HDTGM movies and their RT scores

Then you also have the quote whores who basically give good reviews to bad movies only to get their quote and name featured in the publicity material for the film. Richard Roeper's book Schlock Value has an entire chapter dedicated to this and even features a bunch of famous whore quotes from over the years.

HDTGM movies and their RT scores

There are a bunch of instances where critics have been called out for being out of touch with audiences when it came to popular movies. There is a good clip on Youtube where Roger Ebert and some other critic whose name I can't remember are being interviewed about their thoughts on the Empire Strikes Back and while Ebert was like a kid giving a glowing review this bridge troll could not be bothered to find enjoyment in the movie. You also have Ebert who is notorious for going against the grain on his reviews and being roundly mocked for them (he gives a 3 1/2 star review for Anaconda but a 1 star review for The Raid: Redemption, seriously?) Then there's the case of Rex Reed who has become a target for online snipers due to him completely screwing up reviews for movies he most likely or completely did not see. If you want a laugh read his review of Cabin in the Woods and all of the fallout from that clusterfuck.

HDTGM movies and their RT scores

Yeah Jeff Rubin had once said on the Indoor Kids that pre-1995 movie scores might not be as accurate since there was no real way of tracking all of the reviews a movie got, like in the case with Double Dragon which had an incredibly low score that he felt should be slightly higher. Yet still, to get a 0% is something that really has to be worked for in a movie, and those mentioned certainly qualify for that awfulness.

    EPISODE 117.5 - Minisode 117.5

Apparently he found the Fountain of Youth along with Keanu Reaves who just turned 51 today.

    EPISODE 117.5 - Minisode 117.5

I loved It Follows because it caught the essence of 80s old school horror and I did like the twist on the old horror trope of now having to have sex in order to survive. To be fair I've liked the recent trend of making thrillers or horror movies in the vein of the 80s like Sleeper and to an extent The Guest, and It Follows did this really well as outside of a couple instances of technology, you really couldn't get an idea of whether this was set in present time or decades ago, which only added to the ambiguity of the movie.

    Bad Halloween Movies!

The reason the first half of Shocker works is because it's new ground for Craven before he turns it into Nightmare on Elm Street with TV. The other issue I had with the movie is Peter Berg isn't the best actor for serious acting because he just comes off as the doofy best friend.

    Bad Halloween Movies!

Or maybe the scariest Craven movie of all time: Music of the Heart.

    Garden State

The closest thing to bonkers might be the noiseless Velcro and Portman's "do a funny face/noise in a single spot," everything else just came off as quirk for quirks sake like the dad's dozens of degrees too Braff's shirt matching the wallpaper.

    Furious 7

I'm preemptively starting this thread because we all know this is going to be done the week it comes out in theaters next year. Not only is this going to have Jason Statham in it as the villain, but also Kurt Russel in a part that is supposed to play a major role in Fast 8. Also, that role was originally offered to Denzel Washington which only makes the mind race (pun intended) about how that movie would play out with the two time Oscar winner acting opposite Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. That would have LITERALLY be this decades version of the batshit insane face off of actors on different ends of the spectrum similar to when Max Von Sydow had a death scene while talking to Sly Stallone and Rob Schnieder in Judge Dredd. And maybe more importantly is the choice to have James Wan as the director of this movie. Seeing as he's almost exclusively directed horror movies (Death Sentence was the lone exception) it will be interesting to see how he follows up the success that the sixth movie was. I also want to see how he incorporates a saw motif into the movie as that has become his signature. Since I'm sure there will be a scene in Tokyo to follow up the ending of Tokyo Drift, I wouldn't be surprised to see a van designed to look like Billy the Puppet from Saw, similar how Bow Wow had a van that looked like the Incredible Hulk.

    Bad Halloween Movies!

In honor of the recently passed Wes Craven, I nominate Shocker for thi Halloween episode this year.
  11. Popeye's an interesting movie in that people expected it to work despite not grasping how it really couldn't transfer over from animated to live action. With how oddly shaped the majority of the characters are it was difficult to transfer that into real actors and also to make it sort of a musical was an odd choice. Also throwing in a giant octopus just because was an odd choice.
  12. 113, mostly the ones featured for this show and released in the last 30 years.

