hey no joke guys, a funny personal story about gymkata... when i was a little kid, my dad and brother were on vacation (guys' night out!) and one evening we saw this movie playing on TV back at the hotel. being little kids, but not too little to recognize a "good" bad movie, we LOVED it. we loved it so much in fact that when we got home our parents sat us down for the talk. no not the sex talk, but the talk about strangers with candy, strangers with rape vans, and killer clowns trying to lure children into their clown rape cars (how many abducted children can he fit in there?!?!). the talk about how we shouldn't trust anyone who claims to be a representative of the family if we do not know them. so we had a family "safe word", so for instance if my parents were in an accident and had to send a coworker to pick us up they could say "hey, your mom sent me to get you guys. i know you've never met me before, but the secret word is gymkata" and if they said that we knew that we should trust them and get in the car with them. some important facts. first, i was never raped or even approached by a clown. second, i am over 30 now so don't try and approach me and lure me into your clown car. i mean i am still likely to get in a car with you if you mentioned gymkata, but if you are a pedo clown rapist i figured i'm probably not your ideal victim... much love for a film that has given my family an impenetrable level of security... gymkata.

i never saw baz lurman's romeo & juliet. i never saw moulin rouge. his great gatsby just looks so fucking, and if i may quote jason, cukoo bananas crazy with garrish 3D bullshit and a soundtrack with fucking jay-z and fergie... it all sounds "on the spectrum"... NOW, i did happen to listen to an interview of baz. lurhman? laz burman? whatever, the director on colbert report and i kind of appreciated his POV on the whole project. which is fine. but still, this is a movie that looks visually fucked up, it's getting middling reviews, and it's current which i actually missed about the older episodes. don't get me wrong, i like it when they do an episode where you can easily find the movie on netflix or on demand or the internet or... in my own DVD collection... but i also enjoyed the current "NOW!" factor when they used to do more episodes about movies which were still in theaters. i feel like they haven't done one of those in a while. and if not great gatbsty... do "after earth" because that one looks fucking terrible...!!!

Who's Your Caddy (2007)
ill Neal replied to choochoo_the_wonder_slut's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
are you recommending this movie because it's been on weekday rotation on comedy central this last week? (you're not the only unemployed member of this forum) -
last year i went on a drinking excursion to san diego with a college buddy of mine. we got drunk at the palm beach shore club and then walked out on to crystal pier to watch the surfers. this one surfer wasn't doing shit, he was just sitting on his board. so i yelled at him "you've never surfed a day in your life!" in my mind he was rob schneider's poser surfer character. i do love this movie but personally i think there are other movies i'd rather see done on HDTGM. i prefer the actual attempts at hollywood blockbusters that fail and end up having incomprehensible plots due to poor editing. i find that more interesting. let's face it, at the end of the day surf ninjas was a kids movie and i think we can all agree that it's not a bad film. but hey maybe it will be enjoyable for the hosts they deserve a good one every now and then, right?

WHOA. ray wise is in this?!?!?!?! i have to see it now.

um, i actually own this movie on DVD. because it's fucking awesome. kwan-soo, dude!!!

see... the way i look at it is that it WASN'T deliberately gimmicky... the FILM itself wasn't very gimmicky. "pacific flight #597" or whatever was just a stupid movie. what was gimmicky was the publicity surrounding the movie, and the way the advertising was handled. okay i take some of that back. yeah regardless of the title, how the movie was promoted, advertised, or received by audiences, the concept of "snakes on a plane" is pretty gimmicky when you get right down to it. still though i feel it would be a good choice because gimmickiness aside, it was a film that was advertised, marketed, and post-produced in such a bizarre way that it warrants to ask the question "how did this get made?" and even as gimmicky as the final movie is/was, it did not nearly live up to the expectations that the public had (maybe they were duped by the advertising, or maybe they duped themselves?)

the cast uses the world "literally" quite often. they say it literally every other word. but you know what other well they1 dip into literally every episode? the "heat" deniro/pacino showdown. that comparison shows up literally all the time. i think the deniro/pacino "heat" reference is literally the new "literally". 1. jason

which do you prefer? to listen to a podcast first, and then watch the movie? or to watch the movie fresh, and then listen to the podcast? honestly... i think i like listening to the podcast first. i only discovered this podcast a few months ago so when i got into the game i had a huge stack of episodes to listen to... which i did. now i've been going back and watching the movies that i think will be the most ridiculous, and i have NOT been disappointed, by any means!!! but i'm just curious what others think. i watched superman III after the podcast. i watched barb wire after the podcast (actually the end credits are rolling as we speak). there are things in the movie that i feel i wouldn't have caught on to, had they not been pointed out by the podcasts... for instance, jason's adamant objection to the fact that this film takes place so far in the future, yet everyone knows who batman and sonny & cher are. i wouldn't have put that together. anyway, just curious if you prefer to listen to a podcast and then watch the movie, or watch the movie before listening to the podcast. and now to go post in the 'barb wire' thread...!!!!

