I just realized:Ā UnderworldĀ is likeĀ John WickĀ for goths, orĀ Fast & FuriousĀ for manic depressives.

Yeah but it fails at world building in such spectacular fashion while those have found the right formula to excel exceptionally well.

I never saw this film but have seen the others in the series and I realize that the prequel is easily the best of the series because it's Michael Sheen acting the fuck out of a horrible story and making it palatable. The first one is insane for how quickly they try to create a world filled with lore and backstory but try to focus on Kate Beckinsale being in a skin tight bodysuit. There are interesting ideas like getting memories from a person's blood, which was an idea introduced in the first one when the vampires are going to bring their next leader up to speed on current events after a hibernation period, but then they started using it every 10 minutes in the sequel and it was quick diminishing returns.

  2. What will always stick with me about this movie is when I showed it to a bunch of friends for the first time, they were completely shocked by what it was and asked how I found out about it. I told them I was highly recommended the film by the then children's librarian that we all worked with and they could not fathom how he could have seen this in the first place and then liked it enough to adamantly recommend it to me and apparently others.

I admit I wasnā€™t excited to see a political interview in my feed. I also didnā€™t listen because I donā€™t vote in LA. But I know a lot of people do. I thinkĀ itā€™s within Paul and Juneā€™s right to use their platform for, what they think, is the greater good. This is a free podcast. They donā€™t owe me anything,Ā

On the other hand, I also wonder what is about JUNEā€™s politics that is offensive? (Moreso than Jasonā€™s 9/11 jokes?) It is a fairly well-known fact that women run for office less than men do. Ā I think both partiesĀ could benefit from Juneā€™s book. I sincerely hope this isnā€™t another example of the forum complaining that Cameron Esposito is too loud, when Jason and Pete Holmes were also shouting. (And without knowing what is in other peopleā€™s hearts, I cannot know.)Ā

Wait 9/11 jokes are political? I must be doing them wrong.

  4. I've noticed recently a couple users popping up with random tangents like this and I'm just assuming it's just the same dude. In all fairness I concern myself with politics/law as little as possible since it's part of my day job, but even when this is brought up in the show, it's not at an amount to really take away from the overall content of the show. And if this is an honest question from OP, simply use Google and just start going down the result list until you find something more in line with what you want.

  5. So I will say I didn't watch this movie, but reading the Wiki for it makes this seem like the template for every rom-com where the characters have to have certain quirks to make sure the audience feels that they should not be together, They Came Together might as well be a parody of just thisĀ  film. As a librarian I can say that there isro no real reason Baldwin should be a big muckity muck just from microfiche. By this point in the 90s that type of product was small, especially in comparison to the wider used format of microfilm which could contain months of information on a single roll, while microfiche were flat singular sheets. Even then, microfilm were bought in massive quantities as most libraries would only really get microfilm of their local paper for local history preservation and maybe one national paper if the budget allowed for it. Libraries in larger cities will usually get the local papers as well as a number of national papers, and university libraries will do the same depending on how big the college is. In essence, this film is really bullshit in making it seem this was a lucrative career option for anyone, not realizing or caring how niche the fiche really is. And no I don't regret writing that last bit.

  6. I will say that I was intrigued by the idea that the premise could have worked well as a horror film, in a kind of Tales From the Crypt type of way, but boy did they find a way to fuck it all up to where it's basically just a horror version of Bedazzled in a way. A couple of the guests' storylines were interested and should have gotten more time, like Maggie Q's, but they focused on the weaker ones like the one involving revenge on a childhood bully and two brothers who wanted to "have it all." It's worse in that a big part of the main twist is given away in the trailer, where the overall trip and what happens is someone's fantasy, but the other half of the twist of whose fantasy it is is kinda telegraphed. Then add to that fuckery the fact that the twist reveal shouldn't work in connection to the island's rules that are explicitly laid out multiple times in the movie or the fact that by the end this movie is meant to act as a soft prequel to the damn TV show, and this should make for an amazing episode.