    The Fifth Element (1997)

I gotta bump this only for the fact that Funko has realized the love that this movie gets by creating a line of Pop figures for the movie featuring the key characters, and for Tucker's character they did give it the dick pompadour.

    Black Moon Rising

I got this movie after seeing its trailer on my Hell Comes to Frogtown DVD. This movie is batshit insane and even to this day I have no idea what it's completely about.

    Garden State

The problem with Bizkit though is that they really haven't evolved their sound AT ALL in the last decade, unlike other big bands in that genre like the Deftones, Slipknot, and Korn. I think you're spot on about WIWH being a perfect fit for a decade ago, but it came out in a time when we no longer find quirk so appealing.

Ah brownface Oscar winner Fisher Stevens, how we miss thee.

    Garden State

Wasn't the Portman storyline was the A story of the movie? I didn't think this was a totally terrible movie, but it was released in that set of years where everything indie had to have a bunch of quirky things in it, this and Juno being probably the two biggest offenders ("I'm talking on my cheeseburger phone," anyone?") Wish I Was Here was another prime example of Braff throwing in quirk for the sake of quirk with the line about getting a wig that was as interesting as his daughter or the neighbor being a furry costume designer. Yet I think this movie has fallen from the "WTF is this movie?" to "fuck this movie" level of response from people and in comparison to the movies the show has discussed, doesn't really fit.

    Christian Mingle: The Movie (2014)

Yeah but then you're going to have different versions of it and then you won't be able to get the true experience.

    Christian Mingle: The Movie (2014)

Makes sense because Dorn is the kind of guy who would have numerous steak and cake dinners.

    Striptease (1996)

Very true, I almost mistakenly wrote in my comment that Barry had written Striptease but then remembered that there was another author who wrote about the craziness that is Florida. Would have had to given up my MLIS in embarrassment if that happened.

    Striptease (1996)

I remember this movie being so incredibly hyped because Demi was going to be nude in it, but it was basically a couple quick flashes late into the movie and while it was a hit, I think it was pretty quickly forgotten. Though if they do this movie I would like it paired with another movie adaptation set in Florida, Big Trouble. When first seeing those movies it seemed ridiculous that these two movies made the state seem so insane, but with the last few years having crazier and crazier news stories come out of the state and things like Florida Man on Twitter, I can see know that these might be the most accurate movies ever made.

    The Number 23 (2007)

I like that unlike other threads this long in the forum, there really isn't a post longer than a couple sentences as this movie just sucks the life out of you as it did Carrrey's characters in the film. I just want to hear the show try and break down the dumbass version of inception like story within a story going on in this movie, because you have Carrey the dogcatcher, Carrey the storybook police officer/killer, and then Carrey the actual killer/crazy person. That alone would make this episode amazing, especially after the infamous confusion over the parents in Sleepaway Camp.
  23. Let's not forget the other staple of these movies where one of the main bad guys figures our Seagal is there and gives a speech about how badass he is that usually starts with "Oh no, Casey Ryback is here?!" The speech might as well end with "why don't we just kill ourselves now as to not make him angry?"

    Lifted

Holy shit I just realized that Lexi is the female Morgan Spurlock, career wise. Both were nominated for an Oscar very early in their careers (Spurlock with his first movie, Lexi with her second), then released a movie that was well received, but not as much as the prior (Spurlock with Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Lexi with Green Street Hooligans), then they do a comic book film (Spurlock with his Comic Con film and Lexi with Punisher:War Zone), and then they do a musical movie that no one gives a shit about (Spurlock with the One Direction film and Lexi with Lifted). Beyond that I do hope that Lexi gets back into better projects because her films like Punisher and Green Street show the kind of talent that she has. This really is proof that one bad movie can totally tank your career despite its failure being no fault of your own.

    Stigmata

I cannot wait to see how Jon Bernthal portrays the character. I have been following the last 15 years of Punisher stories from Ennis to Rick Remender to Jason Aaron and I was amazed at how much they Scoobyfied Thomas Jane's version. From the fake torture scenes to the overly complicated plot to turn Travolta against his wife, it just didn't seem like a Punisher film until the end where it basically recreated the final fight from Year One. Because these two are more fun to talk about than the downer of Stigmata.