maybe pat robertson is just a really dedicated role-player?

i'm actually interested in this. it's a bad movie, it had a major theatrical release, and there is some intrigue involved in the production and marketing. from what i understand this was a movie that was PG-13 and everyone laughed at it, then they added 3 samuel jackson FUCK!s to the trailer, and the internet demanded that they recut and dub the movie into an R film. and even as an R it's a terrible movie (i saw it, like 5 years ago). it's a film whose legacy outlives the actual movie itself. i'm all for it!

this movie is one of my favorites. but i don't think that it reached that large of an audience. hate to be the 'how did this get made' police because it's not MY podcast, but i feel like the podcast is best when focused on a film that either aims high or makes it to too large of an audience. as far as i remember, the stuff never hit a major theater release and sort of achieved what it meant to achieve. plus it's just a great fucking movie. i'm not against hearing paul june and jason plus guest react to the amazing scenes in this movie... fuck who am i to say no? do it!

ACTUALLY i just realized an error in my first message. i actually watched "birdemic" before listening to the podcast. i knew what birdemic is, who hasn't right? i just never got around to seeing it. i actually had a copy of birdemic ready to watch for months it just sat around i never got to it. so finally i started listening to HDTGM and saw this episode and thought "okay i have to watch this before listening to the podcast"... anyway so i saw the film first, then watched the movie and.... eh? i kind of get upset when they don't mention the hilarious things that i focused on! for instance, i was obsessed... OBSESSED about the line "where is (your girlfriend)?", "oh she's out taking a shit". followed by "the war... i couldn't take all the fucking killing!"... it was just a light PG movie until all the sudden they threw this random profanity in!!! again i was obsessed with it. and then i listened to the podcast and they didn't give it as much attention as i felt they should have!!! and i didn't like it. don't get me wrong it was funny but in my mind i'm like "OHHHH WHY AREN'T YOU DISCUSSING THE THING THAT I THOUGHT WAS SO FUNNY!!!!!!" so that being said... i think i prefer to listen to the podcast prior to watching the film. a) they point out things for me to look out for because i wouldn't notice them watching the film on my own and i don't get angry when they don't discuss the things i want them to discuss after i see the film... because i haven't seen the film myself yet. i do like and appreciate the "chore" aspect, though. i recently watched "speed 2". that was BAD. so dull and boring. not entertaining in any aspect (EXCEPT for the parts hilariously pointed out by our favorite podcast hosts).

last night we had a "critical mass"-style bike ride in st louis. i listened to nerd poker on the way to and from the ride. blaine will never play a druid because of us. (we don't have critical mass in st louis, we have "fucking bike club" which is essentially the same thing)

HAHA okay and one more. what, really, is the deal with hammerhead, the bar. is it a heavy metal biker bar? or is it a fancy steakhouse with waiters in tuxedos? it's BOTH! there is a scene where the drunken bikers at one table are physically attacking their waiter, and one of that waiter's coworkers walks past, scoffing, to deliver fine steaks and red wine to some fancy pants customers at the adjacent table!!!

i just watched this one. my thoughts: i'm surprised the character of curly didn't come up in the discussion! i loved curly!!! i wiki'd that actor because he looked familiar, holy character-actor extraordinare! i feel like he and bob gunton are up for the same roles a lot (and i think they may have evern been in the same movie together....) seriously though --- this movie came out in 1996 in the height of the '90s action movie craze (god, what a craze!). to bring up a point that our podcasters made... what makes this an "R" rated movie?!? the version i saw (which claimed to be a blu-ray rip, don't worry where i got it from) had a rare PG-13 level flash of nip and two spurts of blood. this was an era when some of my favorite ultraviolent movies were coming out. the same era that brought us demolition man and true lies which are two movies who earned their "R" rating... honestly when i think about it, i think this is an opposite move of what they do today. back in the '90s they would shoot for an R rating. if the MPAA gives it a PG-13, you add bits here and there to get that R to attract the action crowds of the day. in 201x they shoot for that watered down PG-13 to attract a larger audience. i saw that post earlier of the screengrab of the yachts in the (steel) harbor. that was great. totally didn't notice that! i will have to say though, as an action fan i did appreciate some of the stunts, specifically the crane-forklift-car lift at the end. there were some good shots in that fight. all in all, it's a movie i would recommend. i love this podcast, and i want to watch the films along with them. i don't think i could ever sit through a 'gigli' or a 'twilight' movie... but this one i felt was totally worthwhile!!! and now on to "speed 2: cruise control"

