Do you think the kerning represents the Upside Down?

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

In the event that my lifeless body is ever found floating in a lake, I really hope the person who finds it can refrain from calling my bloated corpse a “son of a bitch.” Look, I’m sorry if I ruined your vacation, but of the two of us, I think I’m the one having the worse day.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

I know at the end of the movie she’s kind of flying by the seat of her pants, but I think a pretty major flaw in Erin’s plan at the end of the movie is that she wants her husband to sign over custody...at gunpoint. Considering how insidiously unsympathetic the law has been to her thus far, I have trouble believing that anyone is going to accept a legal document signed under duress. Even if a gun isn’t in play, if a person feels like they’ve been coerced into signing a something against their will, it’s going to void that contract. And you just know that her scumbag husband would jump at the chance to use that against her in court.

    Bonnie And Clyde

It came VERY close to being my number two, as well. I have to admit, as much as I admire 2001, I really do prefer a plot with a strong narrative. And in that respect, I enjoyed B&C more. I also preferred the range of emotion found in B&C to the cold stoicism and existentialist dread of 2001. However, in the end, I just couldn’t dismiss the ambition behind 2001. While both have been influential, I found 2001 to be the more groundbreaking of the two. As much as it can get up it’s own ass, I feel like 2001 really tried to bring legitimacy to a genre that was - more or less - frowned upon. For me, B&C just took their genre to the next level. If it hadn’t been B&C, some other movie would have come along and done the same thing. I don’t know that I can say the same for 2001.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

And that's perhaps my biggest problem with the movie. The movie wants you to believe it's being progressive by showing us that exotic dancers are real people with real problems and real emotions, but it never fully commits to it. It's like the movie is trying to make a case against the exploitation of women while simultaneously exploiting women. Demi is constantly shamed and ashamed of what she's doing as if it's "wrong." It's like what June says in the episode, when the credit rolls, you can just tell that Demi Moore's character is ready to put this whole episode of her life in the review mirror. She never comes to terms with it. She never says, "I did this, and you know what, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it."

Abso-freakin’-lutely! Or! Just make her an undercover FBI agent! A guy was murdered and the last place he was seen was at this strip club. Get rid of the husband and daughter stuff - which is all just false sentiment anyway - and just make it about government corruption.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

I mean, the movie is definitely terrible. My biggest thing was the movie couldn’t even make her an FBI agent. Not that there’s anything wrong with being an Administrative Assistant, but it’s such a deliberate decision on the writer’s part. She works in law enforcement, but not in a position where she could immediately parlay her experience into a better paying job elsewhere. At best, she could maybe get another job as an AA, but it won’t make her the money that she needs. The whole situation is just so calculated - which only makes you realize how every gross decision in the movie is just as calculated. It makes everything else in the movie that much worse. This isn’t a case of a movie being bad because it was done on the fly. No, these people *thought hard* about it and this is what they came up with.

She tells the judge that he’s “addicted to pills and a thief.” Considering his apparent ease of access to hospitals and that he becomes an informant for the vice squad, I’m guessing he was stealing medication and selling it.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

Fair or not (and the movie makes a point of saying it isn’t fair) according to Ryan Sz in the mini thread, it’s a real thing. I can imagine if you work for the FBI they don’t want you to be married to a criminal. I assume that’s why the writer put that in.. They wanted her to be more sympathetic, so they put her in a position where she’s being denied custody for something that’s specifically his fault. It just makes her situation more aggravating. The only way the writers could possibly pull this card is if her character worked in law enforcement. This is the only reason I can think of for the movie to even mention she worked for the FBI since it never really ever comes up again. I mean, you’re right. It’s fucked up. But it’s also the same point the movie was making.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

That’s true, unfortunately, the movie really isn’t specific either way. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I would have to assume that the custody hearing at the start of the film is part of their divorce proceedings. At best, I’d say maybe they were separated but not yet divorced.

    Episode 192 - Striptease: LIVE!

No, you were right. She was married to him when she got fired. They were in the process of a divorce, hence the custody hearing. I don’t know why she couldn’t get her job back after she got divorced, though. Maybe by the time it finalized the FBI had already backfilled her position?

    Bonnie And Clyde

“I believe I lost my shoes, Clyde. I think the dog got them” are some tragic last words. I’m not sure if they are historically accurate or not, but they seem to say so much. In Butch’s last moments, he’s remembering an absurd childhood problem, and how he reached out to his brother for help. It solidifies exactly how much Clyde has always meant to Butch, and in the end, just how badly Clyde has let him down.

    Bonnie And Clyde

While I get that this movie was “just about Bonnie & Clyde,” in the era of military drafts, I definitely understand why the thought of a young couple living outside the law and sticking it to the man might be appealing to the hippie counterculture. I liked how how the final shot through the car window created a separation between these old white dudes and these kids. In that instant, it makes you reflect upon who the real killers are. B&C only ever killed in self defense or accidentally. If people had just let them be, would they have ever killed at all?

    Bonnie And Clyde

This was my first time seeing Bonnie & Clyde, and I really liked it a lot. What I found interesting was how in kind of deconstructed the myth of the glamorous gangster/criminal. Starting in the mid-19th century, there was this tradition of painting criminals as these kind of folk heroes. People like Billy the Kid and Jesse James became famous less for their exploits and more for the fabulous - and often fabricated - stories written about them. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow represent the brutal and bloody end of this tradition. I enjoyed that the characters of Bonnie & Clyde are hyper aware of this tradition and are knowingly chasing it. At first, they get a kick out of the fantastic lies printed about them and do whatever they can to perpetuate it. It isn't until Butch is killed and that reality starts to crash in on them. One of my favorite scene is when they are at C.W.'s father's house and they are reading that they are being blamed for a bank robbery that occurred while they were convalescing. Instead laughing it off, for the first time in the movie, Clyde just loses it. He just starts yelling and says that when they're well they're going to rob that bank for real. You get this sense that he's rushing to try and keep up with the mythology, but it's already beyond his control. When they are finally gunned down it is quick and brutal. They only have enough to register what's about to happen. There isn't time for a romantic final stand. Ultimately, in hail of excessive gun fire, two unarmed kids are torn to pieces and left in ignominious heaps, effectively ending the myth of the glamorous outlaw once and for all.

Musical Mondays Week 42 Blues Brothers

Just to clarify, I don’t mean a poorly written joke. I mean like a racist or misogynistic joke. I’ve watched movies that I was enjoying that made a joke not to my taste and it turned me off on the whole thing. While I don’t feel like anything should be off limits, I believe there are certain subjects that you need to be very careful about. Also, regarding Wonder Woman, I hated all the Steve Trevor stuff. I hated that he essentially became the hero in *her* movie. We finally get a good superhero movie staring a female character and it somehow became about him. You would never see that shit in a superhero movie staring a male character. It would be like swapping Peggy and Cap at the end of the first Captain America. It also doesn’t help that we come to find out that she’s been moping about him for 100 years and basically turned her back on everything. It’s been awhile so I don’t remember the character’s name, but I really wanted the other woman in it to be more significant. Like, I hoped she would get inspired by WW to stand up for herself. There was a moment when Ares was trying to get the sword from her, and I really thought she was going to fight him, but no. Don’t get me wrong, the beginning of WW is amazing, but overall, I think she deserved better. I hope the sequel will fix my issues. Then again, fucking Steve Trevor will be back, so who knows?

Oh man... I was going to write a post about how fucked up it is Matt “Guitar” Murphy just sort of ditched Aretha (something they actually fix in BB 2000) when I found out that he just passed away. RIP
