  1. Haha yeah, forgotten NPC's, continuity errors, and rushed finales are definitely symptoms of a marked lack of time. I too am excited to see what Blaine cooks up for the party! Brian & I are sorting out when a post-mortem chat could happen. All the questions posed so far in this thread have at least partial answers in my notebook. Unfortunately my *baby-classes are on Tuesday evenings (the traditional Nerd Poker recording night) so it may be a little while.

I'll be doing a final pass on the 'Ask Sark' thread here in the forums sometime in the next couple of days so if you have any questions leave 'em in there!

Thanks for listening all these weeks! You guys are great :)

*I don't want to miss a class because I KNOW the week I don't go will be the one where they teach how best to cook an infant.

  2. Insane. You're all insane. You should be committed to a special asylum for artists where we give you artistic-pills and you are chained to easels and are forced to draw shit.

I'm placing you all under arrest.

*I just hit my limit of 'likes' for the day goddammit. Slow down with the awesome plz.

  3.

I was just being silly, sorry, nuance doesn't play on the internetz. I'm sure they get SOME cash, it's a hell of a commitment without at least a bit of a handout, and Brian's name/beautiful face is what arguably brings all the boys to the yard, (though even a casual listener knows the show suffers when *anyone* is missing) but yes, I think we all know there's nothing about the Earwolf empire that seems particularly lucrative.

We're just playing for fun. The podcast was a good excuse for us to get back together after we hadn't played in a while. Wouldn't mind if it turned a dime someday but as it stands right now, priority-wise, it suffers from all the usual hangups that a normal D&D game suffers. Sick days. Day jobs and other gigs. Family stuff. Could be seen as adding to the realism :)

  4. When Blaine said "I'll light it up"...I thought this was going to turn out as one of the funniest moments on the show - but the dwarf didn't even care. I think Sark had no idea Blaine was going to do that... and realistically I bet it would have ended with the group getting exiled for Blackie's actions. But Sark probably spent a lot of time writing the plot for this particular storyline so that's why that dwarf didn't care. Perhaps the "beaver dam" place that Blackie destroyed was actually really important but Sark switched it's significance at the last second, so that the group could continue on this storyline.

I always expect Blackie to 'light it up'. :) Fortunately these Dwarves hate pansies. Blackie has once again accidentally raised the party's stock. But sometimes a rough & tumble bunch, like these mountain dwarves, can be a pain to associate with.

  5. Not really Nerd Poker related but after listening to your tales of Halo tournies and whatnot I was watching some humorous GTA V vids and heard a familiar name. So... @ 0:32, is this you?

Yeah, I've been working in videogame media for nearly 10yrs, and recently went independent with my own YouTube channel. That vid is one of my buddy's GTA videos. I realized when I read your post I didn't have a link to my YouTube channel in my profile so I've added that below. Pretty goofy stuff,

  6. Okay, another question for Sark. Just listened to #53, and I have to ask - do you creep yourself out coming up with these stories? I mean the planet of corpses was bad enough, but you're really pulling all the stops out now.

I GMed a game once that involved my players trying to rescue a boy from a religious cult who considered him their Savior. They found out that the boy was going to be sacrificed and his blood used to anoint the conception of the next Savior. The twist - the boy knew what was going to happen and didn't want to be rescued. I felt like I needed to scrub my brain clean after thinking that up. Do you feel that way after these darker episodes?

Yep. I love freaking myself out. Sort of a rush, actually.

  7. Hey Sark. No question at the moment. I've been listening to the podcast for a few months now, and I'm so happy that the campaign is going so well! The Spelljamming travel has been a particularly nice touch as a refreshing nuance that adds unlimited variety and possibility to your game, and I definitely approve of the move from 4th edition. Also, I'm loving your villain. Raising the stakes by continually having the Necromancer perform both generayl and specifically dispicable acts has been really fun to listen to, and I think due to that, the inevitable confrontation between him and the party will only be that much more rewarding. Keep up the good work, man! You're an inspiration!

Glad you're enjoying! I'm actually surprised we've kept this campaign going for as long as we have considering how crazy the last couple years have been for the party (irl). Should be a good fight when these guys catch up to this old fucker.

  8. Hey Sark, this isn't much of a question as it is an invitation. I work a couple of Renaissance Festivals across the country, and I do a podcast called the HobCast. I play beloved entertainer Hob The Troll, and it's part interview, part improv. Some of my guests are seasoned stage acts from the Ren Fest circuit, other guests include some folks from the Thrilling Adventure Hour, Deborah Reed from Troll 2, Rodney Anonymous from the Dead Milkmen, BUT ENOUGH NAME DROPPING! I would like to formally extend an invitation to you, and the whole Nerd Poker gang. Whoever would like to do it! I love the show, and I thought it would be fun to have an interview with Blackie, Mildred, Sir Richard, Bart, Damien, and whatever NPC you'd like to be interviewed!