i just thought of something else. has sir richard been playing since his awake on his ship with sark on the side? or did gerry show up when we the listeners were also introduced to him? because at one point in this episode, sark was describing some damage done to the ship, and sir richard mentioned he may have accidentally damaged the ship earlier not knowing what he was doing. was this gerry role playing? or is there a hidden sir richard prequel out there somewhere???? the adventures of sir richard and jaffe. i'd like to hear that one..!

...but i am absolutely HOOKED on nerd poker. it's not like i was doing more productive things as a child. god i spent so many hours playing (and strategizing about) trade wars 2002. legend of the red dragon? oh man i loved that shit! my friends loved that shit! i could tell you all a bunch of "sweet rememberances" about being in an escape pod post-ship destruction with zero turns, waiting for the hour to roll over to hopefully fly away to safety when you read <an ether probe enters the sector> <an ether probe leaves the sector> fuck!! <xanos enters the sector> <xanos is powering up weapon systems!> that's a little TW20002 in-joke. anyway, listening to nerd poker now has made me realize that i've missed out on a great opportunity. so what do i do about it now? i saw some comic book stores in my area have public games but... i'm a little skeptical about that. is anyone "active" in a local D&D community? what would i need if i wanted to just "find" a game? (hell while i'm at it, does anyone play in st louis? that would be really convenient...)

i think that ship was doomed no matter what happened. i think the only way to save that ship was to kill jaffe. he was a ticking time-bomb. that's why i don't think that the blood of everyone on that ship rests on amarth's shoulders. killing the hostage-pilot was what it was, but i don't think that single action was solely responsible for the destruction of that ship. that's how i saw it, anyway.

ah yes like the fat people in speed 2. now i get it!

i like it (the concept). haven't seen the movie but everything i've read says it's terrible. i feel like it's been a while since they've done a "still-in-theaters" movie...

in the podcasts it's evident that you guys are all jason statham fans. (who isn't, right?) the cranks, the uwe boll movie (along with several other titles who seem to be making a point of trying to get on the podcast) plus his roles in snatch and lock, stock. the guy's a kick ass action machine. anyway i have to recommend one of my favorite movies in which he plays an awesome roll, London (2005) starring chris evans and jessica biel. basically the movie takes place at a party in this manhattan loft. chris evans is going to see his ex GF and he's freaking out, so he buys some drugs from a banker named "bateman" (statham), who decides to attend the party with evans. a large majority of the film follows bateman and evans doing drugs in the bathroom and reminiscing about their relationsip problems. it is way cooler than i am making it sound. statham has an awesome scene where bateman reminisces about going to an S&M club. dane cook is tolerable in a cameo apperanace, and louis CK has a small role, too. plus, one of my favorite lines in a film; "who the fuck is BATEMAN?!?" ill neal recommends. p.s. i don't remember which episode it was, but thanks for mentioning and briefly recommending "attack the block" on one of the podcasts. listening to you guys talk about it got me interested, so i looked it up, got into it, and got a copy. WOW! one of the best movies i've ever seen! i abolutely love showing it to my friends who've never heard of it.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
ill Neal replied to roswellxavier's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
yeah i'm going to have to say that this movie was a good movie. i liked it! "computer? hello, computer?" it's goofy. i'll absolutely give you that. i forgot the police academy antics at the hospital. but also keep in mind that this movie was very well received and people who enjoyed the star trek movies generally point to this as one of their favorites. i know it's not my podcast by any means, but when i think of a "how did this get made?" movie i generally think of something that is more infamous. a movie that NOBODY liked. or maybe a polarizing movie where the critics loved it and fans hated it, or vice versa. having a goofy plot and crazy scenes is one thing, but this film lacks the notoriety of what i consider to be a movie truly deserving the question "how did this get made?"- 17 replies
