    Episode 97 — Rhinestone: LIVE!

It made me sad to discover that Dolly won a Razzie for Worst Original Song for writing "Drinkenstein." I just want to tell her it's not her fault. It did make me feel slightly better that her actual performance was about the only thing in the movie that wasn't nominated for another Razzie.

Zouks: I just realized something: Stallone wrote in both this movie and Staying Alive a female character telling the main guy he can't make it, and him having to triumph over that negative assessment of him in order to win. Matt: Also, the movie Over the Top is the same. [beat] Zouks: Oh, we're familiar with Over the Top.

    Episode 97 — Rhinestone: LIVE!

The best part of the episode was every single one of them going out of the way to giving Dolly credit for almost making it work just by herself. I always like when they give credit for the bright spots in what are otherwise abysmal films. And June is right, Dolly is a national treasure. Although Matt is wrong, Straight Talk isn't her best movie, 9 to 5 is. And as a gay man, I'm obligated to give a shout-out to Steel Magnolias even though that's more of an ensemble piece.

    Episode 96 — Monkey Shines

I go back to the comment about Hollywood animal wranglers that came up during Mortal Kombat. Paul brought up the snake trainer who worked on an episode of Human Giant which consisted of hitting the snake with a stick. When get you to more intelligent animals, like monkeys/apes, and dolphins and whales (the latter as heartbreakingly illustrated in Blackfish) for entertainment, I do find that So Upsetting. If a Capuchin monkey (or a seeing eye dog) is being trained in order to do a job, that's great. But Boo 1-6 were being treated only for our entertainment, that just seems wrong to me. I can acknowledge there are going to be differences of opinion, and I will also admit that June went a little over the top, but I really did think she had a point.

    Episode 96 — Monkey Shines

Would it be So Upsetting for me to admit that I kind of agreed with June? Not so much that it was harmful to only credit one monkey instead of six (and certainly not with her agreement that using animals for medical research is bad, provided it's done humanely), but I think she had a real point in saying that calling an animal an "actor" does anthropomorphize animals (especially higher order animals like monkey and apes) in a way that's harmful to their welfare? No less than Dame Jane Goodall made that exact same point on John Oliver this past weekend. I heard Goodall speak when I was in college, and she is as disgusted by the practice as June is, and she made a special point of mentioning that the orang-utan in Every Which Way But Loose's sequel Any Which Way You Can (not the same ape) DIED two weeks after they finished filming. TL;DR: June might have let her passion overcome her eloquence, but she wasn't completely wrong.

As an aside, do you think Zouks is going to have to take a few weeks off when Gilmore Girls hits Netflix in October?
  8. Oh, I wish there was video of the Second Opinions dance break.
  9. That Droopy Dog/Twilight clip was the best thing I've ever heard.
  10. I only wish that Zouks' Devil's Advocate "I'll show you the fastest way to get around town: the SUBWAY, my boy!" had been eligible. And Tom Lennon's double duty as Hulk Hogan and Kurt Fuller from No Holds Barred was an oversight, brother.
  11. My husband and I keep doing Zouks' Pacino "Oh, OH!" from the beginning of that clip at weird times to crack each other up.

    Flash Gordon (1980)

Dino de Laurentiis. That's really all you need to say.
  13. You know, I quite enjoyed the podcast, and while I have not seen the movie and perhaps this is my own fault, but even after hearing them describe the movie in detail for an hour, I still have no idea what the plot is, except for "fever dream unnecessarily prequel to Easy Rider."
  14. I'm really glad Paul mentioned that Ernest Goes to Camp had given him the feels as a child, because I can remember having the same reaction and was a bit embarrassed about that. I had no idea that Jim Varney had done so many Ernest movies. I thought there were maybe two or three. Nope, Wikipedia lists ten.
  15. But would Earwolf have a PA around to make a run for the border as soon as he demanded it?
  16. That is simultaneously as awesome and as horrifying as I expected.
  17. You know, I'm a gay man who's attracted to many unconventional looking men, but that just...no. I loved Paul's question to June "As someone who's approximately Hulk's age..." and her deeply offended "Excuse me!?!"
  18. Can I just say that I hope Paul and June post a picture of the Jason "Give Me Your Baby" onesie?
  19. I usually listen to podcasts on the subway, and so after just the first 30 minutes, I'm fairly certain all of New York must think I'm insane because I was laughing so hard. I don't know if anything since either "Over the Top" or "From Justin to Kelly" has hit me in quite the same spot. They think I'm crazy, but it was so worth it, brother.
