Episode 66 — Paul F. Tompkins Again, Our Close Friend
Joe McGurl replied to agata's topic in Hollywood Handbook
Jes, It's Joe. Remember back in sophomore year when we were seeing each other, I let you borrow my Dave Matthews Band sweatshirt? Just wondering if you still had it and if you do, can I get it back? Other question: A lot of people said Jennifer Anniston was really great in Cake this year. My question is, how did they bake a cake big enough to fit her inside and what did she so inside the cake that really made her standout? -

The AV Club takes itself waaaaaay too seriously these days. Most of the reviewers write as if they are working on a grad school thesis on how to deconstruct and pick apart every aspect of a particular television program because it isn't as high concept as Louie and how it COULD have been better. Your job as a reviewer isn't to make the show better, it's to review a fucking show as it's presented to you from an objective viewpoint. For instance, the review of the latest CBB tv show -- which in my opinion, was one of the strongest in a while -- got a C+ because apparently Ty Burrell and Scott having incredible chemistry together and Fabrice Fabrice doing his usual, very funny shtick just didn't "work" for the reviewer. The reviewers are always constantly contradicting themselves as well. Example: "Tonight’s episode didn’t work for me. Even filtering it through the Princess Bride-style framing device, which elides and edits the interview and in-studio antics (and maybe substitutes the kidnapper’s sense of humor for the show’s) didn’t make the assortment of one-off jokes more than a jumble of quips. It’s not thoughtful enough to be meta and it’s not funny enough to be amusing on its own merits." In the very next paragraph, "The external segments—the bedtime story, the Dane Looker promotional clip, the aborted rehearsal of the fairy-tale sketch—are the episode’s strongest features." So, the Princess Bride storytelling framing device didn't work for her because it wasn't thoughtful enough to be meta or funny enough to be amusing, but the Princess Bride storytelling framing device was one of the episode's strongest features? Got it. They need to cool the gas on how serious they take themselves. I'm all for valid criticisms being levied against something for being legitimately stupid or unfunny but some shows are "stupid" and it takes a lot of fucking smarts to be "stupid." i.e. Workaholics. TL;DR The comedy reviewers at The AV Club don't know what comedy is -

I didn't really have strong feelings for Workaholics during season 1 but I watched it anyway. Season 2 was really strong though I thought and it's been consistently hilarious since. -

/begin rant Bitching about musical episodes in this forum is like someone giving you home made ice cream every week and then one week they put a cherry on top of the ice cream but you don't like cherries. So instead of doing the normal thing and just ignoring the cherry and not eating it, you complain about how they put that cherry on the ice cream that they worked hard to make for you and then going to an "Ice Cream with Cherries on Top" convention and telling everyone there about how you don't like cherries on top of your ice cream. Be a grown human, ignore the cherry or just don't eat the ice cream at all. Honestly, if you aren't into it, just skip past the music. You can do that. It's SO easy. I've done it. It's totally fine and no one else needs to know! It can be your little secret!! or You could listen. I remember listening to the Sarah Silverman/Nick Kroll/Dan Mangan episode way back when. I had no idea who Dan Mangan was prior to starting the show. I finished the episode and immediately went to iTunes and bought all of his music available. Oh Fortune is now one of my favorite albums of all time and I have Scott and CBB to thank for that. Comedy Bang Bang and to that extent, Earwolf, is a fucking gift. You get top quality entertainment podcasts every week for FREE. You don't have to like an episode, you don't have to like a guest, you don't have to like a band booked for a music episode, you don't have to like music episodes at all but for fuck's sake, keep it to yourself or at least be constructive in your criticisms. /end rant Anyway. Great ep. Hanford doing the worst, least knowledgeable Lennon impression was killing me. Never heard of American Football before but they sounded pretty good!

Andy, your insistence to only play Blues Traveler last night consistently made me laugh. You were the MVP. I had a great time yesterday. Great to chat with you all. Sorry if I intimidated everyone with all my great jokes and all my handsomeness P.S. I was late for work today because you guys insisted I shouldn't go to bed and should hang out till quarter after two. #NoRegrets -

Well since we're promoting bands http://scumbagpetty.bandcamp.com/ The best rocking roll band in all of Scranton and in fact all of the world. Johnny Crotty, Craig Legg, Dirty Dave, Zeke and Ronnie the Trash Can. Bringin you all the booze, bodacious babes and tunes that you can handle. We write songs about bars, feelin good, relationships and partyin because that's what rock AND roll is all about. I would recommend the tracks; Foolin', Minooka Lovin'. Cheap Shots and Real Deal (Forget About It.) Not just because I hear the guy who sings those songs is really handsome and funny. -

I worry for the sanity of us all if there is no episode tomorrow. Two weeks in one thread has driven us all to devolve to mainly speak through pictures. With that being said...