I too was laughing at the modest house that Michael Jordan supposedly lived in originally, but then I had a thought...was that house in Chicago or Birmingham, AL?Ā  Jordan played for the Birmingham Barons baseball team and we later see him play at a golf course in Birmingham.

Perhaps that house was not his permanent residence, but rather a second home or just a rental while he played baseball.

I was always under the assumption it was a rental near where the team played which is what the vast majority of athletes do while they have a permanent home somewhere else in the off season.

I'm just surprised that Hulk Hogan, with his penchant for bullshit, hasn't come out and said "I was supposed to be in Space Jam, brother! But it was going to be called 'Space SLAM', but I was about to join the nWo, and they didn't want a bad guy as the star brotherdudejack".

I'm almost certain he has said that at least once or twice in the last couple decades, sort of like how he's claimed for years he was the initial choice for what became the George Foreman Grill, but he wasn't home when the pitch company made the initial call.

I want to give a shout out to Isaac, the guy who sang the 2nd Opinions theme song. That was so subtle, I don't think Paul, June, or Jason caught what you were doing. That song was masterfully chosen.

For those that didn't catch it, Isaac sang to the tune of "I Believe I can Fly" by R Kelly. Yes, the grammy-winning single was very apropos for parody in this episode bc the song was written for Space Jam. Its entry on the Billboard website even says so (see screen shot below). In light of recent revelations and less recent piss jokes, this was ripe for more ridicule.

And it's a shame this connection was missing from the Podcast bc it would give so much more ammunition for Jason to rip on Chicago. Kelly was born/raised on the South Side and eventually moved out to the South 'burbs (aka, "Chicago" don't @ me). So, Jason, if you want more proof that Space Jam is just Chicago being obsessed with itself, despite obvious problems, there you go.

On that note, while cartoon physics can apply to Jordon in Looney Tunes Land, it doesn't explain how he was able to be sucked into a golf hole in the real world! How many times should he have died in this movie??

Now I wish there was an alternate ending where when the spaceship lands on the field and the ramp comes down, both the crumbled masses of Wayne Knight and Jordan's characters tumble down in a pile of mush, and the Tunes realize that due to them not being of their world the damage does take effect, but isn't realized while still in Tune atmosphere near the center of the Earth.

Now here's Street FIghter: The Movie: The Video Game
    Ā

    Ā

This raises the question.Ā  What's the point?

Well, Capcom's Street Fighter franchise currently has over THIRTY games in it... but are somehow still on Street Fighter 5.Ā  And secondly, this game has the added bonus of Kylie Minogue in a swimsuit, even though she was wearing camo in the movie, which I'm alright with.

That game might as well have been called Fuck Grammar: the Game as there was no logical reason for there to be that many colons in that title. As for the rest of the series, they basically saw what Final Fantasy was starting to do with title schemes and said hold my beer. Kingdom Hearts is trying to match their title ability with some of the batshit names that have been given to the various reboots and remasters that have been put out over the years.

I don't know how well it did commercially but the Into The Spider-Verse soundtrack is pretty great.

I know Sunflower was a really big hit, which definitely helped it sell fairly well, but it didn't have any other huge singles which is a shame. It kinda falls into the same category as the Dangerous Minds soundtrack which is basically bolstered by one mega hit while the rest is just kinda there.

You're right that is a good one. I just remember the soundtracks of the 90s as basically the way for Seal to release his next big single with each new Batman movie.

Also am I alone in thinking that Barkley didn't ask the director for a follow up scene after he got his talent back where he goes back to that park court and utterly dominates that team of kids a la Billy Madison?

Surprised the soundtrack didnā€™t come up at all.

ā€œThe soundtrack peaked at #2 on the USĀ Billboard 200. It was certified double platinum in January 1997. In 2001, the soundtrack was certified 6xĀ Platinumā€

Seal - Fly Like An Eagle

    R. Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly (separate the art from the artist...)

