Episode 242.5 - Prequel to Episode 243

So great that you’re back!!! Yay!!! -
The Wheelers are from the books. In fact, a lot of the stuff in Return to Oz is. It might be the other way around and The Wiz was borrowing from the books.
-
Agreed! Oz in the Wiz is more run down. It's bright, but there's a kind of dangerous edge to it. If I'm remembering correctly, more like Return to Oz. Also, Wiz Dorothy comes from, what appears to be a very loving and supportive family, whereas Wizard Dorothy is actively trying to escape her life and trying to protect her dog. However, that brings me to what I think is my biggest complaint about The Wiz as compared to Wizard. I don't like the the Evilean isn't introduced until the very last act. In Wizard, the Wicked Witch is a continuous, and personal, threat to Dorothy. The witch in Wiz feel more like a box to check than a legitimate or interesting threat.
-
I’ve seen the Live version, and I liked it. They wrote a new song for it that I quite liked. I’d link it, but you might just to watch it.
-
Something I really liked about The Wiz is at the end of the movie it’s Dorothy, and not the Wizard, who confirms that the things her companions sought they possessed all along. I think that’s more emotionally satisfying than the kind of gag/satirical ending in The Wizard of Oz (e.g. A diploma proves you have a brain whether that’s true or not)
-
Overall, I agree. I enjoyed the music and choreography. I found out that people felt Diana Ross was too old at 33 to play Dorothy, so that makes me feel a bit protective of her. I thought she did a great job.
-
I have always loved how Dorthy takes the witch’s shoes like she’s in RPG trying to gear up her character.

I’d go #1, as well. I only listened to the soundtrack first as I didn’t really have another option. -

I have not seen it live, but I loved the soundtrack. I think it would probably help to listen first since so much of the story is told through the lyrics, but I know a lot of people went into it cold and loved it as well. -

Trollhunters is fantastic! Make sure you watch 3 Below afterwards. It’s set in the same universe. There’s supposed to be a third part called Wizards coming out this summer. -

Jason Mantzoukas is 100% correct regarding Ahsoka -
I know that when I’m writing, and I’m “inspired” by someone or something, I’m usually referring to a specific aspect or trait, which I will then heighten for whatever fictional character I’m creating. For example, she might, say, be inspired by his stoic demeanor while slaying a bathroom spider and use that in a book she’s writing about a knight fighting a dragon. Using someone as inspiration isn’t the same as casting. And that’s why he might be surprised, too. He might not see himself in the sexy rogues she writes about, but because she loves him, she clearly does.

I’m fine with this. I bought it ages ago and haven’t watched it, so it will be nice to justify my purchase -
That’s why I said it was a mark against her. I’m just saying that it’s possible it may have been set up specifically to provide plausibility and to prime the audience to suspend their disbelief.

Yes, his accent is terrible, but I believe the movie does a pretty good job of accounting for it. Initially, they attempt other accents , but since he's so inept at mimicry she throws up her hands and decides on a New Zealand accent because it's an accent that "nobody knows." And in all honesty, I'm willing to bet a New Zealand accent would be difficult to pinpoint in 1990's Charleston, South Carolina. There wasn't really a Peter Jackson, Jemaine Clement, or Taika Waititi blowing up pop culture at the time, and the Internet was essentially non-existent. There really wouldn't be a convenient way for Gertz to verify if the accent he was doing was good or not if she'd never been exposed to it. And while I'm on the topic, I also wanted to add that a lot of the complaints people have had about Gertz's terrible reporting skills can also really be attributed to the lack of Internet. We're spoiled to have omniscient supercomputers in our pockets at all time, that we sometimes forget that in the old days, people actually had to dig for crap if they wanted to know something. Gertz only hangs out with Lobo a couple of times over the course of maybe a week, and he doesn't really do anything that would really prompt her to go looking into his story. Why spend hours at the library routing through microfiche to check up on the story of a person you already trust? The only real ding I have against her journalistic skills is her not recognizing Long next to the cut out of her at Loveboree, but maybe this was actually to set up that she isn't all that great remembering faces--which would actually help explain why she isn't immediately able to recognize "Lobo" as Gus.

Thanks @grudlian. I totally forgot it was Monday! -
While I recognize that in real life it would be extraordinarily problematic for someone to assume a false identity in order to court/seduce another person, it is a literary trope that has been around since at least Shakespeare. Off the top of my head, Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, Love’s Labours Lost, Taming of the Shrew, and The Tempest all have characters using some form of disguise or mistaken identity in order to romance another character. And while some of those disguises are superficial, in many cases, the use of such disguises is meant to reveal some deeper truth about the character. In that grand tradition, Don’t Tell Her It’s Me use of the “Lobo” disguise allows the reticent Gus to access the bravery and confidence that’s been lost to him due to his health and mental issues. Honestly, what I found far more problematic, especially given recent events within both the comedy and comic book community, was his sister’s proposition that he should use his fame to prey upon the fans of his work. When she first visits him on his palatial pier palace, she picks up a very kind get well card addressed to him from a fan. It’s just a sweet card wishing him well and a speedy recovery, with nary a hint of sexual or romantic interest composed within. Yet, after his sister reads it, she immediately suggests that “an enterprising single guy could find a date amidst all those thousands of adoring fans.” I’m sorry, but the idea of them scouring his fan letters in search of women suitably enamored with his silly, bubble-headed cartoons, is super gross. Don’t do that.
