Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

It’s kind of like when Harry gets called out by Snape for just taking notes. Like, wtf? He’s literally just copying down what you’re saying! I think this is a common experience in British schooling. At least, it sure seems to come up a lot when I read biographies of British people.

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

I assume it’s the idea of grinding out individualism and turning us all into the same formless mush...or something

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

    Ohhhhhhhh! Gotcha! I interpreted wrongly

That would be a shame, but let us know. I’ll take you off the rotation.

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

Honest question for the people who like Pink Floyd: why? Even if I don’t like a musician, I can usually “get” why people do (“I’m looking at you Rolling Stones.) I like a couple of Pink Floyd songs, but more often than not, I tend to skip through them. I would like to hear a fan explain their appeal. I’m open to liking them - as long as it’s not dependent on me getting high.

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

Someone might want to research this, but I think some early depictions of Thor’s hammer Mjölner were carved as swastikas. Maybe it’s a play on that..?

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

My thought at seeing young Bob Hoskins was, “So this is who Chris Claremont wanted to play Wolverine? I’m trying to see it...”

Musical Mondays Pink Floyd's The Wall

Thanks, Grud-bud! Still sick, but I wanted to ask: who would want to watch this movie high? Is it just the music? Because the images are straight up nightmare-fuel.
  9. Just FYI: I’ve had a stomach bug all day so I probably won’t remember to create a thread tomorrow. Feel free to create one whenever. See you in a day or do.

    Episode 180.5 - Minisode 180.5

To be fair, that’s the case in a lot of fiction. Luke Skywalker and Neo are both examples of the same concept.

    Episode 180.5 - Minisode 180.5

Oh, I get what you’re saying now. Um...I don’t know. Based on what I’ve seen of them before and after Twilight, I feel like they were directed to act like lifeless planks of wood and gave exactly that. They were the best planks of wood you’ve ever seen. I think if Lee were told “we want this to be mopey, understated, and whisper-y” and gave them full Lee, that would be more unprofessional. Now that I’ve written that out, Though, I think what we’re actually talking about isn’t so much “acting ability” as “screen presence.” One thing can be learned and the other is innate. Lee has screen presence out the wazoo.

No, it’s not. We seem to be saying the same thing.

    Episode 180.5 - Minisode 180.5

I was just having this discussion the other day. I don’t think the issue with RPats and KStew has ever been about their acting so much as Twilight itself. If you look at their acting outside of that franchise, it’s clear what they’re both capable of. I think any fault in their acting in the Twilight films is on the directors and should not be a statement on their abilities. They are only doing what they’re being told to do - and in that regard - they do an admirable job.
  14. I just want to throw this out to the group. Apparently, Steven Spielberg' s next film will be a remake of West Side Story. My question is: why? Nothing against Spielberg, but WSS is objectively one of the best movies of all time. It would be like looking at Citizen Kane and thinking, "I could do better." Thoughts?
  15. There was an old thread on this, but for various reasons, I'd rather just start a new thread. Basically, over the course of HDTGM's run, the hosts have mentioned movies that they felt they should cover in the future. I would like to hold them to that verbal contract. It's been awhile since I've done a complete listen through, so if anyone can remember any other instances, please feel free to add them. When and where possible, I will include the episode in which the movie was mentioned. 1) Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans 2) Passenger 57 (Minisode 127.5) 3) Showgirls 4) Jack and Jill 5) Ladyhawke 6) Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift 7) Bandits 8) Country Strong 9) Limitless 10) Curse of the Jade Scorpion (or other bad Woody Allen movie) 11) A "Menudo" movie 12) Jersey Girl (Ep 43 Wild, Wild West) 13) Expendables 2 14) X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Ep 46 Barb Wire) 15) Swordfish 16) Irreconcilable Differences (Ep 128 Streets of Fire) 17) 16 Blocks (Ep 32 88 Minutes) 18) "Later day Pacino" (Ep 32 88 Minutes) 19) Assassins (Ep 40 Judge Dredd, referred to as "the movie with Sylvester Stallone and Julianne Moore.") 20) Beastly 21) Predators 22) Soul Man 23) Elektra (Ep 46 Barb Wire) 24) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III 25_ Karate Kid III (Minisode 130.5) 26) Hercules w/ Lou Ferigno (Ep 178 Superman IV) 27) Queen of the Damned 28) Blended (I'm pretty sure it was Ep 83 Winter's Tale) Updates from previous list: During the Wild, Wild West Episode (Ep 40) they do briefly talk about doing Southland Tales, but Paul has since said that they will never do it. The previous list included: Vampire's Kiss, Teen Witch, and Running Man.

HDTGM Movies Yet To Come (Possibly)

This is absolutely correct. Honestly, I think we can sue if they don’t do them.
  18. Just a head’s up, that link I sent you all has a bunch of silent moments (I think part 3 is completely silent). I found an eleven part link that seems to be better. I’ll PM all of you.
  19. I love LEGO Batman, but I don’t think it deserves to win an Oscar or anything. That being said, I do think it deserves to be nominated over Boss Baby - which I could have sworn was nearly universally reviled. Hell, I’m sure Cars 3 (which I haven’t seen yet) probably deserves the nod over BB. I really don’t get it. And, to be clear, I didn’t exactly hate Boss Baby. I think it’s just fine for what it is. But to see it nominated for an Academy Award is bonkers. I guess they just picked movies at random so Coco wouldn’t be up there by itself. Maybe they were trying to pick animated movies that weren’t part of a franchise..? But that still doesn’t excuse snubbing Captain Underpants.
  20. I’ve seen both, and I think Captain Underpants deserves a nod over Boss Baby. Boss Baby is... not good. I have not seen Ferdinand (love the book, though). My son’s class saw it on a Field Trip. He didn’t seem too impressed.
  21. I had to create two groups, but I think I got everyone who might be interested. If I missed someone, please let me know!
  22. I both want that and don’t want that to happen. (Btw - Monster Trucks is on Hulu.)