    LL Cool J,Ā Method Man,Ā Coolio,Ā Busta Rhymes,Ā B-Real - Hit ā€˜Em High

Quad City DJā€™s - Space Jam

Monica - For You I Will

Some great songs on this soundtrack for sure.Ā

That soundtrack ruled, I completely ruined my cassette copy with how much I was playing it, though that was also of the times too because back in the 90s the soundtracks were as well, or at times, better received as the movies they were attached to. I mean can anyone here think of a recent soundtrack that got as much acclaim as the movie it was for, I think 8 Mile is the closest in the last 20 years.

So, let's carry on the discussion.Ā  What sports did you do?Ā Ā

    I did:
    - Rugby, I played prop forward as well as an all encompassing "as soon as he gets the ball, fucking twat him"
    - Football, (actual football, not the armoured rugby football), I was a goalkeeper
    - Cricket, where I was labelled by one trainer "The most aggressive batsman I have ever witnessed in my 20 years coaching this sport"
    - Various throwing sports
    - MMA, I didn't ever get to fight because of injuries, but I know some stuff
    - Muay Thai, seeĀ above

Karate: made to do it then my parents got divorced so that nixed the whole weekly lessons thing because it cut into visiting time

Baseball: I was a good hitter but a shit fielder, played all the way up through coach-pitch

Football: never got to play a game as I messed up my Achilles Tendon

Basketball: tried out for the school team but didn't make the cut

Wrestling: wrestled a couple matches and sucked out loud, then re-aggravated prior injuries

So in regards to Jordan's rumored cheating/gambling issues, I found it odd that they made a decent-sized point about how he wouldn't take the easy route in his baseball game when the catcher is literally telling him what pitch is coming, which really stands out today with everything going on in the MLB and the Astros sign stealing scandal. I have to assume that was a Jordan note to make him look like the good guy and also fuck that catcher because if Jordan had slammed one out of the park due to the assistance he was being offered, it could only hurt the pitcher who is only trying to improve his ability and hopefully make it up to the big leagues.

Also the Harvard College Sports Analysis Collective apparently had nothing better to do and went through every shot during the game to figure out the box scores for every player and overall stats. https://www.wired.com/2011/03/space-jam-box-scores/

    This looks brilliantly awful.

The fact that Matt Bloom was told "You're a wrestler, you can already act" adds the cherry on top.

They could literally do "Wrestler Month".Ā  This, any Steve Austin movie, any of the non-Cena Marine movies, and cap it off with Ready to Rumble.

I've been saying for years that they need to cover Ready to Rumble, if only for the butt slushee scene.

  12. I found out about this watching Wrestling With Wregret on Youtube and I felt in my heart of hearts that this should be covered by the show. Featuring former WWE wrestler Albert/Tensai and some German actress, this movie is insane, especially considering the director told Albert to not take any acting classes as he felt that his wrestling career was enough training or the fact that the dog narrates the movie at points. Also there is a pickle coffin burial.

I was avoiding the trailer for spoilers but since friends, and now the minisode, have ruined that for me, I watched the Fast 9 trailer.

In theory, I'm fine with Han coming back. If Michelle Rodriguez can die (she died in 4 right) then come back, it's no less ridiculous. I think it's weird that a person so dedicated to family never mentioned a brother. I'm even fine with that because Dom's family isn't necessarily blood and that's perfectly normal.

What worries me about these revelations is the writer isn't Chris Morgan. As ridiculous as this series gets, he has been the writer since Tokyo Drift. He's been able to walk the line between awesome and stupid that miraculously works somehow. I don't know if someone else can do that with these characters.

I haven't followed the behind the scenes of this but I kind of wonder if Vin didn't have something to do with Chris Morgan leaving. It looks like Morgan is writing other stuff and maybe he's just busy. So, I'm just speculating.

I'm okay with Han being back so long as it can be explained coherently, but it also can end up horrible as it was clear they were answering to the hashtag of "justice for Han" that came about in the last movie, as doing this is a mixed bag of success in terms of fan service, and hopefully they ask why the fuck he wasn't there helping out in the last couple films. With Morgan not being the writer this time around, I wonder if it's a case of "fuck where do I go from here," because at this point the only thing left for them to do in these films is go into space, time travel, or have their cars form a Megazord. I looked at his IMDB and he isn't bogged down with a bunch of screenplays, just the next Conan film and the announced Bride of Frankenstein movie, though with Universal's Dark Universe collapsing after The Mummy fizzled, that may be a while off.

