Episode 121 - Karaoke Night at A Small Logging Town Tavern (w/ Scott Aukerman, Jordan Black, Hal Lublin, Jean Villepique)
kyleidoscope replied to JulyDiaz's topic in SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins
I like that the "timeless classic" Go Around the Corner included a mention of the new Ken. It ended up being very prescient indeed! I also enjoyed when Paul turned into a little boy with marshmallows in his mouth during the ad. "Uh-oh!" -
Holy moly.

Episode 120 - A Murder Mystery Dinner Party (w/ Sean Clements, Hayes Davenport)
kyleidoscope replied to JulyDiaz's topic in SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins
Wow, Paul really shut down Engineer Brett RIGHT away. But what can you expect from someone whose heart goes out to people who continue to pretend not to understand what Black Lives Matter means??? -
I really enjoyed how much Chop Stickerman really enjoyed Salmon Teriyaki. Another great episode of my favorite DVR'd Radio Programme, "The Interesting People Show."

Episode 165 - Ninja Terminator: LIVE!

How do you think Ilana feels about women? I couldn't really tell. -
23 - The Joshua Tree Anniversary Tour
kyleidoscope replied to Kevin Bartelt's topic in U Talkin' Talking Heads 2 My Talking Head
I think I probably also said this on the last Joshua Tree episode, but for being such huge U2 nerds, the Scotts' complete disdain for "Exit" is really weird to me. I don't like about 50% of the U2 catalogue, but "Exit" is a great song! Anyway, I'll allow it because this podcast is an invaluable resource for U2 information, like the names of the band members, which the Scotts were able to break down in just over half an hour. Great ep! -
Papa John's Misty strikes again!

Episode 99.5 - Bonus: The Pilot Episode (w/ Rich Sommer, Matt Gourley, Mark McConville, Chris Tallman)
kyleidoscope replied to JulyDiaz's topic in SPONTANEANATION with Paul F. Tompkins
This is somehow the best one yet??? Spoiler for this episode: -
I love when there's this many people because everyone's trying to get their premises in at once. I don't think Victor and Tiny's story even made it to the half way point, but I'm sure they'll be back to explain what happened at Universal Studios. And at one point, John Lennon said, "I'm not sure if I should be paying attention to the conversation happening to the left of me or the one to the right of me." I also very much enjoyed Dr. Green and his run-down of island life: 1. Bananas 2. Jerk chicken 3. Sweet potato pie and 4. Monkeys stealing your stuff

I watched The Tenant on Paul F. (and Bruce Campbell)'s recommendation, and there were a couple fun, crazy scenes, but it was at least 45 minutes longer than it needed to be. I should have watched it Howard Kremer-style -- on Russian Streams at 1.5x speed.

Well, you'll have to blame Scotty for that one. Mantzoukas said "Hang on, man," but Scott was the one who misheard it as "Heynong Man." And the world was never the same. Anyway, I think most people like when Mantzoukas is on this show because he and Scott are clearly friends and it's fun to hear people fuck around with someone they're comfortable and have a history with.

Yeah, Howard and Natasha are always so funny together. And Natasha has the best laugh in the business.

Episode 418 - Paul Reiser and The Apple Tree
kyleidoscope replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Comedy Bang Bang
I like when the old guard stops by Comedy Bang Bang to play. Crossing my fingers for a Michael Keaton episode with John Lennon and Gino Lambardo in the near future. -
I'm love Scharpling but I find it comical he is gonna vote for any of those bums. Because it's a joke and I get jokes!

Haha, when Rory said Goldeneye was the first RPG, the first thing I thought was: "There are a thousand nerds flipping out right now." Maybe that guy who wrote in to explain math rock a couple years ago will help them out.

This was one of my favorite episodes. Horatio is a Who Charted all star and pretty much everything he said made me laugh out loud. Plus, Engineer Cody was being a fucking problem again. Great ep! I have a couple things to add: 1. I completely agree with Howard that Kanye has inexplicably made his best album the hardest to listen to. Having it streaming-exclusive is crazy already but exclusive only to Tidal is absolute madness. I'm sure plenty of people would pay for it if they had a chance but Kanye's sort of forced his fans to steal his own album, which is pretty bonkers. And it's a double shame because, as I've said, the record itself is fantastic. 2. Also! Spring Breakers is legitimately great, which I wasn't expecting when I watched it, but it's funny and fun and also, impossibly, really holds together as a narrative film. Franco's "Look at my shit" monologue remains one of my favorite movie speeches ever. He should have won an Oscar just for that speech alone. Highly recommended summah viewing.

You nerds are soooo sensitive. Gilbert was a fun addition and it was cool of Scott to have him. I'll have to check out his podcast, which I can only assume exclusively covers Very Special Episodes of '80s and '90s sitcoms.

... is a stabilized form of nitroglycerine while TNT is a chemical compound called trinitrotoluene and there is, in fact, little similarity between the two.

Great news! Love "Daffy" Mal Yinkleyankle!

Scott's completely unacknowledged string of "Gimme that pill"s was cracking me up. Also: Scott always seems so bummed about it, but I love the new plugs closing theme, even if the future tense doesn't really make sense. It's a good song! I'm sure renowned musical artist management representative Tiny would agree.

This is the most contentious Whooch I've ever heard! Stay positive, Brody! You got it! Yes!

This was a really fun episode. I will not be bitching, but I will say I enjoyed having the guest for all three charts and I really liked that Besser brought in his top five tracks of the year. I think that would work any time, also. People usually have a little docket of songs or albums that are getting a lot of play currently, and I'd love to hear what people I like are listening to, even (or maybe especially) if it's older stuff they're digging into. I also very much enjoyed Howard's top five and his solo Christmas solution. What was in those other fourteen packages?

I forgot about it, but yes, that was one of the funniest things that happened all year. I hope China will be a recurring character in 2016!

Cover songs tend to be awful and that is particularly true of the covers they talked about today which, as Kulap rightly pointed out, are just dummies trying to snag a record contract by taking advantage of people searching for popular songs. However! Covering songs as soon as they come out is not new to the Spotify era. In fact, covering contemporary songs was a very big part of the R&B and soul scene in the '60s, to give one example. It was common for every group to cover a popular song at the time, which is why there are so many versions of "Get it While You Can" or "Stand By Me" or any of those standard soul tracks. Aretha Franklin basically owes her career to coveringOtis Redding's "Respect," which she released only two years after Otis' own (vastly superior! not sorry!) version. It's also funny that Howard brought up the Rolling Stones, because they, of course, covered plenty of songs during their career (usually from their blues heroes) but their songs were often covered heavily by soul musicians as well. "Satisfaction," in particular, was a favorite pick. Both Otis and Aretha have versions of it, among many others, and Otis released his "Satisfaction" the same year the Stones did! It was a pretty common practice that mostly disappeared until streaming dredged it up again.
