Actors who are underrepresented on the show
PhillipMedoc replied to Lando's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I don't know anything about the YMIW movie podcast; I can't seem to find it. Yeah, I like YMIW, but I only listen to it when the guest is someone I like (Kumail Nanjiani, Chelsea Peretti, Kristen Schaal (I could just listen to her speak for hours), etc) because Pete's personality is sometimes mildly grating. And I've heard enough about your ex-wife, Petey Pie, give it a rest. I have seen made ten minutes of Dane Cook on youtube by accident. I could just tell immediately that I wasn't going to like it, I don't like his style or delivery. I don't hate him or anything, I guess he seems like someone who appeals to the bro crowd. I think he has this image of being a douchy bro kinda guy who is shooting for the lowest common denominator. Whether that reputation is true or deserved, I don't know. -
We've had a few thunderstorms and some rain in the last week, Portland weather is trying to take back control. But there's always a last gasp; gonna have a nice weekend. Time to grill the last of the corn from our garden (home grown veggies are the best) and can the rest of the tomatoes. Also, over Labor Day weekend I had a bad idea and paid the price with a fractured wrist. On Saturday night, I had a few beers and decided to go rollerskating with my dog (what is more summah than that, I ask you). I fell down probably a dozen times at least.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
PhillipMedoc replied to Darian's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Bulk and Skull were on the Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show last year. They tell a ton of stories about working on the Power Rangers -- which they are apparently still acting in! They come off as very affable guys. Someone should do a Go Bayside style podcast with Power Rangers. The dialogue is super corny and the dramatic setups in the first part of the show are always really dumb. But I guess it would get redundant with the fights, although you could just say "and then they fought" and skip to the closing minutes where whatever situation that happened earlier is neatly wrapped up. -

Anyone listen to the You Made It Weird with Dane Cook as a guest? I'm kinda interested to know if there's more to him but I also don't really care for him; he's one of those comedians who isn't even on my radar at all. -
"Because You Watched..." Netflix suggestions that miss the mark
PhillipMedoc replied to PlanBFromOuterSpace's topic in How Did This Get Made?
"Walking: The Movie" Hmm, not on Netflix streaming; I remember hearing some other positive comments about it. I guess I'll legally purchase it and give it a whirl. Yeah, I think they should have dialed him back down from 11. But at least he's dead? Probably? -
Howard's belittling of Ram Hand was hilarious. "You're reminding me to not have kids." Wish there were some pics of those gifts. The Australian package sounded pretty amazing, not to mention postage from there to LA is not cheap. I wonder if Kulap listened to any of the WieWie solo Twooch episodes while she was gone. Him and Stard talking about Kulap's lips started to get a little... pulpy.

"Because You Watched..." Netflix suggestions that miss the mark
PhillipMedoc replied to PlanBFromOuterSpace's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Netflix has the absolute worst UI, it's such garbage that there are whole other websites and apps devoted to making it actually easy to find what you want to watch (thank you, instantwatcher). The categories Netflix has selected for me (I'm streaming on a WD TV Live) are so messed up at this point, like "Gritty Erotic Thrillers from the 1970s" and "Supernatural Crime Documentaries" and "Talking Animals" and a bunch of random kid shows. And why, every time I start the service, do I have to choose between "regular" Netflix and Kid's Netflix? Ugh. Still beats cable, though. Orange Is The New Black is on top of everyone's list, I think, probably because they're pushing it. Watch that shit, it's good stuff. Well written and acted, a lot of fun. I wish there were more smart mystery shows or movies like Sherlock and not junk like CSI. -
I said that on the first page of this thread. That line is so fucking bizarre, it's stuck in my head forever. I saw Repo Man on 35mm a few months ago, and I was struck by how truly strange the movie really is. When I was younger, I saw it more as a punk movie (which it is) but it is straight up 120% weird, so much that by the climax you're fully on board with it as a viable event. Alex Cox (the director) has been making some garbage for a while now (including a pretty shitastic Repo Man sequel called Repo Chick a few years ago) but his 1980s run was pretty amazing. I don't know why Repo Man or Sid & Nancy haven't received Criterion releases; maybe he's too crazy to work with now, I dunno. EDIT! I just looked up on Amazon, and Criterion did a Blu-ray earlier this year. Very interested in the commentary on that, think I'll pick that up soon.

Also, cocaine. I mean, his stand-up was brilliant but those early recorded shows, there's no way he is not high as a motherfucker. I have so much respect for what he did; he was so subversive. Lenny Bruce was on the same level but he had a white man multipass; what Richard Pryor was saying and doing, in those times, was very provocative and almost dangerous. I have this record in my stacks, and it sometimes still scares people. Instead of watching The Toy, you could watch Pryor in one of the coolest things that ever did happen, Wattstax. My favorite part of that movie is Rufus "Funky Chicken" Thomas; when he asks the crowd to come down closer, they begin to comply. Then he's informed offstage that security doesn't like that, and without skipping a beat, he says "Now, don't jump the fence / It just don't make no sense". </thread derailing>

I have never seen this entry in the franchise, but I am very compelled to watch it with French audio. That's hilarious.

This played in Portland last year as part of the Hollywood Theater's monthly B-Movie Bingo. Shadoe Stevens was in attendance! He was a very nice man and had a very good sense of humor about the film. It's actually a fun watch, bad though it may be, as Shadoe has a certain charisma that many leads in other terrible movies lack.

