Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

Tom - I just read your Letterboxd review. Okay, okay - that bugged me, too. Do you think they really spelled "coconuts" that way or do they mean a "cocoa nut?" I couldn't see the actual merchandise. I also thought the price of Orange Juice was a bit steep.

Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

Off topic, I just watched North by Northwest today. Now that ending felt premature. But considering how badly Hitch seemed to want to get to that visual of a train entering a tunnel, I'm not entirely convinced it was unintentional.

I wanted to fast forward so many times. I didn't, but by God was I close.

Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

I dont know...these guys are supposed to "made" men, right? And I'm not sure that either of them is supposed to be charming. I just don't see Big Jule being intimidated by GK. For the "love story" parts, sure, GK could have helped scrub out some of the scuminess, but for the mobster parts, I just don't see it. Maybe that's what I'm trying to say. It's not that they're "dangerous" it's that they're scumbags, and I simply can't imagine either GK or Lemmon in those parts.

I love GK, too. And if it were just a question of singing and dancing, I'd agree. My problem is GK just doesn't feel dangerous enough.

You know who might have been good as Nathan? Bing Crosby. He was charismatic and street smart, but was still able to pull off "down on his luck."

Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

I do not really like either Gene Kelley or Jack Lemmon simply because I do not think they project the kind of street savvy, wiseguy attitude you'd need to pull off the part. I agree about Sinatra, though. Half the time he looked and acted like a kid whose mother just called him in for dinner. It was a bit too hang dog. I know I am the one who suggested it, but I am really loving the Ameche choice for the reasons Cam described. I think that character needs to come off charming and likable and I do not think that Sinatra really pulls that off. He is the Chairman of the Board for Christ's sake! Sinatra's natural assertiveness cannot help coming thorough in his performance. He just did not feel like the type of guy to be played for a sap. Kind of like how people say that Trump is a "weak man's idea of a strong man," I feel like Nathan was Sinatra doing a bully's impression of what a loser looks like. "This is what you sound like, nerd! Wah-wah-wah!"

I agree, grudlian. I think Nathan needs to be the older, more world weary one and Sky needs to be younger and sexier. If Sinatra were cast as Sky, I am not sure who would have made a good Nathan. Maybe Don Ameche, Dean Martin, or Tony Curtis?

Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls

He was fine. I do not expect my protagonists to be paragons of virtue, but I did not exactly find them particularly interesting either. The whole Brannigan/craps plot just reminded me of Middle Scool when kids used to sneak around the halls to play Quarters. I honestly could (equally) not care less if they they were going to get their stupid game off the ground or save their souls. I did not want to hang out with any of these turds. And, since I know a lot of you have a personal connection with it, before everyone jumps down my throat, I thought GaD was just fine. It was well-acted and charming in its way, I just did not love it. That is all.

Oh! And from this point forward, I will no longer be using contractions to express my thoughts

They could always write that in. Just because it didn't happen that way in the original, doesn't mean it has to stay that way in the film. All's fair in love and adaptations.

And it's like the song of the movie. It's basically the movie's thesis statement, but let's not give it to the professional singer. He can just sit in the corner like a goober. Also, I know there are a lot of fans here, but I really didn't like a single character in this movie. They were all kind of a bunch of losers. Like, my protagonists are a couple of petty criminals whose conflict is either "corrupt this woman" or "avoid marrying this woman" and I'm supposed to think, "Well, they get married in the end, so it's all cool."

I ended up going with New Order this time, but I respect your crush on Andy McCluskey. I myself have very strong feelings about Morten Harket and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy

Which Movies Does HDTGM Absolutely Need To Review?

I just want them to keep doing their thing. So as much as I really don't like the Ninja Terminator stuff, I'm just glad their still going strong. Also, I'm glad your life has at least settled the point you have the time to chill with us again.

Which Movies Does HDTGM Absolutely Need To Review?

He straight up said in a mini ep (not long ago, but I don't remember which one) that they're working actors and there are too many people involved in the movie that they don't want to piss off. He said if you want to hear someone talk about it, you could try a different bad movie podcast, but they wouldn't be doing it on HDTGM. He was really cool about it. It sucks, but I respect their decision and his forthrightness.

    Episode 171.5 - Minisode 171.5

Nah! I'm too impulsive for that. I like them all, I'm just trying to set a certain mood for a project I'm working on. All of them work. However, I find when I buy too much new music at once, I don't take the time to really appreciate it as much as I should I should say, I've already bought Siouxie. :)/> So it's one for OMD and one for New Order. I was writing something the other day and New Order's "Ceremony" came on right as I was wrapping it up. It set the mood really well.

    Episode 171.5 - Minisode 171.5

Lol - No real reason. I'm putting together a playlist and I was thinking of buying some music to add to it. I have a tendency to go overboard if I don't set spending limits for myself, so I was just trying to narrow it down to a couple albums. Since I can't decide, I wondered if anyone had any preferences.

    Episode 171.5 - Minisode 171.5

Hey, music nerds, I'm trying to make a decision. Siouxie and the Banshees, New Order, Bauhaus, or Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark?