We could do it via Skype or the phone, whatever is easiest. Let me know if you (or anybody else) would be interested!

    -Stevo

I appreciate the invite! We actually listened to a Hob The Troll song one of these weeks before recording. Between my YouTube channel, Nerd Poker, and my recently announced Baby Sark, I may have to take a rain check until my days are in something resembling order but again, I truly appreciate it!

  9. How much of the Tower was actually mapped out? I mean, that was one huge-ass Tower, right? Was there a detailed floorplan for all of it?

Since it extended clear through the mass of corpses I could treat either end as a sort of mirror image.

So, I had the top floors drawn up, I had the floor where they docked drawn up, I had about 8 floors sketched out for myself to cover any stops along the ascent/descent of the tower, and in case those were exhausted I had another 10 single line descriptions of ideas for other rooms/events. I wish I had time to draw the whole thing up. Probably could've made the tower scenario more engaging rather than seemingly never-ending. But that's the way it goes.

  10. Great episode as always. I think I have a better idea of what the old man is doing and why the gods (or at least Bahamut) are helping our heroes. It seems like "Lifeboat" is trying to become a deity himself by abducting and replacing all females in the universe with clones that he has absolute power over. The cloned females then give birth to children that he can control.

One thing I don't get is that it seems like the destruction of the tower/spaceship (flying into the sun) would release them from his power. That's sort of what happened to Mildred when Stargoyle sucked up her soul fragment and she was released.

I think being able to read these forums is a cool source of bonus perspectives for the party :) I'm thinking of the tower like it's Cerebro, and the Necromancer is Professor X. He sent some final, large scale orders out before the tower crashed. For now his influence has been reduced to what he can narrowly focus on, and his energy spent is much higher.

But Bahamut help the crew if this dude is able to construct another 'antenna'.

  11. But also.... dudes really? were going to give casters the shaft?

Common guys... If your going to have casters do it right....

Spell list, spells prepaired. CASTING TIME!!! Round segments. And Rounds..... two differant things.

you are correct sir. I addressed some issuse in my Topic

Not sure Sark or the cast actually read these forums and it's been ten years since I last played a caster in 2nd ed. but I'm almost sure that the casting time in the player HB is in round segments (in second a round is broken into 10 segments for casting) unless it specifically says a # of rounds.

    You guys rock!

Never knew this OR used it but it makes perfect sense. Usually I'm all about rules that speed things up :) I'll roll this in to the game when we play next. Since we're trying to jam through eps to cover the holidays you won't actually hear me adopt this until around the first week of December. In fact, you'll hear the party bring it up (in a roundabout way involving memorization of spells) in the next couple eps, which is what led me to come back over here and comb the forums for the comments.

    Good heads up!

I love this rule clarification. The changes happened as soon as I read the first of your posts! ;)

  12. ...Both ships have airlocks that have to be opened and closed manually, from just inside the outer door? Who would EVER design an airlock system that way? How did anyone ever get on or off this ship in the past? Did they have to sacrifice a person and give the whole crew terrible bloody orifices every time a ship "docked?"...

...Please tell me I missed something obvious, like the remote opener was broken or something...

...I also kind of felt Sark was leading Blackie to the right conclusion. There are a lot of jumps in logic, there. I expected at least some kind of Intelligence check for remembering where the airlock actually was - it was only opened for a couple of seconds, without warning. Especially after all the intense skill checks happening before, it all seemed a bit.. too convenient.

That said, I also appreciate that Sark might just want the adventure to move the fuck along, and not spend too much time on this stuff.

Yeah no doubt this was a little loose but here's the airlock dets (keep in mind I learned everything I know about airlocks from Event Horizon, The Abyss, and 2001... with a dash of Wikipedia.)

I though it would be interesting if, as an additional safety feature, entrance to an airlock was via a short teleport rather than a bulkhead, especially an executive airlock.

The controls to the airlock were up in the bridge (the room with the viewport adjacent to the necromancer's quarters) and Blackee would've had the best chance to operate them, but he was off in the skiff (He caught a lot of crap from the party while he was away, but I honestly I think he saved the day). I thought about having the means by which the airlock was opened be the necromancer actually blasting an underling out into space everytime he wanted it open, but as entertaining as he might find that, it seemed pretty unreliable and tedious.

The escape ship was not always docked outside, I had unvisited areas of the tower set aside as internal docking bays where ships could be reeled in and not be damaged by dangling outside on an external docking area when the Tower made an FTL jump (probably doesn't actually matter since the ship isn't technically accelerating but whatevs). Would've been interesting if the party had made off with the executive escape craft. Hahaha. On a vessel as big as the tower though, stumbling across some of these spots was pretty low.