I love pinballs, but they never really caught on here.Ā Ā

I remember playing on a The Who pinball machine.Ā  I played it, doing quite well for myself, then the scoreboard just flashed "CHRISTMAS!!!!" and holy shit, there must have been 20 balls just drop down.

Oh pinball machines definitely take cues from casino games and pachinko in drawing people in with poppy noises and bright flashing lights. The Metallica one has a multiball moment where the electric chair at the top of the machine lights up and shakes before launching about five balls in a frenzy and Ride the Lightning starts blaring from the speakers. At the Hall of Fame they have an early 90s WWF Royal Rumble machine and holy hell when I hit the proper ramp to get the "you eliminated them" flashing on the screen, I realize what it must feel like when someone wins a good chunk of money on a slot machine, because not even Macho Man Randy Savage could eliminate Yokozuna by himself, but I did it with relative ease.

As it turns out, they're like Ā£7000

    Ā

I'm amazed at how pinball machines have not dropped in price over the last 25 years, because I remember being a kid and seeing in an old issue of Wizard Magazine a special anniversary edition of the Star Wars Trilogy machine being released for the remastered editions coming to theaters, and that thing was $7,600. I'm assuming that because of them being complex machines that have to be put together by workers rather than machines, along with shipping them safely makes them so much more costly. Also that Metallica machine is a great one, I've put tens of dollars into one at a local movie theater and it never gets old, though it can tilt quite a bit.

I love that place, I got pretty good at the Stargate machine when I used to go. I love the two Mario Bros. machines as well even though I'm terrible at them. If it's Mario it's fun no matter the outcome. Last year or so they said it was going to move closer to or on the Strip, which would be a bummer for me (even though it would be closer to my house), but better for business and the tourists, but it hasn't happened yet.

Yeah it's still where it's been for the last 4 years I've been there, but to be honest it's pretty close to the Strip to begin with, so unless it's getting a spot in one of the casinos there I don't know where they could move it. I did like during my last trip that they now have a machine that basically is like the old Ultracade machines but instead of arcade games, it's all of the pinball machines within the Hall of Fame, shown on a flatscreen TV instead of a menagerie of various mechanical elements. Once I saw it I instantly went online to the company's site to see if it was for purchase there but it looks like a custom job for the Hall, meaning it probably cost an arm and a leg to have programmed for them.

    Also a pinball machine.

This movie just solidified why I never liked any version of Pinocchio as a kid. Though my something nice: I think Bebe Neuwirth and (begrudgingly) Rob Schneider did a fantastic job as the Cat and Fox. I got who they were supposed to be immediately, and Felinet did act cat-like even without the Cat Woman purring. That's it. I deeply hated this movie other than that.

Also Gigi you did a great job! šŸ’

Ah yes the pinball machines, which nine times out of ten were usually better than the shitty movie they were based off of. Every year when I go to Las Vegas, I always make sure to stop at the Pinball Hall of Fame and without fail the machines for Last Action Hero, Johnny Mnemonic, and Demolition Man are still the best adaptation machines in the whole place.

Did anyone else feel like Pinocchioā€™s lies at the end of the movie weā€™re pretty fucked up and cruel? Like, I get that heā€™s trying to hit the monsterā€™sĀ gag reflex with his massive wooden nose, but thereā€™s no rule in the movie that the growth in his noseĀ has any correlation to the magnitude of the lie heā€™s telling.Ā Instead of looking his caregiver and guardianĀ inĀ the eye and calling him a piece ofĀ trash, couldnā€™t Pinocchio have just said, ā€œSnowĀ is hotā€ or something else equally prosaic? Gepetto might beĀ a big old sack of who-gives-a-fuck as a character, but he did risk his life to save your ass,Ā you ungrateful little abomination. He wasĀ swallowed by a rival puppeteer. His day has beenĀ bad enough.

