Musical Mondays Week 15 The Fantasticks (1995)

I know most of you were fans of the movie, but did anyone else get weepy during "Try to Remember?" Just me? Cool, cool.

Look, I need you to be a CanadiCAN, not a CanadiCAN'T. Is there any overlap? Does Hulu or Amazon Prime have a similar service?

Because he liked it or because he hated it? (Also, how difficult would it be to set up a HDTGM movie club. We pick a movie and time and live post as we watch it?)

I think your second point is more along the line I was trying to get at. You're hungry and you finally get to eat some fruit, but it's already gone bad. From a story perspective, it's just a petty and dumb thing to fight about and highlights just how shallow their "love" actually is.

I would view more as a metaphor for getting old. Luisa first says that once their courting period is over and she is complaining about being like everyone else and just wasting away on a porch swing. Basically she's saying, "We're acting like old people!"

Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. I think he was trying to break into acting (because, as you said, NKOTB was more or less kaput at that point) and he could sing and dance. You've got to get your break somewhere and maybe he was the best they could get.

I didn't have a problem with that so much as I think it's suggesting that just being a teenager is a form of insanity. Also, the more I hear about the things that were left out of the movie I'm not totally sure that they were actually needed. I feel like I got it, you know? I'm sure it's wonderful onstage, but I'm not sure that I need an elaborate wall metaphor to hammer a point home. However, I will say (and may have already done so) that I feel like the story gets lost in the scenery. Knowing very little about it going in, I felt like it would work better in a minimalist production. It was like watching a movie adaptation of Our Town filmed in an actual town.

    Episode 165.5 - Minisode 165.5

I like the idea of a new game. Trivia's cool, but I'm also a huge nerd You know, maybe you could dust off some old bits. A few weeks ago I was listening to some of the earlier episodes where you'd have listeners write in alternate titles and tag lines and whatnot. Now, they weren't always good, but something like that might be fun. Or maybe bring back June's Life Lessons bit, but instead of her coming up with lessons the fans can. I've always liked the idea of something positive coming from something terrible.

My deepest sympathies to poor Dana for having to descend into that twisted Lovecraftian cesspit every fortnight.

I wasn't able to read that earlier because I was on my phone. I kind of agree with you. I mean, maybe it works on stage, but it feels a little to Saved by the Bell-y for me.

Fret not! I Goggled "100 Funny Questions." Surely one of the chuckle-busting, rib ticklers below should suffice. 1. If you could buy any type of food what would you buy? 2. What color is your tooth brush? 3. If you could be any animal what would it be and why? 4. What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket” list? 5. Who is your favorite super hero and why? 6. Describe your first masturbation experience. 7. What is your favorite summer activity? 8. If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you? 9. If you could be any flavor of ice cream what ice cream flavor would you be and why? 10. Who is your favorite cartoon character and why? 11. If you could go any where in the world where would you go and why? 12. What is your dream job? 13. Are you a morning or a night person? 14. What is your favorite hobby? 15. If I could jerk off to a celebrity it would be [blank] 16. What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? 17. What is your favorite thing about someone in your family? 18. What is one of your weird quirks? 19. When masturbating, what noises do you make? 20. If you could trade lives with anyone for a day who would it be and why?

Musical Mondays Week 15 The Fantasticks (1995)

I wouldn't say it didn't work, or at least, it worked for a Fantasticks novice like me. I particularly liked the line about "without a hurt the heart is hollow" which is basically the whole thing. Maybe it's just because I believe that sentiment to be true...I also enjoyed the wistfulness of saying, "It's nice to remember our innocence, but don't dwell on your brain's edited version of an idealzed past - especially not to the detriment of the present and future. It's also possible none of that's there and I'm just projecting again.

Musical Mondays Week 15 The Fantasticks (1995)

Yeah, I was pretty checked out for the first part so I probably missed that. I agree (and I meant to say) it's for us. Btw - I loved how it ended with Winter instead of Spring - fulfilling it's promise that there can't be new life without death first.

Musical Mondays Week 15 The Fantasticks (1995)

I don't think he's singing it to Luisa because, until she gains "life experience," she wouldn't be able to appreciate it. The weird thing is that in the cast recording this is the second song, but in the movie it's the closing number. So, it's entirely possible the director of the movie interpreted it different from the stage version.

Musical Mondays Week 15 The Fantasticks (1995)

I think I may be the mirror universe version of you I really didn't like the movie at first. I found it a little to cute and cloying. I see now that that was the whole point, but I was anything but charmed at first.