As far as the party's relatively easy crossing... I do wish I'd had Blackee roll a bit more for that precision ship alignment BUT I gave it to them with low-risk for two reasons. 1- They put the time in to the planning, which was good role-playing. 2- Like qrter said above, I just wanted them off that goddamned tower. :)

  13. Really let down by this episode. Sure there were some fun moments (which is why I listen) but as far as the gameplay... c'mon if you were just going to hand it to them why waste an entire episode while they uselessly planned out a strategy. Sark basically explained to "Blackie" exactly what the group was doing. Pretty lame. Could have saved 50mins and just said "Ok everyone you line up the ships and make the jump, what next?". Seemed pretty clear there was not even a possibility of failure here. Sark must be scared after the "keep rolling til you fall" episode.

I'm never too scared to gig a player :) BUT I gave it to them with low-risk because they spent the time planning. May not make for the best podcast episode, but I'm role-playing that we're not podcasting!

  14. i think an Endure elments spell would of been helpfull..... plus it poses the question, would endure emelents, which protects you from all natural weather effects, hot/cold/rain/snow...... could it be seen as also to protect from pressure deferentals? beit high or low? It will protect from altitude sickness from being in the mountains..... Soo... Other Mages thougts?

...Bad Wizard: Regarding your endure elements question: If I were GMing, I like to reward people for using spells creatively, especially non-combat/non-buff spells so I'd totally give them some sort of damage reduction/benefit if they used Endure Elements to counteract the effects of a vacuum.

I hadn't thought of it, but if it had been brought up this is definitely the kind of thing that I'd assign bonuses for. It sort of makes sense but more importantly it's creative and makes a player feel like a badass.

  15. Joined the forums for HDTGM? and I find myself reading more posts from this Earwolf sub-forum than there. This podcast is hands down amazing, thanks Sark and company for making just listening to a DND game fun.

No question this time, just wanted to say thanks again for the awesome show and thanks for taking time to answer all of our questions!

Thanks pals. Glad you're enjoying us enjoying ourselves. That's win-win entertainment! :)

  17. I painted some Minis for the pre-priest group. They're in LA, all delivered by the mailman to Earwolf's PO box earlier this month and everything! Here's how they look. If Brian and the gang want 'em, just go get your snail mail bros (and Sarah).

  18. sark had a good point in that anyone who is familiar with playing video games should also be familiar with the basic structure of D&D. i could see that.

As videogamers are introduced to D&D they are usually surprised at how many pen & paper mechanics have been assimilated by their digital cousins! Playing Final Fantasy you can practically hear the dice rolling, and even with first person RPG's like Skyrim, it feels like you're playing classic adventure modules. I still love these games, but their roots are firmly in tabletop gaming. :)

  19. Also, I've just noticed something… as we all know, they record two episodes at a time. When Sark puts a cliffhanger at the end of a session (the second show of the night) Brian whines like a baby, but if one falls at the midpoint of a session (end of the first episode of the night), Brian's the first one to shout "let's wrap it" because he loves the idea of a cliffhanger for the audience, so long as he doesn't have to wait, ha.

HAHAHAHA I hadn't even thought about this.

  20. Can't wait to see brian's new character!

I think it would be cool since the characters switched to Second edition if they went through their character stats like they did in the first few episodes. It would give me a better idea of what the difference between "magic missile" and "Eldritch blast" are for Blackie Greene's character. anyone else thinking about that?

Today's recording would've been best for this but we were short a couple people so we just hopped in. Once everyone is back in their seats I think this is a great idea!

  21. ...I wouldn't be surprised if at the end they hadn't confronted the old man, hadn't made it much beyond the elevator, and we were still weren't clear as to the meaning behind anything that's going on.

Believe me, I'm excited for a change of scenery as well. The last several weeks are a tsunami of unexpected group decisions, real-life interference for just about the entire group, and my being painted into a corner by a large-scale campaign that, for a bi-monthly play group, probably should've been a bit more bite size.

But just because this is a 'show' doesn't mean it takes the priority in our lives that you seem to think it should. There are ads, presumably so Earwolf can pay the sound guy and cover the studio fees, but we're not making any cash off this at the moment so if during the week I'm faced with a gig, or figuring out clever ways to give the party a peek into The Necromancer's grand plan, the gig rules. I'm not trying to bash you, I'm (hopefully) just shining a little light on the backstage.

For both our sakes here's hoping we get to the next chapter soon! I have a handful of eventualities accounted for, and the most likely ones are very exciting (to me anyway).

  22. when are you gonna do a big information dump on shit they completely ran past? ive been relistening to the whole set and there's some pretty interesting stuff i'd like to see addressed.

When I set aside the time is the short answer. I do really want to do this though. I'm the problem-child in the group when it comes to scheduling and to be honest I'm surprised I've been able to continue with the podcast this long. I tried promising my landlord imaginary unimaginable wealth, but he didn't go for it. The miser.