Like with most public domain stories, there are different iterations of the growth ability in connection to the lie being told, but some have it as growing based on the magnitude of the lie being told. Another fucked up version of the character came from the amazing comic series Fables (seriously if you haven't read it yet, do so) where Pinocchio was left as a 10 year old boy once he was transformed from a puppet by the Blue Fairy, leaving him unable to grow up and in the world of the series, unable to go into a bar or have a relationship because everyone who wasn't a Fable thought he was just a small boy. It ultimately leaves him filled with anger and bitter contempt for the Blue Fairy to where upon the first time he comes across her in centuries, he attempts to kill her.

Also, I figured this would fit well with the whole phallic nature of his nose and kinda lend credence to the idea that Geppetto had ulterior motives.

    Ā

  19. What's kind of a bummer was that they weren't able to do the original ending that Robert Rodriguez had written which instead of the final two fighters looking up into the sky seeing the next wave of targets being released onto the hunting reserve, a ship lands in front of them, with a couple Predators of the same group as the captive one was, followed by Arnold Schwarzenegger coming out behind them and congratulating them on a good job but that it's only the beginning. A similar ending was also apparently set for the latest Predator film where instead of some Predator super armor being in the ship the army finds at the end, it's actually Arnold, which would work better instead of the other two endings which were actually filmed that had either Ellen Ripley or somehow and adult version of Newt as the Predator Killer being sent to the humans, regardless that neither of those characters wouldn't be born for another 70 and 115 years, respectively.

    Ā

    Ā

If there was a movie made in the 90s, there was almost a 90% chance of there being at least a trading card set, pogs, a Saturday morning cartoon, a line of action figures that had nothing to do with the movie (like the Dennis Nedry figure for Jurassic Park being a skinny guy with a rocket launcher), and a video game that had very little if anything based from the film. SNL had a great segment that was made like a commercial promoting the new action figures and video game based on Philadelphia, but it was nowhere near what the movie was about as it featured aliens, exploding chairs in the courtroom, and the lead characters have jetpacks and lasers. The video game doesn't even take place on Earth and is instead a spaceship fighting game.

Yeah it was confirmed during the film of Hobbs & Shaw that at least the Rock wouldn't be appearing in this film, Statham hasn't been confirmed or denied so far. I did get a nice chill at the reveal at the end of the trailer, but that along with the reveal that John Cena is apparently Dom's brother, this series has gone from over the top superhero film to soap opera. Also after revealing that somehow Han has been alive and just been hiding out for apparently years, I have to assume that they approached Gal Gadot into coming back as well but were unable to get her because she was filming Wonder Woman 1984, because if two of the three big "deaths" at the end of Fast 6 have now been proven to have not happened, then she should most definitely still be alive.

  22. One performance that should be applauded in this was Will Patton's who actually gives a solid job as Travolta's right hand man, who is a closeted gay man who has hidden feelings for Travolta. I didn't realize the hidden feelings aspect until reading a retrospective review that points to the scene where Travolta kills Patton after that stupid chieftain knife fighting monologue and how Patton doesn't fight back until the knife is literally driven into his body, because he up to that point thought Travolta had finally figured out Patton was gay and returning the feeling, even sharing Patton's preference to rough sex when he grabbed him by the throat. You can actually see Patton caressing Travolta's hand around his throat before he realizes that Travolta has other intentions.

As far as Jane's performance as the Punisher goes, I had the chance last year to talk to Tim Bradstreet who worked on the covers for the bulk of the Punisher covers in the early 2000s and he could not stand how Jane played the character, given that the movie came out as Punisher Max was running strong in stores and was a very stark contrast to what was shown in the movie. He said that the movie was a major punchline in the Marvel offices after it fizzled in theaters, used alongside Daredevil and Catwoman as examples of why comics won't be taken seriously in movies.

  23. Going to bump this thread because this film really should be covered on the podcast, if only for the bonkers twist and the scene where the killer is getting oral sex using a decapitated head, which in connection to the twist has no basis in reality and shouldn't exist.
