  1. interesting (but i supposed not surprising) to see other MST3k and "my year of flops" fans are also fans of HDTGM. i like how each has their own unique style. MST3k will openly mock a movie as it airs, "flops" will re-analyze a movie which did not meet expectations and reevaluate it, HDTGM is more of a post-film discussion of what just happened (i feel like it's the kind of discussions i had with my friends after we went to see a movie in the theaters).

what's also interesting is that MST3k also presents the movie. so you don't have a bad movie, and a companion MST3k. you would never watch "warrior of the lost world" and then watch the MST3k episode "warrior of the lost world" (one of my favorites). on the other hand, with HDTGM and "flops" the discussion serves as a companion piece.

actually, before i even knew HDTGM existed, a buddy of mine wanted to watch suckerpunch. i didn't think it would be good, so i decided to check out the reviews. that led to me reading the "flops" article about it. after that, i was sold. and it did not disappoint. and recently i've been watching bad movies that i've heard discussed on HDGTM (superman III, judge dredd, and uh, yeah, street fighter) so maybe i've got a bad movie problem...?

  2. i had listened to this episode (possibly twice) before i decided that i needed to watch this movie.

yowza. i must say, i really did enjoy it. i really recommend it and i can't stop talking to my friends about it. richard pryor skiing off a skyscraper!!! native wedding!!! brad!!!

i think you are overthinking the lake math, though. first, they probably wouldn't run to the lake, they would probably drive a truck to the lake that was connected by hose to the main truck, and then pump it between the trucks (i'm sure the hose wouldn't get snagged en route). so it would also flow faster than gravity i assume. still it is somewhat unrealistic, that's why the superman frozen lake layer trick is the ideal solution.

but i do want to talk about the stupid-smart chick, though. what was her deal? so she was secretly smart, but it never went anywhere. was she a spy? a usurper? WHY was she secretly smart? maybe it was just supposed to be a joke? i thought it was going to pay off in the plot but it never did.

man. again, i highly recommend watching this movie at least once. i had never seen it before and was joyfully surprised (even after having most of the plot and premise spoiled by the podcast!)

  3. Speaking of Mann, Juwanna Mann (and guy that was killed in an outhouse in Friday the 13th Part 5) himself, Miguel A. Nunez Jr., was in this thing! That's never good news for anyone!

yes!!!! i thought that guy looked familiar. "DJ" had some of the best lines in the movie...

i have a question --- do you think the hosts are familiar with street fighter II the video game? it's interesting to listen to them talk about certain movies where they are not familiar with the "source material" (case in point: super mario bros. where it seemed like none of them had really played a lot of that game). this movie has a LOT of nods to the characters of street fighter II or what was it, tournament edition? i played a lot of that game when i was in elementary school. but i totally recognized the giant bell from being in the background of M. bison's level. (which was NOT called... wait for it... BISONOPOLIS!)

my "what the FUCK!?!??!" moment: during the final storm on M. bison's compound, when jean claude van damme's pistol runs out of bullets, and this old man notices this and turns to flee, JCVD throws a knife and it sticks in the old man's back murdering him... the look of elation on JCVD's face??? he's so happy he just murdered this old man with a throwing knife in the back.

    (that, and BISONOPLIS)
