002)

I fucking love this movie because of the twisted premise along with a completely unhinged Robin Williams just allowed to go nuts on screen.

Coppola was also an uncredited director for the 2000 shitfest Supernova. I think it's safe to say that Coppola hasn't made a great movie since Peggy Sue Got Married.

I loved Bone Tomahawk as well, though was pissed that it became Prime free after I had already bought the DVD. I was incredibly surprised by this film in that I was not expecting it to switch tone and become a grindhouse film midway through, even though Vaughn plays it perfectly straight throughout the film. This is one of those films where I'm thinking to myself that I shouldn't be enjoying this as much as I am, but Vaughn's performance really is the deal sealer for me. Add to it that the trailer really doesn't reveal ANYTHING about what to expect from this film and it's a great watch.

    Episode 175.5 - Minisode 175.5

Jane was a good representation of the mid 90s Punisher with a slight dash of Ennis' early run of the character in that he was willing to kill but went in a roundabout way of doing it, as the Punisher had to with content limitations of the 90s. Dolph Lundgren's version was sort of a starting point to what would appear in Punisher comics in the 90s and 2000s, but otherwise was a mess. Stevenson was a perfect representation of the MAX version of the Punisher in that he's being waging his war for decades and sees the world in very stark black/white contrast but can understand the gray when needed to. Bernthal is a mix of Jane and Stevenson in that he's more bleak and reckless as his family was recently killed, but he's still a finely tuned fighting machine wanting to strike out at those who go against him. I thought that was a good short, but there is no way that the Punisher would allow the assault to occur against that woman for as long as it did, if at all. The kid getting the shit beat out of him would have never happened, let alone with him watching it for minutes on end, as many times in the comics the Punisher has shown a soft spot for children and taking more extreme measures against those who harm them. I will admit that Ari Shankar has a real love for comics and making them feel authentic to the source material, Dredd being a prime example, but this short missed a bit of the Punisher's essence for me. As for him being charismatic, here he is showing Wolverine his standup skills: For those not wanting to Google, here's a Pine Marten

    Episode 175.5 - Minisode 175.5

I'm enjoying what I've seen so far, though I'm a bit biased as I've been a devout Punisher reader for since the 2001 regular Ennis run. In regards to the dreams, those have always been portrayed in the comics in a similar way as Frank's mind has warped over the years as he can't truly remember his family since he's been having his war for so long. His memories are usually a mix of Leave It To Beaver and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so it may not transfer as well to screen. Also, Bernthal is doing a fantastic job as the Punisher, though Ray Stevenson is still number one for me, though that could easily change. I also have to say that whatever the song was at the end of the first episode at the build site sounded like if Rammstein was asked to do a soundtrack for a Disney film, just terrifying. The scene also reminds me of a moment from Red Hood and the Outlaws where the team has to give a cosmic entity their worst memory in order to gain access to an ancient group of fighters. Red Hood (Jason Todd) in the end doesn't want the worst memory back in the end because he has new terrible memories to drive him towards justice, like dying at the hands of the Joker or being ressurrected by Talia Al Ghul. What's eventually revealed to be the terrible memory that drove him was a night when he was Robin and had a horrible flu, so he wasn't able to go out on patrol with Batman, whom Jason now blames for his death and that he was replaced by Tim Drake as Robin. Seeing that he's sick and in need of moral support, Batman decides to take the night off and keep Jason company with soup and a movie along with Alfred. It's a real shock of a scene as the entire volume of the paperback shows Red Hood with a vocal disdain for Batman and his tactics, but with his mind warped from the Lazarus Pit, even the love from Batman only created more hatred and anger in him.
