Amazing Grace and Chuck (1987)
joel_rosenbaum replied to JeffreyCovey's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
I'm going to exhume this recommendation because, well, the trailer alone... -
Trainspotting is probably my favorite film adaptation from "transgressive fiction", which includes a lot of interesting work (good and bad) from a variety of directors. What strikes me is that Danny Boyle was able to extract a minor subplot from Welsh's meandering, non-linear source material and develop a coherent plot. And despite being set thirty years ago (ten years in the past from release), this film feels incredibly current, and I think it holds up much better than other films focused on drug abuse/addiction (e.g. Requiem for a Dream).

An exploitation-style adaptation of a 1960's antifascist novel. What could go wrong!

Episode 145 - Vampire Academy (w/ Michael Showalter, Aisling Bea)

Given the amount of iron they would be consuming in that all-blood, no fiber diet, they would have the worst constipation. -

I could listen to Paul mispronouncing adipose all day.

It's been real, folks.

About the Knockout Decision: The Ting vs ET vs Alien vs Blade Runner
joel_rosenbaum replied to JJ95's topic in The Canon
Seems like a pretty savvy way to get Bladerunner kicked out of the Canon. -
Perhaps someone with more time than I have could set up a thread with a list of suggested movies and their (updated) streaming status?

Streaming on Amazon and Netflix.

This is such a weird thread. I feel like it fucks with the vibe of this place.

Trump's closest literary analogue is Buzz Windrip from It Can't Happen Here. Notably, that novel has not been adapted to film, probably because it seemed too far-fetched (Lewis has plenty of film adaptations to his name: Elmer Gantry, Babbitt, Arrowsmith...)

This is your yearly reminder:

It's Culkin time, motherfuckers.

Repo Man is a touchstone for 80s cult cinema. It's the kind of film, like They Live, that would almost certainly be enshrined in the Canon.

My mom is not a huge movie fan, but we did watch the Wedding Singer together and she laughed her ass off.

I think this is a good choice, especially with Devin mentioning that he would like to put some more borderline movies up for Canon consideration. I definitely agree that it is Russell's best film.

Let's Stray Away from Geek/Genre/Gen-X Faire, Just for a Moment
joel_rosenbaum replied to Philly Cheesesteak's topic in Movie Suggestions
just a note, but many of those movies, if not all, are "high concept" of some sort. certainly in the time that they were made. -
It's a good doc, capturing a subject that is rarely visited (although HBO made a pretty good movie about the McMartin preschool trial). In some ways this movie is better than Jarecki's more famous Bob Durst documentary; perhaps mostly because he doesn't insert himself into this movie.

Given the stakes (small), my general feeling is that a movie, once inducted, remains. That said, I put forward re-Animator based only on the voting process itself.

I didn't realize that Star Wars torpedoes were called "proton torpedoes". Are they filled with acid?

Elmer Gantry vs A Face in the Crowd
joel_rosenbaum replied to DankestBiscuit's topic in Movie Suggestions
Sinclair Lewis is not my favorite author, but Elmer Gantry is one of my favorite characters. Haven't seen the movie, believe it or not. -
This could be a "whatever happened to?" discussion, because John McTiernan had a run of outstanding action movies before turning in a long series of dreck and disappearing off the face of the earth. I think the "hard choice" would be Predator versus Die Hard, but others could make a case for Red October.

Blue Velvet vs. Mulholland Drive
joel_rosenbaum replied to BenGuttridge's topic in Movie Suggestions
I liked Mulholland Drive, but am kind of stunned that critics seem to regard it as the best film of the (current) century. I'd like to hear an episode on it just to enlighten me on what I'm missing. -
Pretty in Pink already went up (episode 25); worth a listen.