Haha, you can totally tell that they recorded the sponsor breaks after the show; they're definitely trying out their voice acting skills. Hilarious stuff. Has Grey DeLisle been on any other podcasts? She's a delight.

I have not seen Exit Wounds. But to be fair, that sounds similar to the basis of Aikido. I'm not a scientist, but from what I know of Aikido, it's less about "fighting" and focuses on redirecting your opponent's energy (kicks, punches, etc) so you expend less energy and don't hurt yourself blocking attacks. Like someone comes at you with a big fist, you move with that, take the momentum, grab their arm, throw them down. It's actually a very graceful martial art, and like Elitist Prick said upthread, Seagal really studied this stuff and made an honest effort to understand the culture BUT he's a narcissistic egomaniacal juicebox. I feel like On Deadly Ground is the best example of this dichotomous aspect of his personality.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
PhillipMedoc replied to BobbySchenkel's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
That wasn't an "episode" per se, but a recorded version of Pee Wee's stage show that eventually turned into the Saturday morning program. It was in LA at the Roxy for five months in 1981(!). They still air it on HBO once in a while, and you can buy it on DVD. It's much more aimed at an adult audience; some of the humor is a bit off-color. -

Cowboy Curtis was a regular on the show. So was SNL's Phil Hartman. A lot of creative talent behind Pee Wee's Playhouse, it was much better than any kid's show ever deserved. It still holds up, as a fun thing to watch on weekend mornings. If I had a kid I think it'd be a lot better than babysitting them with a Disney movie or whatever. -
"Itty Bitty Bang Bang" KuKu's introduction to Skokie Binyon Jr and Grey just ran with it, wonderful. This is the best BatWie I could do on my lunch break:

I don't find any of his shtick funny at all, especially when he spends an entire movie in that stupid high pitched voice. Then he did Punch Drunk Love, which was pretty universally praised, but he's not a great dramatic actor; it was more like watching a cat shit in a toilet instead of a litter box, kinda interesting but still just crap. So many other SNL alumni have made featherweight junk movies like Adam Sandler does, but they are funny, unlike his. Tommy Boy is better than any of Sandler's film; hell, even Chris Farley's motivational speaker sketch on SNL is funnier than anything Sandler has ever done. MacGruber is super dumb and crass but also very funny. The fact that Sandler is doing shit like Jack & Jill is just, I don't know, depressing in a way. He has a bunch of money and could do whatever he wants, but he's just on autopilot. -
In terms of political affiliation and music taste, it's a correlation/causation thing. If you took a survey of registered Republicans and Democrats, I'd be willing to bet more Republicans like country music. There's not necessarily any relationship there, it's just an interesting statistical coincidence. Republicans also tend to have poor senses of humor, but I'm not sure if that's caused by country music.

Hey man, all my cats are my favorite, you dig? We don't have to compare everything. I agree with you on a level though, in terms of entertainment value per onscreen minute. For me, Gymkata HDTGM was extremely satisfying because I'd seen it in high school, then later in college had a hell of a time (pre-widespread WWW) trying to remember what the name of the movie was; it's a classic for me personally, and I never would have expected them to do it. Miami Connection would be great though. I'm honestly surprised it's on Netflix, seeing as how it was pretty recently "discovered". There's been pretty bad copies floating around eMule and torrents for a few years, but it had nowhere near the notoriety or awareness that Gymkata had among b-movie fans. Fun movie! You should all check out The Last Dragon, the two feel similar in terms of the combination of 1980s culture, music, wacky hi-jinx, and kung fu.

Mojo Priest has a song called "Alligator Ass", and another called "Talk To My Ass". I gotta say, though, this song on youtube is, while not in my wheelhouse at all, is not objectively terrible. At least, not as godawful as were.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
PhillipMedoc replied to Darian's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Yes it does. I was around 16 or so when I watched this, half-ironically but mostly stoned, and Amy Jo was one of the reasons. I watched a random episode on Netflix over the weekend, and it struck me how her character was portrayed in such a lame "I'm just a girl!" kinda way. Like a monster will attack the city, she'll roll her eyes and be like "I was going to go shopping!" -
I am now remembering that I saw Leif Garrett open up for The Melvins back in maybe 1998 or 1999. That happened. He toured with them and mostly did terrible covers (Smells Like Teen Spirit, ugh).

Different strokes. I'm in the prime demographic and I loved it. It was winking and nudging, but in a playful way. I like to think that it's the best video game movie ever made. Plus it resulted in a really terrific game after the fact. And the Blu-ray looks amazing on a nice TV.

I'll admit I haven't seen Glimmer Man, so your opinion stands. But as far as hubris -- have you seen On Deadly Ground? That crazy "environmental" speech he gives? Seagal, directing Seagal? And it was nominated for a lot of awards, too: 1995 Razzie Awards Worst Picture nominee Worst Screenplay nominee Worst Actor nominee: Steven Seagal Worst Director: Steven Seagal Worst Actress nominee: Joan Chen But I'm not arguing against Glimmer Man. I'm stoked for a Seagal movie. And I guess it'll be fun because I have not watched it. Hey, everyone should check out Seagalogy, it's a pretty fun book that breaks down ALL of his movies in chronological order. The later chapters that cover his straight to video years aren't much fun, but the first 2/3rds are a blast.
