Might it be worth merging this thread with the existing TV movie thread (halfway down the page)?

Just discovered this today. What a bonkers fucking thing that was. Hopefully they do this movie just to get Blake's behind the scenes work on it.

I love Singles; it would be an indulgence pick for sure, because that is *definitely* not Canon worthy. Despite Eddie Vedder's performance.

What are the most Canon worthy films of this decade?
joel_rosenbaum replied to Llewellyn_Wells's topic in The Canon
I saw it many years after release and was thoroughly underwhelmed. I imagine that movies as specatcular as Cloud Atlas don't translate to the small screen as well. Speaking of which, I'm just glad that no one suggested Avatar. -
Tombstone.

Count me in as a no; Newlin covered my arguments pretty effectively earlier in this thread. But suffice to say that it hurts to see Keith David -- who was great in the Thing, for example -- acting so woodenly.

Do daikaju films count as a shared universe? Kevin Smith films?

You mean, like the interview with Marilyn Manson? Especially in light of what we know about Klebold and Harris today.

I always thought it was interesting that Todd Haynes seemed to think of Velvet Goldmine as paying homage to David Bowie, rather than tearing him down (my interpretation).

Devin mentioned the Dekalog in the podcast. I think that (or at least parts of it; A Short Film About Killing, certainly) is worthy of Canon consideration. Scenes from a Marriage, which was truncated into cinematic format for international release, is another candidate. You could also argue for a whole slew of HBO output from the last twenty years.

American Hustle and Harold & Maude

I really did *not* like American Hustle. Harold and Maude, though. Definitely a weird one (in a good way!). -

Can we talk some more about Orson Welles? Specifically late-career Welles? I'll just let Orson do the talking: -
The re-emergence of the hound is probably an important plot device in Cersei's arc. I will say that Game of Thrones has handled the subject of faith kind of clumsily (in contrast to say, Battlestar Galactica).

Is there a video game-based movie that *doesn't* belong on How Did This Get Made?
joel_rosenbaum posted a topic in How Did This Get Made?
Looking on the front page of the "Bad Movie Suggestions" forum, I see: Dungeons and Dragons (2000) Doom (2005) Wing Commander (1999) In succession. All of which are undoubtably worthy/terrible movies for discussion by HDTGM (one of which has already been discussed). Which brought me to thinking: are there any movies based on video games (loose interpretation to incorporate Dungeons and Dragons here, but stylistically it's more like a video game movie) that are not terrible? Related question: is Mortal Kombat the best video-game based movie of all time? -
I reckon this won't be especially popular given the antipathy for the John Landis movie that is already enshrined in the Canon (Animal House), and that two of Eddie Murphy's best movies were directed by John Landis. However, Murphy was a huge influence on comedy from the eighties onward, and opened the door for a generation of black comedians to enter the mainstream. Also, during his peak, he was fucking hilarious. As for the films, Murphy headlined four of the highest grossing comedies of all time, three of which are worthy of Canon consideration: Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America. On top of those three, 48 Hours is also a worthy contender (maybe the best?).

I still can't get over Harrison Ford's earring. -
Planet Money actually ran an entire epsiode regarding the genesis of the Boy Next Door. Key graf:

I mean, is it? I haven't seen this one, but Sean Connery as a talking dragon seems like a pretty good premise for a terrible movie.

Top Five movies that are bad and you should hate, but you actually love.

You and a lot of other people; Gattaca rated 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. I like it, too. It's one of the few movies with a central scientific theme that is even remotely plausible and/or internally consistent. Remember that this is an era of filmmaking in which Tom Sizemore couldn't even correctly recite the four nucleotides of DNA in Mission to Mars. Pretty much every other listed movie in this thread is a bad movie though. Here's my five, excluding those already mentioned and those covered by HDTGM (e.g. Bloodsport): 1) The Golden Child 2) Enemy Mine 3) Gung Ho 4) Twins 5) Fletch Lives Oh, hi. I'm a child of the 80s. -

In the case of Tron, the video game was based on the movie. The light cycles were awesome, though. -

I did not feel Boyhood at all. And I'm generally pretty receptive to Linklater's output, so it was pretty disappointing to me. Recognizing the limitations that Linklater was working with, there really wasn't a plot and not a whole lot to mark development in the movie, aside from the fact that the actors physically age throughout. It felt like the movie *relied* on that device, rather than developing something from it. Moreover, all of Amy's criticisms of Everybody Wants Some!!! resonated with me in Boyhood. There were only two characters of significance (Mason and Dad) and everyone else (i.e. female characters) was just window dressing. I found it especially surprising that Arquette won the supporting actress oscar for a role that was so woefully underdeveloped. -
